Title: Notneutral Gino brewer and Lino cup review
Post by: Joe on February 28, 2018, 01:27:10 PM
Updated full Video review by Joe and Noah

the Mailman brought me some really cool stuff to tryout from Notneutral today. I am a fan of their mugs and they even sent me one, so I am super happy. But they also sent me some other products to review. I should have that up soon.

As a heads up to the upcoming video review, I have been using this brewer and cups for the past couple days.

The Gino Brewer and Caraf:
pros:
1. The blown glass is really neat visually and holds temps like crazy. This reminds me a lot of the bodum blown glass cups everyone loves.
2. The visual is really incredible and would put on a show for friends that rivals a vacuum brewer.
3. Shape and function is as good as the fellow pour over. Same filter size BTW.
4. The flow rate is nice and it fits the Lino Mugs perfectly.
5. If brewing directly into a Lino mug you will never have an issue.

Cons:
1. The problem is that these also have the same concerns of the bodum blown glass cups,  i.e. it's the glass slipper from cinderella, don't drop that thing. I usually don't save the original packaging but I did for both of these pieces of the brewer.
2. I have been noticing on the brewer is that if brewing the capacity of the matching brewer caraf 20oz the filter tends to really grasp the sides and slows down the brew significantly. you can lift the filter or create some air from the walls to get flow back. I might suggest to them a little more significant channels to prevent flow lock.

I also have a Lino mug in black and a cortado glass:
1. I haven't tried the cortado glass yet but I should be soon. It says it's for specialty espresso drinks.
2. The Lino Mug is my favorite mug, I didn't anticipate one being sent to me but it is the best mug IMO. I paid $12.50 /ea for my set and it's worth every penny to me. The cons on that would be that some people would be turned off of the price to even see why it's worth it. But once you get Lino espresso, cappuccino, latte  and coffee mugs, you will see what the big deal is. My advise is to grab a used one and then get a matching set.

Im just not a fan of paper filters.  It seems the same size as a regular filter, couldn't you put a SG or similar type removable filter in there instead of paper.  That would also solve a lot of the flow lock problem too I bet with the filter offstanding from the wall slightly.

I'll check but the filter size is pretty unique. The fellow Brewer had the same size.

Hahaha exactly. Noah's perspective is my favorite

It looks like a Kalita 185 filter.

It looks like a Kalita 185 filter.

The filters are taller than my Kalita wave filters. Are the 185 taller?

If so there isn't any reusable filter options i am aware of for either the Kalita wave, the Fellow Stagg x, and the NotNeutral. They all have the flat bottom design but the Notneutral and Fellow are taller...

Joe, I have seen reusable cone filters, I use one in my technivorn.  Not sure it'd fit but just throwing that out there.

Exactly the size is the key factor here. These are much smaller than a 10-cup what have you brewer.

Id have to look navy exchange may still have them,   I have one laying around somewhere but used it for chemicals in the past so can't use it for food stuffs anymore  but they make conical 4 cup mesh filters too.   Let me see if I can roust one up here.

If they had a flat bottom maybe 2" bottom circumference and a about 4" height that might work.

This is probably a stupid question to post, but I’m going to do it anyways.
I’ve been looking at this carafe for awhile and I decided I wanted to get it. I remember that I just saw your review so I came to reread it. I want the brewer bc really, besides an automatic brewer and espro press, I have the other main ones. Siphon, nel, all of them.

Should I get this one? The sticking of the filter sounds annoying in the long run and I appreciated the honesty in the review!!! I’ve hung on buying it because I don’t really need it, but I like the looks.

Silentdoom, it might be a while before Joe answers as I believe he is still overseas.  On the other hand, perhaps he is keeping tabs on us so we don't go completely off the reservation while he is away (I think that is JohnF's job however.)  ;D

I'm back. The Brewer is nice, it's glass but nice. I recommend it without reservation as long as you are aware that it is glass and can break. The sticking filter isn't too much of a problem, just something I noticed that could be an improvement.
