Title: now full - enflavor siphon (diguo F-1889) roadshow!
Post by: jano on September 20, 2013, 01:51:19 PM
Disclaimer: I haven't started a roadshow before, hope it's okay.

Some initial discussions here, complete with a video of the digitized, tea version in a foreign language:

This is an electric, 3-cup siphon (~360ml) from Diguo.  Release date is early November, I've been in contact with the importer/distributor.  Estimate total cost will be $160, however, I'm guessing if they extend wholesale for purposes of promotion we can get it for about $100.  Figure $10-16 Unit has been purchased for $65.05, so this will be $6.50 per person if we do 10 people, and there will be the lottery with a 1-9 chance of winning one.

Payment info: Please send $6.50 via paypal to my brother's paypal account:
martin.l.lukac@gmail.com
Long story short, paypal and I do not have a good history, I stay away where I can and boycot it.

If you don't want to do paypal, just PM me.

I asked B|Chance to help me do the drawing, he used random.org and the number was 6!  Congrats, Jimbo!

Here is a video of the one with knob like the picture on the Enflavor website. This video is very similar to the video posted in the other Enflavor thread, however, it shows her pouring the tea at the end. When looking at the picture, initially I thought the lower glass globe came out of the heating mantle. From this video you can see that it separates from the power source and electronics, but the heating mantle stays attached. I like the knob for heat control, and once you get used to where you need the knob to be for good extraction temperatures, it could be very consistent.

Jano, do you have any idea which model diguo F -1889 is getting imported? There are evidently an A,B,C  with "B" having the knob like in the above posted video.

Status update!

The website appears to have a "store", but it's working very very slow.  The phone number is disconnected.  I've contacted them by email.  If I get a response, I will purchase and then provide payment info here.

Update - email bounced back, recipient rejected.  This doesn't bode well.   ???

Worst case scenario, I will try to order it via asian websites, so we can at least try it out to play with :)

I noticed this siphon is being offered at MoreCoffee for $99 with free shipping.

Also Kevin Sinnot wrote an article about them and they were suppose to have a few at coffeecon.

Wow.. neat!  I'll get back on this, and PM all individuals to see if they are still interested in this roadshow.  Robert, if you wish to join, I'm sure we can make room for one more :)

Harold Kim was the guy I was talking to.  Interesting they are selling at $99 a pop... he was offering that to me for this roadshow last year, though plans to retail for $150-160.  I recall there were a of of delays in customs.

I had other interesting conversations with him, such as his suggestion to run one of his facvorite coffees through the siphon: kopi luwak... I've said too much, I'll say no more.  :-X

Packaging loses about 1/3 of its existing strength every time it is re-used.  Suggest grabbing some new packaging now and along the way.

Okay, this thing is pretty neat :)

The packaging is terribly cheap, but the product isn't too shabby.  The glass is thicker and so has some weight to it, compared to my kono 2 cup siphon.  I think in the glass world, thinner is harder to produce, and though delicate, considered more quality???

Lower "2" cup lines up with about 300g water, while "3" cup is about 430g.

It comes with a cotton filter, that is supported by a very thin metal plate. My glass rod (the smaller corning one offered on this forum by BoldJava) fits; I lost the little metal handle+beads so didn't use this.  Therefore,  I used the yama metal filter holder with a paper filter.

The top portion says "TCA-3" below Diguo logo.  Interesting.. Hario or Yama compatible maybe?

Instructions say to put the unit to 300-400 mark after filling 70-80% water, and when water reaches the top, put in coffee power, reduce to 200 mark, and let it sit for 45s.  Stir, turn off heat.  Marks on the unit are 0 and 500.  But the manual shows approximate area where these should be.

At the 300-400 imaginary mark took about 5 minutes for water to reach fast, consistent, small bubble phase.

That's about it.  Made a cup of coffee, works well, nice equipment!  :D

Dave's Yemen Red Haraazi I roasted Monday brewed in the Enflavor (bought separately not part of the road show)....simply heaven.  I was amazed that the Enflavor survived the trip to my house.  The packaging was a mess.  But it has a decent build quality for the price, is compact and simple to use and yields a very good cup.

I didn't take any overly fancy pictures, just one with my paper filter getting ready to boil earlier this week.

The unit makes too much for just me, but I think it'd be perfect for a few of you at the office, especially at the price point.  Drawback, as with all siphons, is cleanup; faster to drop a pourover filter into the trash, than take this to the sink, discard, rinse out, dry, etc.

One last caveat, when pushing the top portion in, careful: the glass tube section can grind up against the metal beads.

The white stand comes with the kono syphon (that's what you see in the background).

The diguo does have a stand, it doubles as the "cover" for the top portion if you use it that way.  It's shorter than he white one.

If you're serious about it, you could custom make a travel case with foam inserts.  See Todd Carmichael's Dragon Brewer:

I bought this and am going to try and make a travel case:

Chris:

I didn't use the filter (in case you didn't notice), and instead, used my yama metal filter.  I can "donate" it to the cause, and send it your way with some paper filters (or to the next contestant), so others can use it; alternatively, they can use their own filters; my glass corning rod from B|Java did fit (I have the shorter one).

The only caveat: the metal ball thingies are kind of big, and grate against the surface (and get jammed between the bottom of the glass siphon and hotplate), so you have to be gentle pushing down.

It's funny.....since I signed up for this, I've purchased a VacPot.  A Cona.  It's truly a thing of beauty, producing a very clean, "showy" cup.  All about the presentation.

I have found this little guy to be the opposite:  very easy and functional.  I've used it a few times, and am have been pleased with the cup it makes.  Washing it is a little tricky, but, I've managed to keep it in the appropriate # of pieces.

So it's going off to Jason (headchange4u) beginning of the week.

Jano,

JW sent me a PM on Nov. 4th asking for my home address. I did forward to him my address. He mentioned in his PM that he was working 80 a week and would ship ASAP! My guess he's just overwhelmed at work! I'll let everyone know when I get it!

I shipped the enflavor on to Jim a few days ago. He should be getting it soon ( hopefully today).

I only had the chance to try it out twice. I used the metal filter I use with my Yama. Overall, I thought the build quality was good. The coffee turned out great  once I became used to the controls. Like most vac pots, it is capable of having the water rise to the top globe 40 degrees before you want the coffee put in. I messed up a few brews, as you have to keep applying a generous amount of heat to keep the water in the top globe once the coffee is added. It was very easy to have it draw down early. It is quite capable of making a great cup, once one becomes accustomed to the controls as they relate to the upper globe water temp. I highly recommend using a probe thermometer for the first couple of tries.
Thanks Jano for putting this together and I apologize for the delays in getting it sent out.

Hey Jim:

I don't think Richdel is going to respond?  I hope everything is okay with him.  He has been unresponsive to my PMs for some time, and seems like he hasn't gotten back to you yet, either.   Clicking his handle shows that he did log in yesterday, so, maybe he just doesn't see the PMs, or has decided he's no longer interested in participating.

For now, let's just go down the list to the next person, woodstock, to keep it moving! :)

PS: Richdel: if you come across this later before we're done with the show, and are still interested, please send me a pm and we're all open to getting you back into the roadshow to play :)

After a week of enjoying the siphon it is on its way to fffolks.

I found it easy to use and liked it.  Lack of markings really didn't hinder my success (not like my stovetop siphon. ) Seems ideal for one person who want to enjoy a cup of coffee, although I am almost always making coffee for two or more and the size cups implied by the markings are too small.

I have had a chance to use this a few times and have not had any trouble getting a good cup of coffee. Like others, my complaint is the small size. The return is just too small for the effort. I am ready to send this on. Has anyone heard from richdel or will it go home to jimbo?

The US distributor must've gone under.

I think the parent overseas is still doing okay?  No idea.  If someone wanted one, I'm sure it could be ordered online :)  I've bought several items direct from Japan and Taiwan over the last few years so far without issue.  Sometimes a little more expensive because of shipping, and exchanges/warranty should be considered non-existent, but that's okay on items one cannot find here.
