With the first group buy in and the second group forming up I figured it was time for this thread.
I'd really like to see a few of you that have been roasting on the Huky for a while share any learning curve time saving tips if you have some. ..
But my first question is on Artisan. Do you use it? What do I need to set it up? How are you liking /not liking it, and any general info on it. I've never used any data logging so far but now might be the time.
-
Also, this looks like the best video to give a brief overview of the Huky.
Around 7min he talks about controlling airflow. I'd also be very interested in what you are found for this if you are already on team Huky.

Artisan...definitely use it...It's a phenomenal tool for the roaster...I am lost when I try to roast without it...Artisan provides you with a whole lot of data that helps you adjust and tweak your roasts mid-roast....it also helps you with consistency roast to roast and provides visuals to show you what's going on inside the roaster.
Summary: USE ARTISAN ;D
-
So what all will I need to run Artisan?
Just a laptop?
-
You will need a device that joins artisan to your thermocouples... I use the amprobe... Others use phidget
-
Amprobe what, multimeter?
I've got a fairly extensive Fieldpiece meter that might work.
-
Amprobe TMD-56 Multi-Logging Digital Thermometer, 0.05% Basic Accuracy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005GFHZLG/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_lPJPub0QTYF4V (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005GFHZLG/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_lPJPub0QTYF4V)
It has to be compatible with Artisan
-
Thanks!
I'll research Amprobe vs Phidget and get Artisan running asap. But I don't mind doing some non logging roasts at all. I probably prefer it to get into what the roaster is about once it gets here.
-
That'll work.. Once you go TC's, you'll never go back!!
Any more questions and I'll be glad to help
-
Will the "center 304 four input thermometer" communicate with Artisan?
It looks like I ordered one of those.
-
Pretty sure it's compatible.. You should be good to go
-
I found this very detailed list of Artisan supported devices.

You can also use a Honeywell 2020 or fluke 744 series to do about the same thing.
If you really want to get insane, get a slc 500 or siemens, learn ladder logic and use the PLC to control everything for you.

The center 304 an measure 4 data points at once. I think the Huky will have 3 probes. Running 3 Temps into Artisan software is way way more data than I'm used to already. I think trying to automate like you are talking would probably fry my brain.
-
FWIW, I very happily use the Roastmaster Aoo with Bluetherm Duo and my ipad. I was motivated to go with this combination because I already had an ipad and did not have a laptop. With this combination you are limited to 2 inputs, but I find that completely adequate. With the perforated drum, I monitor the ET and the BT with probes installed by Mr. Li.
-
I don't see an Android version of Roastmaster or I'd look at it. I really like my tablet and would love to use it vs laptop.
-
I agree with Aaron a little slc 500 with a analog module is the way to go, ladder logic is easy to program , the down side is Allan Bradly software is expensive, if I could get my meat hooks on programing software cheap, i would go that way.

There isn't one. But I like the Roastmaster app so much more than Artisan for data logging and maintaining my green coffee inventory that I bought a used Ipad to use with Roastmaster. I'm fine with only two inputs as well so I'll be using a Bluetherm Duo and Roastmaster when I set up data logging with my Huky.

What about it that makes you prefer it so much over Artisan?
-
Yes...please elaborate.
I'm going to build a dedicated roast station and I'm not against getting an iPad for it if it's better. Unfortunately I did just buy a center 304 that might not jive but I am ready to build out this roaster more "polished" than normal for me.

Honesly, in the Roast N Learn threads over at HB and other times that the Roastmaster graphs are posted, I normally skip right over them.
I find that the Artisan graphs give much more information (this may not be true..just my experience)
For example, these two roasts are of the same bean.
The Artisan graphs gives a breakdown of each roasting phase with percentage, etc...Also have Rao's RoR development ratio calculating on the fly for you. Also, you are getting estimate times for when drying ends and when first crack starts, etc...this allows you to adjust gas/air to hit your targets.
The RM program may do the same exact things, but I can't attest to that.

I can't claim any great expertise in either Artisan or Roastmaster. I have set up both (Artisan on a laptop and Roastmaster on an Ipad) but have only performed half a dozen or so roasts using Artisan and no roasts yet using Roastmaster. I have been using Roastmaster to keep track of my inventory for several months.
I like Roastmaster over Artisan because it was so much easier to set up and has features I like such as the integration with inventory (Roastmaster will automatically subtract the coffee I roast from my coffee inventory). I also like the manner in which the Roastmaster app stores and allows you to compare past roasts contemporaneously with your current roast (the Roastmaster literature indicates that you can superimpose the roasting graphs and also describes a simplified tool that helps you repeat the main parameters of a particular roast).
I think you can't go wrong with whatever app you choose. For someone like me, a person who will rarely use a data logging program when roasting, Roastmaster appears to offers the simplicity I need on the few occasions when I would use a data logging program. However, just based on the comments on the various coffee forums, it appears that many people use and are familiar the Artisan program. So selecting the Artisan program may allow you to more easily share and compare roasting profiles.
-
I don't need any inventory tracking features.
I like the idea of overlapping graphs to duplicate roasts but at this point data logging is only imaginary to me. Any feature is just an idea to me right now.
-
Artisan does that really well.. You can fully customize the background graph as well. They line up perfect with charge.
-
Like tracing a line. ... flippin sweet! 8)
-
I like the fact that Artisan allow you *unlimited sampling point, & PID Control is very important to me
