I'm starting this thread to track the 1971 butterfly black handle TTO (Twist To Open) Gillette Super Speed that Warrior started in motion amongst the wet shavers here. This razor is described as mild and a good pick for someone just starting out in DE (double-edged razor) shaving.
Sign up if you want to get in on this and feel free to post comments, pictures here.
Traveling with the razor will be sample blades and other shave software starting with Bold|Java for you to try and pass along. Feel free to add a few unused blades if the mood strikes. This is turning into a real traveling shave den.
Pyment is adding some straight razors to the den to up the stakes!

I never really tried one of these blades. Ive seen my dad with them and my grandfather. I honestly just splash some hot water on my face and drag the blade across it. I use the disposables.

I can't say that I hate shaving, nor can I really say I look forward to it either. It's not really tedious or difficult I don't think... It's like brushing your teeth, it's... just there, and something you have to do .... well unless you live in Texas then you just take your tooth out and put it in a glass by the bed with a little clorox and you are good for another week or three.

Yes, I used a piece of paper, drew the simple Christian symbol for fish, and wrote "Carp" inside the fish. Slid it in, above the remaining blades.

This morning I used the Geo. F Trumper Rose shaving cream from the traveling shave den with the traveling black super speed...The rose shave cream was quite fragrant, and whipped up a nice, but slightly pink tinged foam. I was a bit worried, but the rose smell mellowed out when I applied it to my face. . .
See how I figured it, there is too much testosterone flying around in this particular thread. I thought I would introduce a bit of rose to temper the virility. It is a soft rose and won't get you thrown out of Gold's Gym. Trust me.

I had the same experience. I think the Lord Platinum Class blades are quite different than the Sharks.

I learned I don't like sharks, or sharks disguised as clocks. I did like the Speik Cream. The razor was ok, but I like mine better. The Arko stick was ok, but I'm still not sure how to get easily get it off the stick in to my bowl.
I've added a few blades (that I like) to the kit.

Superspeed razor, 2 Arko Shave sticks, partial tube of Trumpers Rose Cream, couple of Art of Shaving samples, a "pumpkin soap" sample, over a dozen different packages of blades, little bottles of bay rum, grey flannel, and sandalwood...thats it. I'd take a picture but don't know how to post it.

I didn't send on the "sanitary napkins" that it came with when it came to me ("for the big weepers") as they wouldn't fit in the box. ;D

Since I am not in the market for a razor I didn't want to risk getting cut up with a tool that felt so radically different from the adjustables I know and love (me wimp)... ;D
The Lord gave an ok shave but is not as sharp as the Feathers, Kai, and Polsilvers I normally use.

If there were any yellows in there they were gone before they got to me. Try the PermaSharp's I threw in there. I've seen where some folks on BadgerAndBlade think they might be the same as the yellows.

There's still an Arko shave stick, at least 12 different packages of blades, Trumpers Rose cream in a tube, a razor I never tried, some smelly stuff, lotions and potions...basically there is everything a person could want to make the call to enter or not enter the rabbit hole... 8)

The den arrived this evening. I shaved the goatee and mustache I have been growing for the last 6 months. My girlfriend said I look like a fat old baby. I probably got a little carried away but already having a blast.

I'm not good enuf to use the SS again since the first week, I've since been using a Long Handle
Super Adjustable, then a Slim and now a Fat Boy. The SA handle is too long for me, but it's a toss
up between the Slim and FB.

Long handle didn't suit my hands either. I tend to "choke up" on the handles anyway - sold my SA. I know that Fat Boy gets all the hype but I'm leaning toward Slim as my go to razor. I like the lighter feel a bit more. Have used Slim with an Astra SP and Musgo Real Cream for my last 5 shaves. So far each shave has been close to outstanding. When this blade dulls, I will do the same test with Fat Boy to settle this once and for all - Hah!

My SA was stolen by Mrs MMW nearly as soon as I bought it...just as well, everything else would get dusty now that I have a slant ;D

I think I finally settled on using the featheras-d1 but I don't think I would give up my fat boy. Out of the Gillettes I have tried it seems the most balanced.
The slant I try to love but the blade alignment is a pain and I find that it shaves so close I have to worry about ingrowns :(

Just keep repeating this to yourself and all will be fine. "No pressure. No pressure." Use a light hand and let the weight of the razor do the work. Try starting out with a couple of with the grain passes (reapplying the lather between the passes) until you're feeling more confident.

I tried the razor on Saturday and went over the face twice, re-applying my shaving cream in-between. The shave did not come out nearly as good as with my Fusion, but I will try again. I used the Treet (I think that was the name) blade and managed to not cause any damage to my complexion. After only one shave I don't really see what the hype is all about, but I am not giving up yet.

Technique makes all the difference. Blade angle, direction to grain and razor to blade selections can make large differences.

The Wilkinson tore up my neck. Nothing too bad but definitely not good. Its probably my technique, but I still didn't get as good a shave as I am used to. I guess I am having trouble understanding the whole attraction to safety/straight razors. Is this like an old man's extreme sport where one wrong move and you get hurt? I'm not giving up on it, but I'm glad my Fusion is still locked and loaded so I can actually get a smooth result.

Could be that DE shaving is just not for you - like Aeropress is not for me for example. I feel like with my DE razors et al I get closer shaves without any irritation. I must confess I also like the idea of the prep with pre-shave oil, the lathering, the repeating. I actually find it relaxing. I am captured by the idea of reducing the beard a little with each pass rather than trying to scrape it all off in one swoop. I don't know about "old man" sport, but a slip with a very sharp instrument near your face/neck could be a problem regardless of your age.
If you got better or even as good shaves with your Fusion and this ain't fun then heck keep on with your Fusion.

I think it is a wash Dave, I get about 6 weeks off a single cartridge on my Fusion and I'm guessing those safety blades don't last long, or at least you don't want to find out the hard way it is time to replace.
Chris, it is indeed banned unless you are incapable of growing a manly grizzly beard like me. I could pull off a 'stache and soul patch, but that went out with the 90s. ;D

Third shave this morning with the safety, second shave on the Wilkenson blade - best result so far with the double edge. I lightened up the pressure and used shorter strokes. It left my face nice and smooth with two passes but my neck still is a bit rough. I probably didn't have the blade angle set correctly. I am still not completely sold on the setup, but I'm no longer completely opposed either.
One question- how often do you recommend switching blades? With my Fusion I just change when I start to feel a little skin irritation after the shave, I'm not sure I want to wait that long with a safety razor... ???

It might take a while too but it really starts to pay off when you get it right. The shaves will be closer and irritate less.

Yeah, its actually a bit frustrating as the outer/lower areas of my neck have a grain laying upwards and the middle/upper portion have the grain running down. It isn't that big of a deal with the Fusion, but with the safety razor I find that shaving with the grain first, then against it worked best. I am going to switch to a different blade for tomorrow and see if I can improve yet.

My neck is the same way. Just go with the grain, however that happens to be on your mug, for the first pass. Once you get that figured out, your shaves will be quicker and more comfortable :)

What blades are left in the den? I liked the Perma-Sharp blades a lot, BTW. A lot of folks like the Astra's, though not everybody.

That REALLY depends on who you ask. MP claims to get upwards of 60 shaves from one blade. For me 4 or 5 seems to be where the tugging starts. At a cost of about $0.10 per blade I'm willing to change them at the first sign of pull.
As far as shave direction is concerned, the "experts" seem to agree on a "Four Pass" method. One with the grain, two across the grain, then finish with the against the grain pass. Idea is that gradual reduction of the beard is the goal. A guy called Mantic59 has a series of videos on YouTube that many have found useful. I get 4-5 shaves out of a Wilkinson, Astra, or BIC. I bank it when a tug starts.

I am fine with two passes. Three might be a slight improvement but there are diminishing returns.

I tried out the BIC blade this morning and have improved further. I still get more irritation than the Fusion and have not got my skills set to get as good as a shave but am now convinced this is just due to technique. Blade angle around the contours seems to be my biggest challenge as I am struggling to get the jawline shaved closely, but there is no visible stubble so I can afford to be patient.
Now that I am starting to "get" the safety razor. Lets talk brushes and shaving soap. What, if any, difference am I going to notice between those and my can of Barbasol?

I was looking at Whipped Dog (http://whippeddog.com/products/view/silvertip-badger) yesterday and they have a decent price on brushes. Looks like they are out of stock on the silver tips, but the combo kit (http://whippeddog.com/products/view/brush-and-soap-set) might be a good starter brush

Someone over on Badger and Blade recently posted that Bath & Body Works is having their buy two get one free deal on C.O. Bigelow Shaving Cream. You can get three small tubes for $10 (the large size would be $20 for three). I would go with the smaller one in case you hate it. This is a cream that I think is top notch for the price. Particularly good for the summer since it has eucalyptyus and menthol in the formula. It's the Italian cream Proraso relabeled for the American market. BTW, if you buy it and hate it, I'l take it off your hands.
I have used one Geo. F. Trumper brush for about 20 years and have no idea what I paid for it. I would agree that an inexpensive brush is the place to start. You may want to read up on the differences between boar and badger. I love my badger. Never tried a boar.

I got a 22 mm silver tip recently before they went out of stock. Had it drilled another 10mm since I wanted a brush with good backbone. Had a fair amout of badger funk but that quickly subsided. Nice brush and fast shipping. Overall, I am pleased. It's obviously not a high end brush, but it will have a place in my rotation. I'm actually thinking about getting another to give to my son when they're back in stock.

so far I've tried 3 boars and 4 badgers of various grades and if I was to start all over again,
I'd be quite content with just 2 boar brushes. They are substantially cheaper yet no matter the price,
the boar tips are never scritchy no matter how strong the backbone. Unlike badgers,
scritchiness is inversely proportional to price.
I have the Semogue 620 and 1460 and I'd recommend the 620 or its equivalent 1520 or 1438.
The 1460 (or 610) have slightly less backbone but still much more than say a pure badger.
At $15 for the wood handle Semogue, I see why they are a favorite on B&B. The Omega boars
are even cheaper but the handle is usually light hollow plastic.
Here's a chart comparing the Semogue models:

I tried out the BIC blade this morning and have improved further. I still get more irritation than the Fusion ... but there is no visible stubble so I can afford to be patient.
Now that I am starting to "get" the safety razor. Lets talk brushes and shaving soap. What, if any, difference am I going to notice between those and my can of Barbasol?
I would encourage you to give the whole schtick about 90 days and then determine if the Froushin-Froushin gives you a better shave.
RE: Soap and brushes vs Barbasol. You may not get a better shave with soap and brush. Barbasol might work better for you. I have had about 20 soaps and creams. Soaps do not provide the abundant lather I am after. I tried about 3 of them and moved on. Creams are a totally different product. More lather and less drying to the skin.
My go-to product for creams are Old Spice (Indian product) and Taylor of Old Bond Street. They lather for me better than canned shaving cream. Most importantly, they don't dry my face and leave my skin softer than does a canned cream. I have had some creams disappoint me (Proraso for one) but the O/S and TOBS are tops.

You may have already been experimenting with this but if you have been paying attention to the grain then the other thing to focus on is the blade angle. Try going more perpendicular on the handle to avoid scraping the hair off your face. While this may make it so you can do less passes it irritates more.

I wanted to give up a month into it but then the routine and variables came together and I have had fewer issues than I had with any other shaving method.

I cheated today and just used the Fusion. Back to the safety razor tomorrow and I may even try that tube of girly cream that was in the box. Up until this point I have ignored anything in the box that couldn't potentially kill or cause great harm to myself. So some rose shaving cream and hippie aka sandalwood aftershave may get a tryout over the weekend.

If anybody else would like to try wet shaving I will gladly wrap up my trial and send it on, finding my own razor to do further testing with.

I just bought a used Gillette Super Speed off Ebay for $11 delivered. So if anybody would like to jump in I would be more than happy to pass this box along.
In the mean time I will start comparing the blades. My last blade I tried was a Big Ben (blue packaging if that makes a difference). Overall I give it a B-, on the fourth shave today it started tugging on my neck whiskers where I am the most sensitive to irritation. It's highest rated shave was the second shave where it got a B+ only lacking in the closeness of the shave.
I will randomly select another blade to start reviewing tomorrow and continue forth until somebody else steps up for this fun little experiment.

I have taken a peak in the hole and I just ordered a cheap badger brush to go with my new to me Super Speed. I ordered the brush so that I could try the soap and cream in the box and order more if I like it. That said, my Fusion still gives me a closer shave with less irritation than any of the shaves I have had with the Super Speed. It is fun trying to nail down the technique though and if I get bored with it I can resell my razor for what I paid for it pretty quickly.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Sensei! I got my cheap-o Tweezerman badger brush and tried out the rose shaving creme and actually enjoyed this more than messing around with the safety razor. I don't think I lathered it up enough as the creme that I applied to my face dissipated as I shaved, but it felt really good applying it with the brush. Regardless of whether I decide to use a safety razor as part of my daily ritual I think I will be ditching the canned creme for good.

I tried out the soap this morning and I need to work on my technique a bit, but it did the job. I am going to try and find some soap/creme samplers to try out with my new-to-me red tip Super Speed. Although I was skeptical at first I am intrigued by wet shaving and will continue to hone my skills each morning. The Fusion has been put away and awaits emergency or travel usage only.
As far as I am concerned this traveling shave setup is ready to move on if anybody else is man enough to give it a try. I can't think of a better way (free) to dip your toe in the world of wet shaving. Thanks gentlemen!

The shaving den arrived in Lake Cheddar today. It is time for us to make a re-stock on it. Give me a week with it and I will add a few quality items. Right now, it is long on blades that are good for taking paint off the window panes. It also had some mystery coffee in it, which is timely -- I am finishing up nubs of COEs and Geshas. I am getting close to doing a den clean. It might be worth getting a boar brush for the den. I was very surprised how much the omega softened up in the past couple weeks.

I think a cheap brush would be a great idea and I was going to include my Tweezerman until the knot fell out of the handle and I was forced to return for refund. I included a tube of Bigelow cream because I found it very easy to lather and very cooling on the skin. Although the rabbit hole has definitely swallowed me, I have found that this hobby is very easy on the wallet (comparatively) if you want it to be.
Total damage:
3 vintage gilletes - $19 (SS red tip off ebay $12, SS black handle and Tech found at thrift store $7)
Semogue SOC Boar Brush - $30
Various creams and soaps - $30
For under $100 I now have transformed my mourning routine from chore to something I actually look forward to. I highly recommend anybody that is using an electric razor (former Norelco man myself in a previous life) or cartridge (my Gillette Fusion retains residency) give this a shot. Its virtually free to try out and can be quite rewarding.

Okay, reporting in with the first shave report.
Used the Derby cream, and an Astra blade. The face went well. Happy with the result. The head is going to take some time/practice. Did a three pass on my head, which is what I usually do with the Mach II. Wasn't quite as close, but I am sure it is in my technique, or lack of. One small nick on the back of the head that I didn't feel. Just a tiny trickle of blood.
One thing's for sure. At least for now I need to allow more time for the morning ritual.

At this point here's where I'm at with this:
I (half-heartedly) tried the de on my head and didn't really like the results, or the time it took. The lazy gene kicked in.
But, I have found that I really like the brush and cream. I have moved away from the stoopid-expensive MachIII (way overpriced) to a Trac II using a Wilkerson blade that Walmart sells for less that 3.50 for 10. I think the cut is at least equivalent to the Mach III.
I've been using the Bath & Body Works C.O. Bigelow. I have a boar's hair brush I use at home, and just bought a Parker Synthetic for the road, which I will use tomorrow for the first time.
So, even though I am not currently doing the de method, I may re-visit it later. I didn't mind it on the face, just couldn't really get the swing of it on the noggin.

Well the Gillette superspeed razor is all sterile and ready to try next week after I give the Lord I purchased a few tries.
May I ask what is in the white tub from the photo on the last page? I suspect it is the only shave soap left in the kit but it's unlabeled. I may have to send the kit along to the next victim with a new soap added - perhaps the sticks that were used previously.
I had a great shave this morning using the Proraso preshave which is potent stuff along with my TOBS Sandlewood cream. I used more cream on the brush to start and got a richer more abundant lather. Only two passes necessary and a few touchups for a very nice clean shave. Toughest spots are still near my lips both upper and lower and on the neck just below the jawline on the right side - I'm a lefty. Still a pretty good start. I finished with a try of the Baxter aftershave balm and a splash of witch hazel. The Baxter seems a lot like the Nivia balm I tried yesterday. All good products.
I am enjoying pampering myself in the morning and getting up a bit early to start the day.

Results so far
I like the Baxter after shave balm. It is very much like the Nivea Balm I bought on Dave's recommendation. I would likely purchase this in the future unless of course I find something that knocks my socks off.
I also like the Proraso pre shave. It is potent menthol and eucalyptus but it feels really nice on my skin and it dissipates once I put lather on my face. I will buy this product but also look for an alternative without all the menthol-eucalyptus to rotate.
I didn't care for the C. O. Bigelow shave cream I used this morning. It did not lather as well as my TOBS Sandalwood or the Headslick or give as consistent lubrication for the blade (3rd shave with the BIC from my sample pack). I still get a very nice close shave with no bloodletting. I think I will pop a new BIC into the Gillette superspeed Sunday when I get back from Vermont to get a direct comparison with the Lord razor.
I'm still having a bit of a problem with parts of the right side of my neck and jawline area where its awkward to get the razor at the right angle. Practice Practice Practice.

I’m really enjoying this package of DE shaving goodies so I thought I’d update my progress.
I’ve tried the Gillette black handle super speed razor a couple of times with a new BIC blade and compared with the Lord L6 I purchased and used with a different new BIC blade. I like the razor for a couple of reasons and not for others. I think the head shape allows easier access to tough to find places on my face compared with the L6 head. The SS is also better balanced so perhaps that is helping access getting to hard to shave areas. The SS is almost too smooth in that it’s tough for me to know sometimes if I am shaving or pushing lather off my face. I think there is a limited angle that cuts with this razor. I found this not to be the case with the L6 which my guess is a more aggressive razor. I like the L6 better in this regard but both gave nice close shaves. I think I will sanitize the Super Speed for the next user and play with the L6 and the new toys coming my way from my FIL. My MIL looked around and found at least a couple of his nice old DE’s and both are adjustable Gillette slims which I will be cleaning up and playing with settings and blades.
I’m vastly better at making lather now and I’ve tried the Geo Trumper Rose from the kit and loved it so much I purchased a tube today along with Proraso pre-shave cream. To round out my purchase and take advantage of a 10% Memorial week discount and free shipping I also ordered some Geo Trumper Sandalwood Soap that got good reviews and a Lime AS balm also from Trumper. I am definitely heading down the wormhole but it is not as costly as my former golf equipment fetish or espresso equipment craving. Is there a shaving “handicap†like golf where the “scratch†shaver can do better with cheap equipment then a hack (good pun) with the best tools? Is shaving well the barista/shaver or the equipment?
I also used the e-shave lime shave cream from the kit a couple of days ago (it’s just about gone) and it is also a really fine product I would recommend and purchase in the future. Today I put the used two times BIC into the nice cleaned up Gillette slim and used it –setting 4- with the Darby lemon cream. The cream is nice though not as rich as the TOBS,Trumper or eShave creams. It functions just as well IMO. The razor I will be staying with for a total evaluation. It has weight and balance I did not see in the other razors. Setting #4 is fine so far. I dialed down to #2 for XTG try and felt I was not shaving or getting the correct angle so I dialed it up again. No bloodletting, tenderness or rough feeling skin. I am not, however, a fan of the Aspect milk AS balm I used after a witch hazel splash. I found nothing wrong with the scent but it did not feel that great on my skin compared to the Nivea or Baxter products. I like the Slim razor a lot. I plan on testing out the remaining shave creams and some different blades using it –including the infamous SHARK blade. I’ll add some stuff to the kit and then I can pass it on to the next willing customer when one volunteers.

I thought I would bump this up to the top to see if we can find the next convert to win over to the pleasures of wet shaving. 8) This has been a great way to sample a whole variety of products to see just how much stuff is out there and what works and what is not up to your taste. I'm hooked and it is a better way to shave and a treat to pamper yourself in the morning or evening. If you're constantly in a rush rush rush then don't apply.
I have accumulated/purchased a good sampling of creams, hard milled and tallow based handmade soaps, brushes, razors and pre and aftershaves to the point where Sharon asked if “the box†will be leaving and don’t I have enough stuff for a LONG time already. She’s a dedicated jewelry designer so I asked her if she had enough beads, gemstones and gold and silver hardware and she got the idea.
So who out there wants to take the plunge? It’s a relatively cheap rabbit hole compared to most.

There are certainly times when anyone needs to move quicker and meet a deadline so being more efficient with the razor is a good thing but most times I'm finding that I actually want to take my time and relax with my shave. It sets a pace for the day.
With regard to coffee, I think we all make the time as a means to get the great beans we love and again because its an enjoyable activity (for us).
I connect rushing through anything with just wanting to get it over with and on to more important things.

There are a lot of nice goodies to get you started with wet DE shaving. I've accumulated a lot of my own stuff now and picked out some creams and soaps, razors, blades and brushes that suit me.
Give it a try. You only have a little blood to lose -depending on which blade you choose! ;D

After a quick look around, I have 4+ straights that used to be in my rotation. Candidates include names like Filarmonica, Geo Wolstenholm and Sons (there may be 2-3 of these), Bengall, J. Wiss & Sons, Joseph Allen & Sons ...
This is before I really look at them. I don't know if all would make the "cut". I was doing a fair amount of practicing restoring and honing for a while so I have more to check.
Unfortunately, I forgot to oil them prior to storing. There is some resultant oxidation that will need to be cleaned up before a touch up with the hones, stropping, oiling and shipping.
Usually there is a discussion about how to sanitize them before shipping. Feel free to discuss this. My plan is to do something before shipping, but my advice is for the shaver to re-sanitize the blade before using it.
Just, for my peace of mind, some common methods are risky.
Celluloid scales don't respond well to heat (melting) and some solvents will dissolve them.
Chlorine based agents (like bleach) are hard on carbon steel (these will all be high carbon steel).
Barbicide is the standard and available from Barber supply places, but is hard to find in my small town.
As often as sanitizing razors comes up in the forums, there doesn't appear to be an article on that in the SRP wiki. Those guys tend to talk something like this to death (there are forums like that y'know).
I did a quick search of SRP (what I do for you guys). Options include Barbicide, Clippercide, Marvcide, rubbing alcohol, "Cool Care Plus", Hydrocide, Dettol, Oster Spray Disinfectant
I usually just use rubbing alcohol, then oil the blade. I believe the act of honing removes a few microns of steel leaving a fresh sanitary edge. That will work for when they leave here, but I don't think everyone should be honing the razors. The edges might suffer from excessive wear.

The superspeed was sanatized in an autoclave at work. Unless there are some prions around (not from me) it is safe.

The box arrived over the weekend. I didn't really look at it until today.
I decided to work on my contribution 1st. That meant finding my hones and picking a few razors to travel.
Since the razors had been used as recently as a few months ago, I just used some finer stones and omitted the stones used for setting the bevel or honing out problem areas.
The 1st picture shows my equipment and the razors I will add to the box.
The other is a shot of the razors after honing and polishing but before final testing.
I thought it would be easier to post directly from my cell and explain later. I hope this works. But it doesn't look right just before hitting submit

Looks good, makes it temping to try again, even though I already have a straight that I don't use enough. I'm just stropping it for now, but will probably have to get honing eventually.
That's exactly why I have never pulled the trigger on one. I know myself and that is just too high of maintenance for me.

I think you overestimate the maintenance required for a straight or open razor.
Once honed, Stropping before use is all you need for most upkeep. If you have a strop that has both a cloth and a leather component, that is 10 passes with the linen or fabric and about 50 on the leather. I thought that sounded like a lot of passes, but, after a little practice, it happens quickly enough that I kind of notice when I get to around 40 that I am almost done. Because you are doing 50 passes per occasion, practice happens faster and soon you are getting done in under 2-3 mins.
Stropping (done properly) will hold an edge almost indefinitely. If you have a pasted strop, to use every few shaves. you may never have to have to re-hone that razor.
There was a guy who tried to shave with a razor he used a chrome ox pasted strop on 1-2 times a week and had that going for daily shaves for until he (and everyone reading) got bored. More than a year IRRC.
You don't really need to do anything that fancy for it. Folded newsprint (black) makes good stropping materiel.
Of course this presumes you don't do anything stupid to the razor, like using it to open your mail.
Once you finally need to touch up that razor, 10 passes on a barber's hone, Coticule or other finishing hone and you are back in business.
This big issue is that as long as the touch up is done similarly to the original hone job, doesn't involve re-setting the bevel which is where all the real work and tricks come into play.
You just ask the guy who honed it if he taped the spine, with what and how many layers. Most master honers don't tape. I do because I am no master.
So, on the touch ups above, I was the original honer on 2 of them and used tape for the touch up. The other 2 were purchased shave ready. I presumed they were honed without tape and did the touch up the same way.
I did all 4 in about 20 minutes and they all shaved well.
I did part of my shave with each. Enough to make sure they all cut well with no pulling and felt comfortable.
They were dipped in 70% isopropyl and are drying. I'll oil them tomorrow. I may strop them some more at that time.
I will look for a barber hone to slip into the box. There were a few I never got flattened and have to make sure I am not putting one of those in.

Top is a Bengall which I believe is a brand from Austrailia. It is what might be called a faux frameback. there is a thickened spine like a frame and a flat thin blade. Bengall has a following and is known to be a good shaver. It has a
Second is made by Morely and sons a British maker. It has a "barber's notch". It's classic shape and is much debated as to the function of the notch. Bottom line is that no one knows.
Third is the Filarmonica made is Spain. This is one of those legendary blades that commands premium prices. Some say crazy prices. This one got bumped from my line up by a bigger prettier less worn sibling. It is a very good shaver.

It has a spike point and shaves well. It is a blade shape that I don't care for because it shows problems in my technique by stabbing me. I find it a less forgiving point, but others love it.
As I have said the Bengall is a faux frameback. I am not sure on the Morley, it may be a light version of a half hollow. The other 2 are full hollow.
All are high carbon steel and rust easily. So it is improtant to dry fully after shaving before storage.

The hones from left to right:
The first is a Japanese finishing hone for razors. It is from the famous Nakayama mine. And has features of the 2 types of hones the Japanese would use for razors.
After that is another Japanese hone this is a medium fine hone and probably the coarsest of the hones here. It is a suita from the Okudo mine. Okudo and Nakayama are probably the most famous Japanese hone mine. Because it is white it is called shiro. So it is Okudo Shiro Suita. I began my honing with that.
The next one is another Nakayama stone. All of the Japanese hones are found in layers. this one is between the coarser tomae layer and the very fine and hard asagi layer. This is where you would finish with tools and knives.
The next 2 stones are from Belgium. The first is a natural combination of 2 different hones. The darker layer is the coarser Belgian Blue. It is probably a little courser than the suita, but is a slow cutter. That makes it good for therapy (it teaches patience), but the Suita is a much faster hone. The lighter side is a coticule. A faster and finer stone, suitable for finishing. The combination makes it a good stone for touch ups of a straight razor if you were to have just one stone.
The last stone is a tiger coticule with the pink stripes - very unusual and pretty. I haven't used it enough to know exactly where it fits, but is likely a fast finisher.

I think I am ready to send this to another person. I figured out how to pack the the razors. I just have to find out where I put the strop.
After the discussion on how to sanitize them, I decided to use 70% rubbing alcohol mixed with mineral oil. This way I dip them in and get them sanitary and oiled in one step. The alcohol evaporates and distributes the oil. The oil ends up in little tiny droplets. I just even it out with a (clean) finger without touching the edge.
I can also include some other items if they will fit. If these are going to B/Java I have a special treat for him.
BTW, the title of this thread says straight razor, is there one in there already that I didn't see?

Someone must have changed the title. There was only the superspeed in there when I received the box.
I have occasional tremors in my hands and especially after caffeine (coffee) so I generally shower and shave before my first coffee in the morning. I was originally concerned using a DE let alone a straight but I'm finding that it's quite easy to keep my face free of any blood and actually almost always irritation free even with my now go to Murkur slant razor.
I'm now very curious about trying a straight. I don't think I would ever use one more then a lazy day per week when I have lots of time. Making these beautiful razors available is really nice of you Pyment.

I went with function over beauty in choosing razors to include.
Using the straight with a tremor is very possible. I have one and I lay the blade flat against my face the raise it to a 20-30 degree angle before beginning the pass. Remember you are cutting alongside the skin, not scraping.
Same as when you use a safety razor, except with the safety razor, the geometry of the razor holds the edge at the proper angle.
Both cut while moving at a 90 degree angle to the blade. If you move with a slicing action with either edge, you will get cut.
Getting the pressure against the skin correct is important, but you have more leeway than most people imagine. Even so, too much pressure and you get cut.
the angle is critical. Too much and you get cut.
Water does most of the lubrication that makes it possible to slide the edge along the skin. Soap is there to prevent it from drying out. It provides some lubrication, but most is from the water.

That way, if you get a bad cut and people ask you about it on Monday, you can just say "I got that in a bar fight."

Interesting looking back at my last posts as I now use the straights almost exclusively and my hand shakes are of little consequence. I've also enjoyed learning to hone my blades.
I'd recommend anyone with a curiosity to try either the DE razor or the straights to take advantage of this opportunity.

Not right away mind you. Mrs Py gave me the dog eye this morning when she spotted a package of rootstock I got in the mail yesterday. She asked what it was.
I told her I was going to be grafting some trees on Sunday.
I think she had other plans for my time. I just have this feeling I'll be doing both.

OK, ready to be mailed in the AM.
This got seriously back burnered.
It took a remark from my darling bride to finally get me moving. The remark will not be quoted, but it wasn't complementary. After a pause, it was followed by, yo're sending used shaving gear to someone?
The delay should balance out any temptation to complement my generosity.
Added to the shave den were:
- 4 straight razors
- my practice strop
- a tube of Clubman Shave Soap
- a tube of Tom's of Maine Shave cream
Each Razor was given a touch-up on my Nakayama Razor stone, stropped, and immersed in a mix of rubbing alcohol and gun oil. The alcohol sanitizes the blade and disperses the gun oil before it evaporates leaving the oil to protect the blade. I use about a 1 to 4 ratio of oil to alcohol.
I do request that the strop stays with the kit as should the Filarmonica (everyone should get a chance to try one). The others I am not so worried about. If someone would like to keep one of the razors, send me an email and I will give them the option of keeping one from the kit (not the Filarmonica) or one selected from the razors I have on hand.

In my experience getting comfortable with a straight razor takes several weeks of very slow progress until a two or three pass shave can be comfortably completed. During that time I have not really heard of a person who has not ruined an edge by improper stropping or otherwise. It's part of the learning curve. So, give it some time and patience and you too can develop another expensive hobby. :D
If a razor is tugging and just doesn't seem sharp enough chances are the edge is rolled. I'd also be happy to hone up any blades for users if Pyment is busy at the time or wants to share the load. I have a synthetic progression up to a Suehiro Gohyumo 20k or a La Veinette Coticule that produce excellent shaving edges.

I read a number of ways to start off using a straight razor.. IMHO just doing your cheeks and neck to start is a good way to get comfortable, finish up with a safety razor...
In the old days many people had beards of various styles..
Under the nose is one of the hardest areas to shave, so lots of mustaches..
Goatee area around your lips comes in a second..
Those totally afraid had a full beard or visited the barber often until the advent of the safety razor..

I tried the den this morning..... started with the shark blade..... ouch I know why they call it a shark. Very painful, lots of razor burn 2 nicks.... not good with this razor. then onto the sandlewood I like the smell of it.

Thank you MP. Who provided the shave brush? I used it with Py's Clubmen cream tonight and the TTO Gilette and really liked it, though I don't think the TTO was as good as the Edwin Jagger.
What animal are those bristles from? I don't really care about what animal it is, I'd just like to find something similar for myself, and then pass this one along for others to try.

When you said that it you really liked the brush I assumed that it was a badger. I got mine off of eBay for around $15 shipped from China and worth every cent. I never did try a boar but I have a couple of horse hair brushes and they do the job.
I liked your version of the video as it was more complete. Those badgers sure like their snakes.

There is a lot of nice stuff in this kit. I was too scared to try the straights (and frankly I have no interest in taking the time to learn how to use them, as we have better options than 19th century technology now - no offense PY!), but have learned a lot about what I like. Much better having a package like this than relying on Amazon reviews.
So who is next? PM me and the Yakster to let me know where I should send it! I've added some Astra Platinum and Gilette Personna blades for anyone interested.

I took Paul's advice today and enjoyed the shave. Nice and CLOSE! I did over do it a bit and I have sensitive fair skin. A few nics but the after shave crème soothed the small rash. I know I'm going to like this. The shaving crème agitated in the cup was a nice addition and felt great! I am going to try thee straight edge. I'll report back!

UPDATE!
After 3 shaves with the Gillette SS and Astra blad I'm ready to move and try another blade. I have also spent 90 minutes going through this entire thread! I also have looked at the "how too" videos. My first shave left me with several nics and one small cut! The second and third shave I did not use the pressure I did on the first shave. Now after looking at the "how too" and reading the thread I understand my mistakes!!! I guess I should have read and looked first.
Question one for the straight edges: "Do I need to use the strap to sharpen before I use it? I will sterilize it first and rinse with HOT water. Do I need to do anything else?
Question two: Do I add the shave crème into the cup with the soap that is already there or use a no soap cup to agitate the crème?
Having fun with it all! I'm already to jump into the rabbit hole!!! :)

Jim - I would hope that any straight sent to you was stropped and shave ready out of the box. I would not touch a strop until after you try the blade as I don't know anyone who did not mess up an edge stropping before learning proper technique. The last user might want to give you a heads up as to the blades condition. If it's not shave ready I'm happy to hone and strop any blades. Keep a steep angle on your face (the spine about two widths off your face) and light pressure. Perhaps try to shave some arm hair first to see if its shave ready.
I face later exclusively these days but put a small almond sized lump of cream in a clean bowl or dip the brush in a container and then just slowly add water and mix away until you get the consistency you like.

If you want to learn to shave with a traditional double-edge razor, there are a lot of choices in handles and blades, and no matter what you choose that isn't very hard.
If you want to learn to shave with the straights, Pyment has provided an awesome starter set and others here have offered to sharpen them. I'm sure many here would help with that, and am sure Pyment would respond to any questions you may have about his straights if you PM him directly.
Or better yet, you could get the best of both worlds while the den is with you (which I think it will be for as long as you want it) - just keep using the safeties in that Gillette butterfly handle (or whatever other handles you buy) and read up on straight shaving. Unless you are like my friend Chris the bald-headed Italian, you probably don't have to shave twice a day, so you will have some time! ;)

I'm having fun with ALL THE STUFF!!!
I want to try the straight just to say I did! I haven't yet and I doubt very much I would make that my normal routine. I have already ordered my own double edge Merkur, brush, etc. I know I want to now jump into that hole.
On todays shave I was on my second lather and shave going against the grain.... my bad! 1/4 skin extraction!!! No band aid but a nice after effect is apparent! I need to be more careful. I'm enjoying a hot moist towel, the soak, the crème, the brush and soap. I just need to not be as forceful and more careful. My first shaves I used the Astra. Now I have a Wilkinson in the Gillette. I think half my hide is still attached! ::)

I certainly believe success is in just going easy, no matter what blades or methods you decide. The modern cartridges try to make that easier for us, but they clog.
I was too chicken to try the straights.
Whatever you choose, just go easy, no pressure (literally, don't apply pressure to the blade), and it all becomes so simple so fast, I wish I had learned that a long time ago. I would have saved so much money.
I'm glad you are enjoying the den! Enjoy it while you have it, and only pass it on when you are through with it. There is a lot of stuff in there, and it takes some time to sample it all.

P.S. I think you will be very happy with the Merkur! Nice choice. As good as the vintage speed/butterfly Gillette is, I think you'll find the modern German-made Merkur to be a lot better, and surprisingly so. Good Luck!

I just purchased 100 feather blades while the Yen is low. I love them in the feather razor and if I feel like I want to risk it I will stick one in the Weber.

A good part of what I like about the straights is there are no disposable parts. It's the link to the past and having to take care of them, keep them sharp and use them carefully in a zen-like concentration. I found after probably two months I was getting much better shaves with the straights then I was with the Slim adjustable, Muhle R89 or Merkur Slant. Only a small area under the right side of my chin seems to be resistant to clean BBS with the straight.

I'm sure the stropping ruined your edge. It's very easy to roll an edge and I know not a single person who has not done it. I'm lucky to have a few real honemeisters near me that acted as mentors for maintaining my straights, buying and using hones adn spending my money for me ;D. Without them I would have put my first in a drawer and left it there too. That's why I'm happy to keep honing anyone's razors (for shipping fees) as long as they are willing to keep trying. At the end of the day, I found it rewarding but everyone is different and no one is right or wrong.

Unless you are in the Society for Historical Anachronism (a real group, they do the Renaissance fairs and Civil War battle re-enactments) I don't see the point in re-learning this old superseded craft and then applying it on a daily basis.
Even the modern cartridges are better than those straights unless they are scary sharp and brought to bear in good hands. That's why I passed on the straights and am sticking with the DE safety razors. But to each his own!

I could not disagree more about your take on straights. Sometimes old IS BETTER. Carts totally suck and are a marketing ripoff. DE works fine but to my face causes more irritation and nicks. The key is patience in learning to use and maintain straights. Reasons we abandoned them might be a modern rush to get everything over with and marketing of disposable blades that keep you coming back to Gillette with your money for blades. Just another opinion.

Yes, thank you. But of course, if you are invested in any of the broad market indexes, maybe in a 401K through various funds, you are invested in Gillette, and are one of those shareholders! And I'm sure you like a nice (greedy?) return on your investments!

UPDATE!
I used all four straights in my shave yesterday. I am still alive!!!! I did have two straight cuts when done and had to shave again with my Merkur to finish the job! I am sure (maybe sure) that if I committed myself to only using a straight that in time I could get it right. (?) I have a sensitive fare skin and light beard. It cuts easily. My skin that is....
I knew I wanted to try the straights. That's part of the fun of the traveling shave den. With all that said I'm not going the straight route anytime soon. I have found my happiness with double edge. I still have a long way to go in learning how to do that right! I have learned that I need to TAKE MY TIME and enjoy the process. I need to know it's OK to lather as many times as needed to get it all off! I need to be careful "IF" I go against the grain on my face. I need to be VERY CAREFUL around my chin!
My happiness has been found in the prep work. The soaking of my beard, the pre crème on my face, and the brush strokes and painting on my beard. The cleaning after and the after shave and satisfaction that comes from taking my time and enjoying the process rather than a chore!
I have sterilized and cleaned the straights and after drying them placed them back into the protective holder and PUT IT AWAY. I have put all the items into new separate plastic bags and cleaned everything up. I have sterilized and cleaned up the Gillette Super Speed and wrapped it up. I am still trying all the different blades, creams and other accessories. I have added a new box of Astra blades and I will add a new after shave once I decide what to buy myself and I'll add one of those to the box.
With all that said I am willing to ship the box on to the next VICTuM. However I will continue to use the accessories that are in the box that I have not tried until I have a new home to send it too. I believe the straights are still OK to use as is... They still cut the skin just fine! The option would be me send the box to GC7 to examine the straights and adjust as needed. I'd be glad to add the funds needed for GC7 to resend to the next person.
What do you think GC7 and/or who would like to try this out next??? You'll be glad you did. YAHOO a NEW RABBIT HOLE! 8)

Jim- I'm glad that you have found a new way to relax and be mindful rather than rushing through a chore.
I don't need the whole box to re-hone any needy razors. Let someone try them first or perhaps check with Pyment first if this is all OK as they are his straights and I don't want to over step my bounds by putting them on my stones. If they require sharpening and someone wants to try them and its OK with Pyment then we can use a small box separate from the rest of the goodies.

MP - agreed that it takes a bit of time with a DE and getting used to sharp objects directly in contact with your face to get the urging to try a straight. If you remember your dad or grandfather using one or had a barber trim you up as a kid you might be more tempted to try. That and a Zen-like mind set helps too.

So I'm at that point where I no longer feel the need to keep my beard to look older. Up to this point my wife always said I looked like a over dressed junior high kid. I've always shaved with cheap disposables and hated it. I really like the idea of buying a straight a never buying another cartridge or creating extra waste. I have a few questions for the guys here. Even though I'm older now my face still gets bumpy is that any bigger of an issue with a straight? How's the upkeep? I have a few wetstones (220, 1000, 4000) and keep the kitchen knives sharp enough to shave arm hair. Is the process much different? Thanks!

I tried the straight one time and it's not for me. I REALLY LIKE the double edge and it gets you part way to what you are wanting to do. I's recommend taking a stab at this box of goodies that includes 4 straights and a double edge traditional razor. It has a ton of other stuff for the total shaving experience. I've REALLY enjoyed the traveling road show.
Now with all that said there are some experts here on the straights that can answer your questions. If you'd like me to send the traveling road show on to you to try I'd be glad to pack her up and ship her out to you! Just post your Ok and PM me your mailing address.

I completely agree with JSpain. I had that box for a little while and learned a lot. I'm 43 FWIW and have been shaving with disposables for years, but they are so expensive.
I never seriously considered the the straights as I consider them a 19th century technology. There are a lot of good things that came out of that century, but I think we have improved on razors since then. Just my opinion of course, there are lots of people who enjoy the straights, I'm just not one of them.
That said, using the double-edged razors that my grandfather probably used in the 1940s has been an eye-opener for me. Choose a handle, experiment with some blades and some shave creams, and you won't have any more bumps. And you will get a very close shave. That's from a guy who used to get bumps all the time and worked hard with those cartridges to get a close shave. I will never go back to those cartridge razors again.
Give the kit a shot! All you have to lose is the postage to send it along to the next guy, and there is no other way to experiment with all of the products that are in there. And due to the generosity of previous holders of that kit, there is plenty there.
Of course, the straights are there too in case you'd like to try them out. Some of them are very nice. And there is a strop included if you are feeling brave.

P.S. the key to double edge ("DE") shaving is a light touch, let the weight of the head do the cutting, otherwise you'll nick yourself. With the cartridge razors I used to use I applied a lot of pressure and got lesser results, but never nicked myself. When I first tried that with the DE razors I nicked myself a few times. But after a few tries it has become second nature, I don't nick myself anymore, and the shave goes quickly and smooth. There are YouTube videos describing this. I think many of them are over the top in terms of detail (it isn't rocket science, it is just shaving...), but I still think they are worth viewing.

Cranus - go for the kit and try everything. Then you can decide for yourself. There were no straights to try when I had it but I drifted to them anyway. I believe they give a closer (but for a small area under the right side of my neck) shave with far less irritation than the DE. Also, I love the maintenance and treat it and using the razor as a relaxing Zen-like experience every day. If you have the time you might agree. Using an antique that someone used for the same purpose before the civil war is a real treat for me. I have 9 different straights now and each is a different experience. You will need at least an 8K stone to shave comfortably and some CrOx or diamond spray will help too. As, before I'd be happy to hone up an edge for a GCBC member for only the shipping costs. I'll give you a synthetic 20K edge, coticule edge or Jnat edge if you desire.

Last night was a success, at least by my standards. Lathered up with the Tom's cream and fumbled around with one of the straights. I didn't cut myself anymore than I do with my disposables but I also didn't get the closest shave. There's a trade off there somewhere I'm sure. Took some time to figure out the best way to hold it and how best to use the blade but I can see myself getting better.
Wife wasn't particularly impressed with the shave but did comment on my nice smell. I made up for it by taking her to her favorite place. She had a burger and I had braised short ribs with gnocchi. It's a meal I'm obsessed with.

I'm having plenty of fun with all the shave stuff. I'm not sure I'm at the point that I'm good with the straight razor yet but I'll definetely be looking to pick one up of my own. Just an observation, but the razors may need to be honed? Having tried all four of them one definetely shaves better than the rest.

It has been maybe half a year now and I love, love, love my safety razor! Cuts close and doesn't clog. I wish I had known to do this years ago. Big money saver and great shaves.
Someone should relieve Cranus of his burden and try it out! You don't have to want to try a straight razor, there is also a Gilette "butterfly" safety handle in the kit, and plenty of blades to work through.
There may still be some "Clubman" shave cream in there too, courtesy of Pyment. Smells just like the barbershops of my youth. After I sent the package along I bought two cans of the aerosol variety (could not find the cream) and a small bottle of their aftershave. Very happy with both.
