Title: Espro Press - Travel and then Lottery, All Slots Taken
Post by: BoldJava on January 02, 2011, 05:38:42 AM
Randy Glass, member and author of www.espressomyespresso.com (http://www.espressomyespresso.com), reviews a new press pot that micro filters the coffee *after* it steeps in a press pot.  Meet the Espro Press.  http://www.espro.ca/espro-press/ (http://www.espro.ca/espro-press/)

I put it in the cart this morning and will test it out (complete with review) this week at our Pourover Throw-Down (we will have 5 kaffeinated kooks walking out of here).  This gives us a chance to play with it, provides valuable feedback to our members before dropping the dime, and circulates information about products. Complete review is here.  Always like Randy's stuff.

http://home.surewest.net/frcn/Coffee/espropress.html (http://home.surewest.net/frcn/Coffee/espropress.html)

Let's make this a traveling road show.  Looking for 5-10 folks.  I will close out the list by Sunday, Jan 9th at noon (or earlier if we hit 10).  I will pick a random number (http://random.org (http://random.org)) and that person ends up owning the item. If we have less than 5, no cost to the four.  The last person can mail it back to me.

Cost?  Listed below with a $.25-.50 bump for PayPal

 5 - $14.50
 6 - $17.00
 7 - $10.50
 8 -  $9.00
 9 -  $8.00
10 - $7.25

No payment yet.  Let's see how the list plays out.  Who's pressing?

IN.  love this from his review ( The "pot" could serve as a weapon to defend your coffee; it has mass and a very sturdy feel. )

Filtering element.  The coffee is NOT housed in this filtering chamber.  The slurry is plunged down with this basket and then the water is poured off THROUGH this filtering element on the way out of the pot and into the cup.

We will toss this one in the mix during the pourover throw down on Friday, Jan 7th.

First Look

This isn't a complete review.  Reviews should come with 3-months of counter space experience.  Rather, I will share my impressions and those of the group once we gather tomorrow.

Attractive.  Hefty.  Professional looking.  Fingerprint Sponge (police detectives would love it if it were the murder weapon).  Well made (China and Canada). Plunger is sticky without water in the pot (resolves - see below).

French press grind.  22 grams to 11 ounces of water. I preheated the pot with hot tap water. There is a space (manufacturer suggests vacuum) between the outer shell and the inner wall.  When brewing, I used water 45 seconds off boil and the outer shell was room temperature to the touch.  Suggests that the coffee is insulated and not throwing heat.  Covered coffee with water, blooming for 20 seconds. Add remainder of water and capped it.

Plunged at 3:40.  Plunging had a 'ball bearing' feel to it, as opposed to the stickiness to the dry/cold pressing without water.  Suggests an extremely tight fit that particulates aren't going to get past -- unlike cheap Bodum knockoffs.

Filtering system is better than generic/Bodum presspots because of 3 items:

1.  Plunger has a very tight outer edge/lip that is in contact with outer wall.  Bodum or knockoffs use a coarser grade screen on the outer edge.
2.  Very fine mesh on basket as 1st filter.  Bodums or knockoffs mesh is coarser by far than the Espro Press.
3.  Second filtering comes from a still finer mesh on the top of the plunger.  A Bodum has no secondary filtering.

Randy Glass's picture:

Cup?  Call it a clean French press cup. Heavy body.  Rich with oils, flavors but without particulates that occlude/detract with a French press.  Coffee finishes too hot to drink (forgot to measure temp - next run).  Less silt in cup bottom at 12 minutes. Let's estimate about 1/2 the silt of a press pot.

Cleanup.  Piece of cake.  Unscrew the plunger wand.  The basket filter separates from the top portion at an "o" ring.  Unsnap the parts, use your fingers, paper towel, or dish cloth to rub the oil and silt off the filter under very hot water.  Grounds?  Add more water, make a slurry, and share the wealth with the garden.  Reassemble.  30 seconds.  Done.

Impressions?

1.  Excellent clean heavy cup.  Would appeal to press pot fans.
2.  I cupped this with an El Salvador San Jose Finca, one with which I am familiar.  The cup is heavier than the pourover (Melitta whites) but that is to be expected.
3.  Great eye-candy that holds it own.

Do I want to win it?
1.  Yes
2.  Drawing to be held at the pourover throwdown tomorrow night.

Will I buy one if I don't win it?
1.  Does Wisconsin make good cheese?
2.  If it is February, will there be a Yemenathon?

Price - It strikes me as high for the item but at the same time, I understand start-up costs, margins on limited production runs, etc.  Love to support a small manufacturer that is trying to enter the game.  Vancouver company who also makes the new Toroid bell shaped frothing pitching that Santa put on me.

http://www.espro.ca/espro-press/ (http://www.espro.ca/espro-press/)

Ray, get ready.   Headed your way on Monday.

Young Dave will have to check my pockets on the way out the door, 'cuz I'm stealing this Espro Press.

For those who are looking to buy one and have wondered about regularly scheduled cleaning, I'll suggest Cafiza.  I use a SwissGold press-pot daily, and find that when I do my once-a-month backflush and soaking of the portafilter and showerhead screens, that's a great time to soak the press-pot plunger too.  I'd guess that the odd shape and extra screen on the Espro might require something like that too, to keep it in like-new condition.

Cafiza is cheap per use, and would make sense to be in most coffee geeks' kitchen.

This evening, Ryan brought his kindergarten-aged daughter to the cupping.  We had her pick her favorite number from 1 through 10.  Ryan counted each number aloud and asked her for her favorite number from them.

"4," she said.  Randy, the Espro Press will be all yours.  I would suggest that we ship it from number 3 to 5, and then Wild Bill can ship it to Randy as he will be the proud owner.

Make sense?

PS.  The Espro Press was a smashing hit.  Peter called it a "paper clean press pot."  I will be ordering my own one from Chris Coffee or Orphan Espresso this weekend.  Universally well-liked.

Yes, updated the 1st post to reflect the same.  My only concern is the jack that sits seed number 10.  Could be problematic.

I received the package on monday and got the ole new coffee toy eye rolling thingy from my wife. I quickly assured her it was only here for a week to test ( more eye rolling ) . So I cleaned out the left overs from the last pot Dave made before he shipped it and made myself a pot of SM Moka Kadir and her a cup of Mr Spains Mex Decaf. Her normal daily coffee is 1-2 Aeropress cups a day with a little 1/2&1/2, she was floored eyes were now bulging and saying that this was the best cup she has ever had ever ! Yesterday she drank 4 cups today 3 making it her self on the last one after watching me and jotting down a few notes so I think the Aeropress will be a backup now  ;D Also Steve will get his shot it sooner , Randys new toy got newer. AND Ray scored points ;D

The Czarina and I are sipping an El Salvador San Jose from the Espro Press.  The San Jose becomes a soft, dark chocolate bombshell with the Espro Press.  Ab-so-lute-ly stellar mouthfeel.  Full, coating, balanced, every corner.  Just the tiniest hint of silt. I believe they are onto something with the Espro Press.

22 grams coffee, course grind
11.5 oz water, 30 seconds off boil
pre-heated pot
bloom 20 seconds
add remaining water
press at 3:50 (includes the bloom)

Heavenly.  No, I am not a shill. It is that good.

Got home from work yesterday to find that the Aeropress ( missing from its spot on the counter )  has been retired and put away. ;D. I mentioned this and she says I cleaned it and its in YOUR coffee cupboard. The Espro Press now resides in its spot.  Her first coffee toy. I hope she lets me use it once in a while. So far the only complaint is the amount of brewed coffee you can't get out of the pot due to the filter design.

Thanks for doing this B/Java

My thoughts of the Espro Press.
I was very impressed with the quality of this press. All highly polished stainless and the double wall is a BIG plus.  I loved the coffee that this produced and with a few grinder setting changes the silt was reduced to almost nothing. It does work as advertised. The shimmer of oils on top of the cup made me feel a little giddy before that first sip. The small brew size was the biggest drawback to me. I felt like I was always brewing a half cup of coffee at a time. I was also bothered by the amount of brewed coffee that was left under the filter, then poured down the sink. Which only added to the dissappointment of its small size. A great device however I will not be purchasing one.
Thank you B/J for the chance to play with a new toy.

I got the espro yesterday, and the Grindripper showed up too... like Christmas almost.

So I decided to put them back to back this morning with some Injerto I roasted a few days ago.

I too have to say very well built press.  I like the double wall and the bling of it.  I agree with reddyK that I wish it was larger.  It would be great to make more than one cup of coffee with it, but for that one cup... great.

two variables in the comparison.  Grinder (used my grindmaster for the press) and of course the grindripper has both a grinder and a dripper, so the brew method was different.

Both produced a good clean cup, no fines.  The press seemed a little more silky/buttery probably due to the additional oils.  Both made with 24 grams of coffee the 300 grams of water.  The grindripper ~200 grams.  Tomorrow, I'll put it up against another press.

Espro Press arrived yesterday. Did a quick trial run at work yesterday but I over filled the container and had a lot of grounds escape when I inserted the plunger. I'm gonna take my time with it tonight and see what happens.

Inspired by this thread, I picked up an Espro Press a couple weeks ago.  Man!  That's a good cup of coffee!  If you enjoy the oils/body of FP, you gotta have one of these presses.

I have sent the Espro on to it's next tester over a week ago, but I just remembered that I needed to post my impressions.

I had overfilling problem the first couple of times I used Espro. The plunger system displaces a large amount of liquid/slurry and had a tendency to slop over the sides. After I learned to put in the proper amount of water the Espro produced a really nice cup. As others have stated, it's akin to a clean FP. The filter basket does go a long way to eliminate fines.

I had one big con against the Espro, and it's a deal breaker as far as adding one to my arsenal. It just doesn't make enough coffee at one time. My main coffee cup, which goes to work with me every day, is a 16 oz'er. The Espro barely fills it past the half way point. If I had to guess it would make 10-11 oz. Seems to be a lot of coffee left under the filter. Maybe if they had a slightly bigger unit I might get one.

Seems like the size is the main issue with the Espro.

Who has it now?

Randy

size is the only real complaint I am hearing... (wonder if we could market this club as an R&D, beta test, think tank)

must be on its way to Stubbie..

I have had it for about a week now, and done pretty much all the playing I care to do.  I'm coming to realize that FP just isn't how I generally enjoy my brew - although this press makes about as nice a FP coffee as I've tasted.

As Jason said, it leaves quite a bit of coffee down in the bottom along with the grinds and only gives about 8-10 oz per brew.  Great construction, but I'll give them (Espro) my money on a tamper instead I think.

On to RonL...

On to RonL...

I'm sitting on the stoop waiting for the mail truck to come around the corner  ;D

Is there a consensus on the amount of coffee, grind and amount of water?

Not sure on consensus.  Can tell you I like:

French press grind
22 grams
10-11 oz water
Bloom -10 seconds, swirl to ensure all are wet
Remainder water - 3:30 min steep and 10 sec plunge...

into eternal bliss

Tweak to your own preferences Ron.  Just a starting point.

Well... I've used the Espro for the past three mornings.  I guess I have to say that I am underwhelmed.  The cup is nice, with little sludge, but as pointed out, there is a fair amount of liquid left in the bottom of the press because of the filter design. I guess it's a trade off between better filtering or less waste.  The best part about it is the construction.  Stainless would be nice for traveling, but the weight would keep me from taking it over the Aeropress. The double wall construction would be nice to keep the coffee hot, but it only makes enough for one typical mug, so there isn't anything to keep hot. i think i prefer my Trudeau Tirra "pull" since the Tirra design gets the grounds up out of the coffee so it doesn't get bitter if there is anything left in the pot.  A combination of the Tirra design and the double wall stainless would be great.

I am shipping it out to RandyT today.. (no word from Charlie)  it does make a cleaner french press... for a home user it is under sized.. but it would make a great presentation of after dinner coffee at a fine restaurant..
