Title: CLOSED, ACCEPTING PAYMENTS - Orphan Espresso Pharos Grinder Traveling Road Show
Post by: headchange4u on April 05, 2011, 12:34:18 PM
This is the signup thread to demo the new Orphan Espresso Pharos hand grinder.

Quote from: Orphan Espresso
The OE PHAROS hand coffee grinding machine is the result of our long term study and use of hand coffee grinders.   It is built to satisfy US to meet the demands of VERY demanding hand coffee grinder users (that would again be US).   The grinder lacks some of the amenities of the standard coffee grinder due to our rigid enforcement of one central engineering rule....dead center alignment of the burrs with no wander shake or shimmy.   We invite and encourage all new owners to mod this mill to meet the requirements that YOU have to bring this into specs for your personal use.

As offered, the PHAROS features
68mm conical commercial grinding burr set
Top and bottom replaceable bronze oil less axle bearings
Stepless top adjustment made simply and repeatably using the included top adjustment nut tommy bar, which is included and stores readily on the machine
large ergonomic soft revolving handle knob
Rubber "popper stopper" top hole cover to seal top hopper when grinding
Rubber head reflex hammer to aid in grounds removal from lower hopper
Easy burr cleaning without take down and complete machine cleaning with simple take down followed by simple assembly (instructions included).
All parts are replaceable and available as spares if ever needed.
Built to last ...the assembly plates are aluminum, the axle and handle stainless steel, the lower hopper is ABS plastic and the upper hopper chamber is clear polycarbonate plastic.   All assembly bolts are steel.

The PHAROS is an aggressive hand mill which will grind from Turkish powder to French press.  Speeds as low as 15 turns per tablespoon in the espresso range  which settle in at about 25 turns per tablespoon for press.   The upper bean chamber holds 21 grams of beans and the lower chamber holds more than you could ever use at one brew session.

OE PHAROS Hand Coffee Grinder Demo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHNRX8NG0sk#ws)

Same rules as the previous traveling road shows for equipment: Each person pays a portion of the cost of the item, and then the item will travel to the various people participating who get to use the grinder for one week, and then it is shipped off to the next person. Each person is responsible for freight charges to ship to the next person. There will be a random drawing and the winner gets to keep the grinder

ACCEPTING PAYMENTS:

Total cost of grinder $256.98 ($245 + $11.98 S&H) = $25.70 per person + PayPal fees = $26.78 per person

Send payments to headchangestudio (at) gmail (dot) com. PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR GCBC USERNAME WHEN SUBMITTING PAYMENT.

How much does that puppy weigh? I'll bet it's at least $25 to ship UPS Ground.

It would be cool to have a Pharos sized cut-out in your desk or counter to put it in.

That's the first thing I thought of too.  Perhaps open up the bottom plate to accept a funnel so the grounds go straight down into a cone, press pot, or PF, instead of having to hold/tip/rap it.

There was a post on HB about the stamped ID of the units.  A guy caught 001/2011.  Collectors' item among a very, very small niche of geeks 20 years from now.

B|Java

Cool; if it doesn't pan out as a grinder you can take it on Antiques Road Show in a few years? ??? It might turn out like Uncle Irving's collectible Edsel convertible. As a vehicle it was a POS, but car collectors offer him ~$100,000 or so now. :o

I could only hope for a beard that nice.

When I grow facial hair I look like I should be hopping trains or on a street corner with tin cup filled with change and brown bag containing a bottle of Thunderbird or Mad Dog 20/20.

We still need 3 more slots filled. Anyone?

The grind.  I blew this up from a shot over at HB.  One of the threads talks about how conicals 'shave' the bean.  I can tell it in this shot; lots of curly queues.  Very interesting.

Funnel mod.  I swear he is going to get that beard caught in the grinding mechanism some day.  Listen for Barb's exasperation when he unnecessarily takes the plastic hammer to the grinder.  All married folks can relate to the schtick.

With the espresso grind, Doug uses the grinds to pull it on a one-group San Marco, the other lever that Warrior is restoring and powder coating.

I went to message OE this morning and guess what was waiting in my inbox:

Quote
Hello, I just wanted to let you know we have a delay in shipment of your Pharos hand grinder.  The new inner funnel, and the axle are taking a bit longer than expected to arrive, but we should have them by the end of the month, and ship very shortly there after (it will take us a couple of days to assemble).  The other parts are all here, and ready to go, as soon as we receive the rest!

We're sorry for the delay, and know you've been waiting so we'll get your grinder put together, and sent out as quick as we can.  We feel the addition of the inner funnel will be well worth the wait.

Thanks again,
Barb & Doug Garrott
Orphan Espresso

I'll wait for the funnel mod. ;D

Last call for anyone wanting to get in on trying out the Pharos. If no one else steps up I will start taking payments (assuming of course that those participating would want to split the cost 8 ways instead of 10)

Payment sent, after arranging an offsetting payment from a co-worker for covering lunch earlier in the week.  We take turns buying lunch and then settle up with PayPal... helps fund toys, coffee in my case and fishing gear in his.

Thanks, Jason, for doing this.

...
He had to get the last toy in the door past the Czarina first.... now he can slip another one past her.

Bingo.  Anything coming in now is chump change.

Life is a series of relative comparisons and then you die.

B|Java

Sounds about right.  Also, it always helps to buy your partner something they want between toys.

My wording is better; it lets you count coffee gear as gifts for the spouse. Mrs T taught me that; she'd buy chairs for my spaces and call them gifts. So now I buy Gaggia and other gear and put bows on them. ;D It's become a game that she has an unfair advantage at - I'm naturally frugal and she loves her Visa card. ::)

Post by: Tex on June 03, 2011, 10:30:32 AM
My Wife asked me last night what the Gaggia Factory was doing in the garage.  I'm not using it because it's ostensibly a birthday gift for my future birthday, but it looks like my hand was not well played.  She really likes the looks of the Gaggia Factory too, not sure she really ever warmed up to the La Peppina as it was lumped in with everything else taking up counter space and all my other coffee stuff.

I guess I need to get going on refinishing that sideboard, or maybe even trading out the La Peppina for the Factory on the counter for the time being.

Mrs T is dazzled by the glitter of the LP Professional and the Victoria Arduino copper machine, and she loves the looks of the brass Brasilia Belle Epoque 2-group that I haven't even begun polishing & rebuilding.

My point is - the glitz gets her in the mood for me spending lots of money, then I hit her with my cheapo Bunn & Gaggia machines and I like to think she's putty in my hands! Then I hear a delivery van stop out front & I get this stab of fear - what's she bought now? Compared to Mrs T's talent for spending, I'm an amateur accumulator!

If I time this right, there may be the chance that the Pharos will go up against not only my SJ and K10, but also a Robur and NS Mythos - these are the grinders at Counter Culture's Chicago training center. Maybe this will be enough to lure the northern contingent down for a trip.

Sherman, let's plan on that.  I have to hand-off to you when I am finished with it.  I could have it a week or so and then ride the train down for a Friday a.m. with the CCC folks and the Chi-town boyz at the Counter Culture Coffee gathering.

Organizing the next Chicago Get-Together sometime around late July/early August (7/30 or 8/6). I'd be willing to give up or trade my turn in line in order to have the Pharos at this event.

Bet'cha don't get any nibbles on that one <grins>.  We can have a Fall/Winter event and I can hand it off then.

Just out of curiosity; what are the replacement burrs going to cost? I can't imagine hand cranking enough beans through the Pharos to wear them out, but stones and other debris have been known to get into beans and damage burrs.

My bursa sac will wear out before the burrs do. <Mental image of Tex couch potato'ing to daytime soaps with Pharos and stale beans to test durability>.

Retail, it looks like $165-$244 for big end conical burrs.  I am sure Doug will offer them down the road at a bit more reasonable price.

I would suspect that even a dunce like me would know when to stop turning the crank, if the burrs jammed on a rock or other debris.  That's the problem w/ a motorized grinder; by the time you know it's happening, the damage is done.  I can't see that happening with a manual grinder.

My Compak has essentially the same burr set, and the factory says they're good for 3300lbs.  Let's see, I go through a lb./week.  Suppose I get groggy and up that to two lbs./week.  That's only 31.7 years.  Let's say the factory's 'extensive testing' is wrong by a factor of two; rats! I'll only get 16 years out of the burrs.

The Pharos landed on my door step today after it was delayed a day due to a signature being required for delivery. First impression is that this thing is one beefcake of a hand grinder. Built like a frikkin' tank. I've been fiddling with it a little bit, but I'm taking it to work with me tomorrow to start putting it through the paces.

Tonight I hope to read through some of the experiences and suggestions of people who already own the grinder so that I can make the most of my time with the unit. Thanks for the link B|Java.
