Not sure of production date but wanted to start a traveling road show. No money now but commitments needed. I estimate $20 each, on the high side. Picture courtesy of OE.

I will take 9 other entrants and have a random number selected. That number is the winner and goes to the bottom of the list and gets to keep it. Others have the opportunity to play with the grinder for 7 days and then ship it to the next GCBC member.

I think it was mentioned before that the burr is the same from the lido 1. This might mean it has he same feeding issues as before, something I was hoping for resolution on. The lido 1 still works great and they seemed to have fixed some minor annoyances.
In no real order.
1. Markings for burr adjustment.
2. There may be less static on the lower section due to removing plastic.
3. Easier to clean. Something that is not easy on the lido 1 without special tools.
4. Alignments don't seem to be necessary.

Maybe memory isn't serving me but I remembered the Lido 1 as having a glass receptacle into which the grinds dropped. Or is memory disserving me?
I am trying to figure out why Doug didn't grind with it. I kept going, "Come on Doug, grind with the da** thing."

They probably can't afford fresh coffee anymore! I've sent them a bag in the past just to say thanks for the "above and beyond" things they do for me every now and then. Maybe I should do so again. ;)

Haven't heard anything from OrphanEspresso recently, kind of wondering if this means they are in China overlooking production!

I hope they're not in China! I'm waiting for my Pharos to come in ;). My last last email (11/7) said "Hold For Grinder Build." I'm in no rush, but would really like it before Dec 11th. If not I'll have to use the skerton during my trip :'(

Yea. He recently posted about using a different burr than the Lido 1's, and that it would improve grinding for espresso .

I think you would give a better review since you use the lido 1. Myself, I just don't see myself owning this grinder, it's worth every penny but I just don't see getting my money's worth in use. So you can take my spot, I really don't mind. I have already won a roadshow in the recent past and this is just an exercise of my roots.

Oh man, sorry. I thought spot 10 might have been taken, but asked in case I missed something. It seems everything has been worked out, but I would also like to offer myself to be removed since I'd be taking a spot that was already filled. JBViau will be testing the post-production run from Orphan so he will be out. He communicated with me and I in turn contacted Tyme. Tyme is now an active player at position (2) on the first grinder where JBViau was listed. Tyme is eligible to win.

As of July 19, 2013, we have ceased production of the original Lido coffee grinder with a total production of 745, hand built, and numbered Lido 1 grinders. I just got word from Barb at Orphan that I have a beta-model in "mail hold" awaiting me when I return to St Paul this evening. Hoot!

Accumulated mail today included the LIDO2. After I have had a couple of weeks with it, it will make the rounds throughout Minnesota -- among the Gopher Gulpers. I will ask that they provide feedback if they wish to borrow it.
I am going to be doing "1st impressions." I am not much of a geek and more the "how do I like it, is it something I would buy and use, would I recommend to friends and for what usage."I have a 2nd beta test on another piece of coffee hardware, as well as distributions coming up. I will be picking away at the "1st Look," but will get it done. Just need some time.
I will be using it for:
* Espresso with the Cremina,
* Pourover with the KONE3/Chemex,
* Espro pots,
* French press,
* Vacpots, and
* Turkish
Look for feedback over the next two weeks on how the LIDO handled those tasks.

Put the LIDO next to a beer bottle for relative size comparison.
The scale was tared after the beer and the LIDO weighs 3.5 lbs. It comes with a rubber base for setting it in and using as a platform for 45 degree angled cranking.

I will get after the beta testing this week, but in the meantime, it is sitting on the kitchen counter. I am finishing up the bagging of 465 lbs of Colombia Esperanza, Huila competitive runner-up (not the Gesha Aaron is offering). My wife walked into the kitchen and said without prompting, "That's a good looking grinder you have setting out. I like its looks..."

J/K But I'm cool with someone taking my spot for free. The more people testing out the grinder and providing feed back the better, but this was my first road show. I'm not sure how past practices are on these things. I'm guessing there have not been this many bale outs though!

Used the LIDO 2 for the Ibrik (Turkish pot) this morning.
2:30 minutes to grind 30 grams to a fine talcum powder consistency. Took a picture and it's posted on the cupping notes (linked below). Note the pinched ridge and the grounds adhering to one another in a mound, as it should be with Turkish grind. Took some time and expected effort. Fully capable of a Turkish grind. Time consuming. I locked up the locking ring and will work on it with a rubber mallet. Failing that, I will grab some jar openers this weekend.

Lido1 can be used with a micro driver & OE power-up. I'm using a Hitachi DB 10DL and can grind thru a full hopper no problem. Lido2 had a unique handle interface and would require a custom drill adaptor. ;)

I find it funny that folks spend this much on a "hand grinder" only to attach a drill motor to it..... Why not just buy a powered grinder.?

I'm coming to the end of my week with the LIDO 2, here are my thoughts at the moment.
It's a nice piece of kit, very easy to use, probably some more learning curve left to scale, but it's not enough to get me off my LIDO 1. I'll elaborate when I send it off, probably Tuesday.

I received the Lido-2 today, with a nice little pack of beans (thanks, Ray!). Looks pretty simple to adjust; I set it up for espresso tomorrow morning. Let's see if it fits the bill.

Next in line and just received the tracking # from Bassguy. Just roasted up some Columbia La Esperanza from one of Dave's distros and some Kenya Makwa AB from Temple to get ready to play. Looking forward to playing with the 2 and doing some comparisons vs my Lido 1, as well as, my Vario w/ the Ditting/metal brewing burrs. I'm 100% brewed coffee, so I won't be doing any espresso grinding.

I've used my old LIDO1 for a few days now and have some thoughts.
The LIDO2 is great. It feels good in the hand, the handle is nice, it grinds fast and easy, little to no static cling, a great machine. The adjustment rings take some getting used to, I was afraid of locking them too tight perhaps, and they did move from time to time. I'm sure some more time would have solved that. Also I definitely did get some shrapnel popcorning out the top. Not a lot, maybe 2-5 bean slivers or chunks per batch. Not a huge detraction.
I've gotten used to my LIDO1, made my own silicone cover for popcorning, dealt with the static (always an issue in my climate anyway), and have managed to take its faults for what they are. It was built by hand in the USA, which is cool, and is still better than most grinders I can afford. Perhaps a few years ago I would have sold the old to get the new but for some reason, right now, trading up doesn't appeal to me. Plus the wait time right now for a LIDO2 is unappealing. That may change, all things do. Have fun!
TL;DR New LIDO is great, but I'm keeping the old LIDO for now.

OK, my thoughts:
The new version of this grinder has addressed most of the little niggly problems with the previous version. The funnel/handle makes loading beans simple. I think the adjustment rings will need attention from the owner, giving it that personalized touch. This is mentioned in the literature. The grind, as before, seems more than adequate for FP. But, with my small hands, the increase in grinder weight and the slippery mid section make it difficult for me to use for drip, much less espresso. I have to sit down, hold it between my knees, and go to town on it. I guess I'm just more into instant gratification than an upper body workout when I want espresso. ;D

1st Impressions - Espresso grind
15.5g Rwanda Rulindo, 4 days off roast, FC+, just initial snaps of 2nd and pulled for espresso use.
- '82 Olympia Cremina
- Took me three tries to get dialed in. First ended up in Turkish land, second one ran too fast, and the 3rd one, like the nursery rhyme was just right. 15.5 grams, 31 second grinding. No popcorning, no sticking.
- (I will mark the rings with transparent tape to indicate espresso area. Good for a starting point. Using the grinder for cupping samples, Turkish, and individual Espros - small).
- Pull: 8 second pre-infusion. 21 second, 20 gram ristretto.
- Flavors? Deep, rich crema. Thick flavors, navel oranges and cranberry/hibiscus. Very clean, balanced.
Observations:
15 second wait after grinding. Two thwacks on the side of the hopper, retention fell into the OE portafilter funnel. No grinds retained.
- I like the glass jar's secondary use for measuring/weighing beans.
- Used WDT out of habit. Less need than from my Macap M4C (doserless). Have to see long term if needed or not.
- Shot quality. Excellent. Seemed every bit as good as the shots from the 58mm Macap (head to head needed on like-coffees).
Reaction to the 1st Look:
The LIDO2 has found a place on my counter.Attractive enough to warrant it
- Like to use for smaller preps, individual cups
- Convenient. Need to dial in and mark (transparent tape) as I am not a notch counter at all.
Wrap-up/Recommendations after 6 weeks use on a variety of preps: - I found the grind excellent for grinds from Turkish to press pots, including espresso. Others report 'adequate' for espresso in comparison to Pharos/Titan. I am either less discerning or used to a grind with a 58mm.
- For novices wishing to get serious about grinders, I recommend the Lido2 without reservations as the entry grinder among those grinders with which I am familiar. Individuals can review notes elsewhere for the Knock grinder where others have done head to head between the two.
- If preparing coffee which requires higher amounts (60 grams or so) and a Turkish or Espresso grind is not needed, consideration should be given to the electric Baratza Encore as an entry grinder.

- Works well for drip and pour over
- I have had the best FP that I have ever made
- Same can be said for the clever
- Really easy grinder to work with. Grinding, adjusting settings, ect.
- IMO, the LIDO 2 could be considered a work of art. It is that nice looking.

I assume that the Hario mini mill and the Skerton have the same burr set (though the mini mill is spring loaded).
I have the Skerton and the Lido2. There is no comparison in the grind quality. The Skerton is very inconsistent in the grind size. The Lido2 is much more consistent. It is a case of getting just what you wish to pay.

I'll echo that. I have a mini mill and whatever improvement there is from lido to lido 2 is miles away from the hario. Good if it's all you have, but rarely thought about with OE gear around.

Ok, so I just did a 14 gram / 225 gram batch of my Guatemala Acatenango Gesha in a little V60-01, ground on the Lido 2 at 18 notches out or 1-2 (1 revolution 2 notches) and poured over with my Tiamo pouring pitcher using just the hot water tap from the cooler with a 30 second bloom and 2:30 subsequent pour and this is a great cup.
I'm celebrating the maintenance window being over, I get to shut down and go home.
I'm really liking this grinder.
Chris, do you think the Lido 2 is much of an improvement over the Kyocera CM-45? I'm using a Kyocera CM-45 when I'm travelling, and it only sees pourover use.

Yes, traveling is when I use my Mini Mill, because it is small and light. I have now moved it into my office when not traveling, but I do mostly impromptu pour overs with a Hario perma-filter. Perhaps a Lido would make office coffee more enjoyable. Hmm..

I consider the Lido 2 a significant improvement over the Kyocera CM-45 CF. With the CM-45 CF, I get boulders when grinding for pour-over and when I try and use it for espresso the step size is too large to easily dial in, you go from too fast a flow at one setting and choking it at the next unless you mod your CM-45 CF or also vary the dose to compensate for the lack of granularity in grinds adjustment.
The Lido 2 grinds are much more consistent and the stepless grind size adjustment has a much more gradual adjustment, so a small move in the setting doesn't make such a large grind size change.

If I didn't own the Kyocera I would likely get the Lido 2, but with two Vario's on the kitchen counter I don't need a third grinder for the house.

My impression? I love the old version, and think I will stick to it.
The new version is a little heavier, and doesn't seem to turn as comfortably as the version 1 did. I do love the lack of shaking needed to feed the beans in, and the more aesthetic design is a big improvement in looks. I thought the cruddy plastic on v1 made the catch jar slightly easier to lineup and screw on. The adjustment ring is a huge improvement, but it was easy at first to mess up the setting unscrewing the wrong section trying to get the catch off.
I could get used to the new version without a problem, but don't see enough advantages of the clunky old version to upgrade.
PS: Thanks for the beans, sosha! A nice fruity medium roast, they went through the Lido and into a pour-over nicely, and made a few bright shots for me as well.

It took a second adjustment to get the Lido fine enough for the Cafethema Lever.. but I have to say it does the job.. took about a minute to grind enough for a shot, but it did just fine.
I don't particularly like the glass jar for espresso, because it's a PITA to get it in the portafilter without making a horrid mess... but here are the two shots.... you guess which is from the Lido!!

The Lido 2 arrived at my place today. Even after looking at all the pictures and reading about everyone saying how heavy it is, I was very surprised. Nice piece of gear for sure. Hefty. I'll put it through some paces and report back.

I ran the Lido 2 through its paces this week and all I can say is "Wow". This is a serious piece of hardware. I use a Preciso daily and I did some side by side comparisons this past week. I have a small sifter I use to sift out fines and from my experience it produces considerably less fines than the Preciso. It is heavy and reasonable easy to grind with for pour over. That said, I realize how much I don't like hand grinding. While it may be inherent laziness on my part, I really can't stand to hand grind in the morning. My brain is too foggy first thing when I'm making coffee so most of the experimentation with it was done in the afternoon. The adjustment mechanism is cool , but if it is very not tight, it can wander a little bit. Overall, I was very impressed with it though. Very cool!!

The L2 will be reluctantly leaving my possession to move on to the next person today. It will be missed.
Right out of the box this grinder was extremely impressive. The design is gorgeous, and with the other OE grinders, it is built like a brick outhouse. Aesthetically, I don't the grinder could have be designed to look any better.
I like the adjustment mechanism better than the L1. It's nice not to have to remove the jar and fiddle with a coffee coated screw and nut in order to make the adjustment. To be honest, I used this grinder almost exclusively with me new Ponte Vecchio Lusso. I did adjust it out to a pour over setting once, but then moved it back to espresso. The L2 did choke the machine a couple of times, which I did not get the L1 to do but once. I can tell the grind from the L2 was more fluffy and consistent.
I also loved the grinding handle. It's now much easier to dump coffee into the grinder. I did think the black knob on the grind handle was overly stiff and awkward. I think if the L2 could be modified to allow that knob to move more freely, grinding would be much easier overall.
I did do one small modification while in my possession. Although the grinder is easier to adjust, I don't really see the purpose of the tick marks on the locking nut that you loosen in order to adjust the grinder. I also don't see why the adjustment nut has marks all the way around it. I think all is need is the single black tick mark on the adjuster and tick marks around a stationary portion of the grinder. With those ideas in mind I ended up taking a thin piece of masking tape and lined it with a tick mark every 5mm:

After applying the tape I found the "0" point of the grinder (marked by a 0 on the tape), or the point at which the burrs touch but you could still turn the grinding arm, and adjusted out from there . Using the tick marks on the tape and the black tick mark on the adjusting nut, I was able to find a sweet spot for a particular brewing method, adjust it for another brewing method, and the return it to a previous setting easily.
Overall, I highly recommend this grinder to anyone willing to pony up the dough. It's construction and performance it top notch.

I can whack it and it looks fairly clean, but when I unscrew the jar it always seem to dump out a bunch more coffee. I've also cleaned the inside of the grinder with an air compressor, and surprising amounts of coffee came out.
And one must be careful when whacking it. Notice the "Awkward screwing grinder on the jar" in my con list? That came from when I was whacking the jar to get out extra grinds, and the jar came loose, fell off, and broke. It never seemed to screw on the jar straight, although I found turning the grinder NOT the jar made things easier.
Luckily, I had my L1 here at work and the jar for it is the same one as the L2. So now I gotta get a jar for the L1. If anyone knows what will fit the Lido, and is readily available, please let me know.

Had a chance to play with grinder this week and I just PM'd hankua to get the address to send the Lido 2 to its final home.
Overall, seems to be a well built hand grinder.
However, I am solidly in camp with JW. Turns out I am NOT a hand grinder person at 5:30am. First morning I choked the Bunn twice before ending up with a 12-second double. Then I couldn't get the jar screwed on for attempt 4. I fired up the electric grinder for shot 5.
I'm just glad I got in on the road show; I was all set to purchase this when announced.

I received the Lido 2 from headchange4u. Like everyone else I am impressed. I had not seen the Lido 1 prior so I did not know what to expect. It is a very solid unit. Plenty of heft to it, in fact more than I had imagined. I will not be using one as my backpacking grinder, but it would be a great travel grinder. I was able to get it to grind fine enough to choke my Livia 90 and still make a very nice pour over. It still takes a little muscle on a fine grind but nothing the average person can't handle. OE hit it out of the park with this one. I still like hitting a switch but there is definitely a place in the arsenal for this grinder.
I am boxing this baby up and will be sending it off to It's final home with Tyme. Thank you Dave for setting this up. As usual it was a lot of fun and I've something else to add to the Christmas list.
