Now you are talking. 14.5."  $429 shipped from WLL. Put that Roscoe on eBay.

Call Baratza and get on their wait list for a refurb, $360.

That's how I got mine, bought a refurbished unit for a Christmas present.
But didn't call to get on a list, in fact, didn't know that was an option.
I just checked the site daily.

After initial issue of not receiving all the parts, I am very pleased with the Vario.
To me, the ability to change grinds back and forth quickly, and the smallish
counter footprint made it the perfect grinder.  Now I only need to worry about
longevity issues....for me and the grinder. ;D

It appears that my wife thinks I propose to spend much more money than I am.

Now the question is: do I take advantage of her weakening resolve to get a much more expensive grinder like the Elektra Nino or Mahlkonig Vario?

Or get the less expensive Baratza Vario and show her how frugal I am?

In the meanwhile, I am planning on getting some PVC pipe to use as a hopper.

That can't be a serious question.

I see you have forgotten the finer points of negotiation with the fairer sex (Abby does not count).

As long as you are here, what is the diameter of the neck of your Compak grinder?

I like the look of the short hopper from the K-3. The K-5 OD is 48mm, but I am having trouble finding the OD of the K3 short.

BTW the best (non ebay) price I have found for a new Vario is at Mercantila with coupon save10now which gets it down to $404.10 shipped.

The price went up $20 with the updated front panel.

I'm thinking Compak hoppers all have the 48mm neck.  Mine has their 'mini' hopper, I ordered it that way.

As to the negotiations with the fairer sex, you negotiate after you buy the K10.  It's always easier to get forgiveness than it is permission.  And if the missus is leaning toward you laying out some serious cash, you just jump on it.

I think this is going to be a 23-page grinder when the Ol' Py doesn't buy anything...he'll still be looking for a refurbished, mini hopper, for the silver throated Roscoe.
