Sharp burrs will scrape material off the end of a fingernail when you scrape it against the edge. They're dull when they won't do that anymore.

And that's reliable enough to know that you can then start making any/all other adjustments with confidence?

Good for you, 0***0!

I forget the exact number that Compak gives for the number lbs. a burr set is good for, something like 6,000.  If the rest of your grinder looks good, and perhaps you can find out from the seller what sort of use it's seen, you can forget about new burrs for a looooong time.

Here's what the Seller said to me in one of his posts:

Hey again,
I work for a distribution company that works with a couple coffee roasters in Chicago. One of the roasters is doing a complete overhaul of their shop, including their grinders, registers and drip machines. I accepted the grinder as partial payment for a delivery for them. The grinder is used, but is currently working perfectly- as was in the shop.

I guess you have no way of knowing anything concrete.  But if Compak's numbers are good, and that shop did 10# per week, you're good for 600 weeks.

Ditto that.  I can't believe you took the bait on the K10 ruse, Susan!   ;D

Grats Susan!  I love my Wega 6.4 (Compak).  It's on par with my Mazzer Major.  I can only imagine how wonderful the Compak K10 will be.

This is what I like about my K10, is that it seems to make up for my inadequacy; there is a much broader sweet spot and it's more forgiving than my Macap used to be.  I rarely have to adjust it, even for humidity.  The only time things are a little tricky is when the beans are very very fresh or very very stale, and that rarely happens.  The little markings on top for fine/coarse equate to about 5sec. per hash mark, so getting something in the right grind is easy-peasy.

So are you loving the K10?  I found a used Fresh on my travels a few days ago and the quality of the grind and the espresso shots are blowing me away.

Remember all those news items about stuff not getting delivered in time for Christmas?
My K-10 seems to have gotten caught in that backlog.
According to USPS is got put out for delivery yesterday, but when the postman came he didn't have it on his truck.  Hopefully today, but he doesn't come until almost dark....

I have a quart mason jar full of old beans that I will use to start the dialing in process....
I may be grinding all night....:-))
