Which espresso machine?
« on: August 24, 2014, 06:23:09 PM »
So I'm putting my wedding registry together and thinking I should add an espresso machine.  Although I may not get something thats over $1000 I'd still like to add it.  If you were to put a machine on your list between $1000-$1500, which would you choose?

What are you grinding with?  How many shots in a session/day?

I don't drink espresso that often.  It will maybe be 2-3 times per week, 2-4 shots per day.  I have a Breville grinder.  I was considering the new breville dual boiler - http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/breville-reg-dual-boiler-trade-bes920xl-espresso-maker/3253408?categoryId=12054

Not to be an ass, but why espresso?  What's the attraction?  Have you had truly great espresso, and are wanting to mimic those shots?  Is it a matter of curiosity, because you've heard that espresso is the purest extraction?  What draws you to wanting an espresso machine?

These are serious questions.

Serious questions indeed and can only be answered by serious money. Put your bank account number in the wedding registry.  :)

Peter those are all valid questions, and I'm sure I won't answer it correctly.  For me I love the intense flavors, the crema, and the simplicity of such a small cup of coffee.

Have I had a good shot?  Living in New York City and traveling the world, yes I believe I have.  Having tasted the coffees of italy and France to blue bottle, intelligencia, grumpy and many others I have had good espresso.

However, as much as I'd like a cremina or a rocket PID, it's just not in the books.  Not to mention NYC kitchen Realestate is quite valuable.

I have never used a Breville grinder. H-B suggests inadequacy for grinding for espressos.  I would set some long range goals if you are dead serious about espresso and start with a grinder which you commit to grinder for espresso.

The old adage for espresso is grinder, grinder, grinder then machine.

Oh cheaper better alternatives for pump machines. If you dont want a lever the breville dual boiler is you best bet. At least upgrade your grinder to a baratza vario.

Yeah, I agree.  The grinder has been fine for pour overs.  It was a random gift from my fiance, so I have to be delicate about it.
