Oh I cleaned them alright.  My hands are still raw from scrubbing and CLR.  They're clean now, but this is how they were.

That looks more like a 3-way valve's piston?

That's what I'm thinking.   Either that, or I put the entire piston assembly back on 180 degrees in the wrong direction.
