I know you don't think much of the Rocky.....at least not for pairing with Gaggias.
Is the Sylvia more tolerant of a mediocre grinder/

Susan

My objection to the Rocky isn't so much it's grind quality. For what one of these costs new, one could buy a much better grinder (Cunill Tranquilo) and have a hundred or so left over.

For $500 this makes a very attractive package!

Aha.....got it.
Thanks for clarifying that....

Like a lot of folks I used to say that the Gaggia MDF & Rancilio Rocky grinders were the minimum acceptable espresso grinders. They're still capable grinder (barely - they're stepped), but for what they cost new there are better options.

So do these folks: http://sovranastore.com/esgrin.html - but for $100 less!

www.espressoparts.com lists the replacement burrs as 59 mm - that's where I got my info.

I like that price better.  That is a great price for a grinder that compares in specs to the Mazzer and other great Italian grinders.  Have you had any first hand experience with this Robert?

Yep, I bought Susan's Tranquilo a year or so ago when she upgraded to a Rancilio MD-50. I used it for a couple of months and then sold it to a friend. He's still using it with a PID'd Rancilio Silvia that I also sold him. Great combo!

Here's a pic of the Tranquilo (aka ASTRA) next to my MD-50.

How did that compare to your MD-50?
