Title: Pourover Score
Post by: BoldJava on April 08, 2010, 02:31:03 AM
This week I scored 6 Japanese stainless steel, long necked (8") coffee servers on clearance. I couldn't believe it. $5 in the clearance aisle at a restaurant supply store.  Remnants of a large order.  Tagged at $168, marked down time and time again.  Owner said, "$5 each and they are yours."

Ideal for pourovers. Immeasurable control on volume and direction of pour. What a spout. I can pour a drip at a time and put it where I want. No back flow dribble with it. Was concerned about heat loss after pouring from electric kettle into server. Thermometer to the rescue. Water is at 199 after transfer.

50 ounce server.  Shown with his little brother, Hario Buono V60, with the Bee House porcelain in the background, praying for action.

Nice.

So you scored 6, huh? What are you gonna do with the extra <wink wink nudge nudge>.

Milo, Peter, Chad and I are proud owners.  One is being held for Yemen Fest raffle.  For your kind Hario efforts, the last one is yours.  Let me tally the total for you.

BJ, do you have a caliper or something to accurately measure the ID of the spout on the Hario? Eyeballing it with a rule would do just as well, really.

I may have a mod to improve the pour -- though it's more applicable to folks who pour slowly than who like to roil up the slurry.

One thing I've tinkered with lately is the old technique of pouring into a spoon held right at liquid surface in the dripper. That allows for a faster pour and avoids much of the "grind up the sides" problem I rant about. Not a new technique by any stretch, but one I'm appreciating more of late.

While I'm skeptical that this mod is quite original, I'm astonished to find no precedent for it.

I'll post more tonight.

Peter, do I have calipers in the house?  Good thing I know ID means "identification" or I might measure the outside dimension.

I can eyeball it with a tape measure this evening.

Hold the tape measure up the spout and snap a pic.  Then others will read the tape measure.

Calipers are those things you use to turn the brats on the grill.

Either that or it's shorthand for folks from the left coast.

I have a couple of calipers so I used them both.  The first set is the brat calipers, the second is the sweet corn calipers.  The third is the tip for Rasqual's study.

W: 5/16 x H: 7/16, ID, my best read.  MM's would read better.  That ruler is at Peter's house with the calipers I lent him and haven't seen since.

Oh, you lent those to me...

At least you didn't incriminate Peter Pockets with your misplaced calipers.

I can't believe I said I didn't want one of those.
