Peter,
Other than the fact that the seller does not seem to have ever sold anything on ebay before this item...And they just joined ebay ... today... I'm curious about your judgement that this must be a scam. Can you give any other evidence?  ;D

See you tomorrow.

Good question kelppaddy ... 92 pounds shipped for $25.  On the other hand most people won't spring for a $1500.00 roaster.  You may get a bargain at that price for a 2.5 kilo roaster.

Any takers?

I'll make you a sweet deal mp; you buy it, and then I'll buy it from you at twice the price.

I also like how the pics are obviously taken from the web.

To be honest Peter ... it would be overkill for my coffee consumption habits.  I wouldn't buy it even if it was only 2 hundred bucks.

So you figure this guy is a sheister eh?

you've nothing to lose by bidding on it! PayPal protects the buyer very well, and if it doesn't show up on your doorstep you've lost nothing.

If you can get it for $1500 - it's worth it.  I wouldn't sell my well used one for that price. :)

Scammer-alert!

you've nothing to lose by bidding on it! PayPal protects the buyer very well, and if it doesn't show up on your doorstep you've lost nothing.
  • Worst case scenario: Your money is tied up in the dispute process for a month.
  • Best case scenario: You get a decent 5 pound roaster on the cheap.

Worst case scenario: Your money is tied up in the dispute process for 4 months, then they close the dispute on a technicality.  BELIEVE ME, I have been through this...

One of their tricks is to get you to make an additional payment, for 'insurance' or 'additional packaging' or something.  If you make two payments for one shipment, buyer protection is VOIDED.  Note that on this particular auction, there is an optional cart.  If you make a second payment, that could be used to trigger the 'two payments' clause.

A savvy scammer will send you something with tracking/signature, and then use that number to contest it, and say that you are scamming them.  During the entire period of the dispute, there are lots of hoops to jump through, and if you inadvertently miss one, you might find yourself screwed, blued, and tattooed.

Even if you used a credit card, you risk having PayPal freeze your account if you reverse the charges before they have closed the dispute, or put a sudden hold on funds (that may have a cascading effect).

As peter inferred, if something looks too good to be true, it probably is.   Folks don't just appear on eBay with such an auction immediately upon registering, unless they have been out there before, and don't have their original account for some reason...   ::)

An additional note:  the return policy is 'not specified'.  That means that the guy could send you pieces and parts of this roaster, or even a poster of it, then when you complain he could have you return it at your expense for a refund minus shipping and a restocking fee.  This is another scam that gets used, because if the seller agrees to a refund, then the onus is on you to return the item, have him sign for it, and then if you have done everything properly you can still be dinged with fees (PayPal allows this).  15% of $1500 is $225 - so there is a pretty significant risk here...

I guess most folks would've been suspicious of the brand-new, nearly-complete Sonofresco I got for $225? A calculated risk can pay off big-time, but it's always a risk -   Not for the weak of heart!

I would never send $1,500 to somebody with zero feedback.

On eBay, from someone with zero feedback, that just registered the same day as the auction started?

I've done enough business on eBay that I figure my risk is controllable. I'll be bidding on this, so the rest of you lay off, OK?

Having had the same eBay account since 1996 when there were less than 40,000 members, and joining PayPal a month after it started in 2000, I had the same delusions - until I got screwed outta a couple large.  Good luck, Tex, you got cojones like cantaloupes.

It's the classic economics conundrum; Risk Aversion - The unwillingness to take a risk a unless the risk is eliminated. There's no right or wrong implied; some folks are risk averse and some see the value of a calculated risk. Seems like most folks here fall into the former group?

Hahahaha!

It's not like the choices are to take (zero risk) or (all known risk) without any risk analysis involved.

Key points to consider are zero feedback, better than normal deal, not answering bidder questions....if you continue to find question marks along a long enough time line bold risk taking can become reckless gambling... :-X

And there's plenty of ways to lose money w/ egay and paypal, as BW attested to.

Quote
# Worst case scenario: Your money is tied up in the dispute process for a month.

That may not be the worst case scenario.  You need to be prepared to lose some or all of it.  And the hours it may take to resolve it, even if you do get  your money back, is not something I'd want to deal with it.

I hope you get it.  I wish mp would get it, and sell it to me for twice the amount.
Title: Re: Artigiano 2.5 # shop roaster/Ebay
Post by: Tex on March 29, 2009, 12:39:24 PM
It's pretty simple really; if you're going to play the eBay game you'd better learn to play by the rules. But that goes for any purchase; read the fine print before you buy! As for the zero rating - every eBay seller starts with zero, that's no reason to avoid bidding. And sellers often start a $1000 item with a $1 bid, knowing that knowledgeable bidders will understand the starting bid isn't where the final bidding will end.

eBay has very strong buyer protections built into their buying/selling agreements. I've made some pretty good buys over the years and one or two stinkers. I've also ended up selling stuff for a lot less than I thought it was worth, but that's part of the eBay game too. All I can say is that if you don't read the fine print you're going to get burned.

I don't understand some of the cynicism shown here. Are you guys trying to hold bidding down so you can slip in at the last second with cheap winning bids? Or are you so paternalistic that you're trying to be the shield that protects everyone?  ::)

I seriously doubt it.

I guess I can only speak for myself but I doubt the thing even exists so I would not bid $20 on it.

I don't think you are going to bid on it either.  :-\

Well day three from my asking questions from this seller and still no response. I'm really starting to feel terrible about his mother-in-law. This poor fellow never made it back to work to even answer my email questions????? I'll bet Tex is getting ready to fly to Kentucky to help this poor family out!

How will he be able to get this roaster delivered? How will he be able to even make the deposit of his incoming funds? I'm feeling sorry for this guy. Business is either so fast and furious he can't even answer his email questions or that poor mother-in-law is in really bad shape. Maybe we should all go together and make a bid in behalf of the club? This poor guy needs our help?

We've learned to not let our Mother-In-laws get sick during ebay postings! Family first.

I'm actually pretty lucky. Over the years I've only been scammed once on ebay and purchase agreements on the web. I've made many transactions and I am a trusting sole, but this one stuck out like a sore thumb. Jim
