Broken Gaggia Coffee help please
« on: April 12, 2011, 06:52:01 AM »
I won this great machine at last years Coffee Kids auction. I am not a big espresso user so I had to conserve valuable counter real estate in the kitchen and move it to the garage where it has a great place next to my grinders, sealers, and cupping supplies.
The problem is I set it out there in the winter and the garage is not insulated. I went to use it out there the other day and water came pouring out all over. I was able to take a picture of where the water was leaking out from and I was hoping someone could steer me in the right direction on what needs to be done to fix it.

Thats kind of long winded. I do like a story. :)

the picture I will try to include is of the inside. There is some black discoloration just north of the hex screw and that is where the water is coming out.
If I cant upload the picture I can email it to anyone interested.

Thanks for the help

The photo is too blurry to see anything, but I fear you cracked your boiler (it probably froze)

Thanks Larry, I am sure something froze. It got down to the teens in the garage this winter. I have looked at a couple sites and I can find the gasket between the boiler and the group but not the boiler for sale. Is the boiler something that isnt worth replacing?

An all-too-often occurrence. :( If you're going to store any espresso machine in a cold environment, partially empty the boiler so there's room for ice to expand.

It's worth replacing if you enjoyed using the machine. Here's what you'll need.

Cheap enough when you figure they'll last for decades if you don't freeze them with water in the boiler.

FYI: I've always found Electra-Craft to be the cheapest source for Gaggia parts - plus they're the only supplier with the group gasket for the OWC.

Thanks guys, that's exactly what I needed to know. I will be ordering today.
Now I need to take some real good pictures of the wiring and how it all fits together so I can put it back together correctly. That might be another story.

Thanks for the help,

Troy

Because my memory is so bad, I tag the wires with numbered labels and make a drawing of where everything goes. And lots of pics isn't a bad idea either.

Another option is to check for a cheap Gaggia resale from Craigslist.

Just a thought.
