Magnetic Stirrer Brew

I've always been curious to try a magnetic stirrer for making coffee.

Today, I saw an Instructable on how to make a cheap one... I may give it a try.

that's cool and ingenious. For coffee though you's have to buy a stir bar that can handle the temps. Polycaprolactone is very pliable at 60 degrees C.

As a former chemist, I used stirrers a lot.  I had devoted some thought to using a heatplate/stirrer setup for my stovetop stockpot roasting arrangement, but the cost of a unit to heat and stir one pound of solid material is prohibitive, upwards of several hundred dollars.

Ebay seems to have a fair amount of these pretty cheap and they may even have a heater.

I've made one using a cigar box.  Been using it for propagating yeast for beer brewing.  Fast, cheap, works great and is fun to watch!

Hmmm ... I suppose a regular teaspoon is out of the question?

You can also get super strong magnets out of old hard drives.  They are odd shaped though but for free or nearly free don't complain heh.

The star screws on them are typically a number 7 torx.  Bit of a pain in the ass finding that size sometimes but Harbor freight generally has them for a few bucks.

The rest of the drive is recyclable too.  aluminum 40 cent a pound,  platters, 3 to 8 dollars a pound, circuit board, about 8 dollars a pound, plastic 35 cent a pound for abs, motors about 18 cent a pound or maybe can sell them as cull aluminum for slightly more.

Just throwing in two cents where it probably is not cared for ..

A teaspoon doesn't require a soldering iron ;D

Plus you'd probably get tired of stirring after a couple of hours with the cold brew / infusion.

Hmm ... so you would want your brew stirred for hours?

I might do a cold brew or an infusion for hours.  They're typically at least overnight without any agitation.

Yeah ... I do mine for a couple of days and nights in the fridge. When I put in the ground coffee I just stir a while until it is well mixed and let the passive extraction work its magic.

Some of the best extractions of Kenya AA coffee I've had through this method. It's simple, easy, and captures all the nuances of the coffee.

How about a goldfish? The caffeine would excite 'im, increasing agitation.

and at the end rasqual,  we have what?    Fishy Luwak?   Goldie Links?

so a cold extraction is essentially just leaving coffee in a jug of water in the fridge for a day or so?   then what french press the grounds out?

Yeah ... or you could throw some organic sugar in their and throw in some water kefir ... you'll get a bunch of movement with those water Kefir grains. No magnets, no electricity ... just natural chemical reaction.

You could I suppose.

I use a gold swiss filter with an imbedded white paper filter for the fines.

Works like a champ.
