HG-One Hand Grinder
« on: October 12, 2012, 06:18:41 AM »
Lots of buzz about this grinder on H-B with a pre-order deposit of $250 (cost is $840). Available ~ Jan '13.  I have no interest in buying one but I do like the "bling" and the idea of a 71- or 83-mm set of burrs.

Rock on, grind on.

I heard they may even have the grind distribution problem solved. It was notorious for creating shots that channeled.

I am still waiting on Voodoodaddy to get back into making the mods for the Pharos. After the mods, I think I will be set.

This looks like Versalab.  http://www.versalab.com/server/coffee/grindernew.html

Any thoughts?

Last week I was getting coffee from a dealer, and he made me heavenly espresso with it.  Although La Marzolco GC/3 helped a bit.

You'd be surprised how little the machine has to do with the quality of the shot (supposing it meets minimum standards?).

I'll bet Babe Ruth could've hit home runs using Shillelagh?

Aren't you just restating what smico said, when he stated the GC/3 helped a bit?

I have Brewtus IIIR, and I don't need better machine, but I do need better grinder than Vario.  I realized that after trying Pharos.
For some reason I read $480 price in the first post, but now I realize that it's $840 is above my allowance...

Thoughts about Versalab?
Great concept – not so great implementation. Read http://www.home-barista.com/grinders/versalab-m3-grinder-owners-t11677-70.html on Terranova’s attempt to re-build it to tightened tolerances.

Thoughts about HG-One?
I exchanged e-mails with them asking few very specific technical questions and was impressed with their answers. In my personal opinion their design is over-engineered X10 at least. If their manufacturers conform to the tolerances requested – we’ve got a winner.
As to real life performance – we’ll have to wait till January and see ourselves.

Planning a trip to Toronto in January?

Like you I’m happy with my Brewtus  but not so much with Vario… to the point that I equipped my LeLit 53 with Vario timer an using it since

That was my question too; so a great grinder can be built that doesn't have a motor, OK, but what's to be gained by that?

My assumption was that it was 480, which is in the same ballpark as Vario.
Now at 840... Well Famroast sold new Major for that or less.
But I still like big conical burrs and slow speed.

Now that much more details are available on the HG one website concerning the design and build quality, it certainly looks to me like the $850 price tag is warranted.

With the all the problems I've had with my Vario in just 2 years (I am currently on my fourth grinder) and considering how better the Robur burr set is, this grinder seems like a much better deal in the long run.

The Mazzer Robur or K10 would be nice, but considering the grind retention, size and price, the HG one seems like a much better deal.

The only complaint I have heard is the lack of adjustment markings. I would be all over one of these but the Pharos with the upgraded catch cup is working perfectly. No waste and it is very easy to clean up.
