Tody vs large cold drip
« on: January 06, 2013, 12:05:29 PM »
Been thinking of getting a piece of 'art', the large cold drip from Yama, but wonder if that ends up being overkill vs something like a tody. For home/office use. Worth the extra $270? Or is it mainly for looks

Would the fancy glass & woodwork make better coffee than this?

I'm guessing you've had cold-brewed coffee and like it, yes?

If not, try a cheap version before plunking down that kind of cash.  I personally don't like the results of cold-brewed as straight coffee; it loses too much and gets bland.  But I love the concentrate I get out of my Toddy (the one in Tex' picture; he has my Toddy along w/ Milo's Sono) for iced coffee drinks.

I usually end up doing an iced coffee at work via the areopress and a stainless frothing pitcher, toss it in the freezer for 20 min then pour.

I had a Yama once, but that was from Press roasters about 2 years ago. I got lucky, they say the sell out of it usually by 9am. Phoenix is really a place for ice, when its usually over 55 degrees in winter.

I figured a Tody would be the way to go as its cheap, but at some point I will have a complete room/lab devoted to brewing, possibly have to include roasting too. I was thinking that the Yama would be about the same quality in the cup as there isn't too many factors at play in cold brew. And I figured if you guys set soda cap pours to rock music you most likely already ran this silly scenario.

I tried the AP cold drip thingy during the summer.  Couldn't get the dripper part thingy to work right.  A needle-valve setup with some lab equipment (the words ring stand, erlenmyer and solution doohickey ring a bell to me, but its been years) would probably yield similar results to the yama without prettiness and at 1/3 the cost.  Another option would be to explore the tiamo cold brew thingamabob that is the cheap alternative to the hario cold drip, OE offers it for sale on their wholesale site, unclear whether it can be purchased individually or comes as a case of multiple units..

Ever see the cold-brew setup at Blue Bottle in San Francisco?

Super cool way to make coffee (pun intended)!

All good info!

Yackster, I havn't been to Press in 2 years, I remember liking it but I did't fall head over heals for it. I had that cold brew Yama and a mocha, it was 55 that day I think :) I didn't flip oiut at Intelligencia either for a single shot. Stumptown though, they got me. I had 3 doubles before leaving. Thanks for the above as well.

I can get a Tody for sub $45 I think. It's just monsterous and I believe is meant for the fridge as well over night. I have room randomly. The art installation though could sit next to my counter machine, on top of the wine cooler :) This does actually point the finger at the fact I never actually have had cold brew except that time at Press. If I go the science fair AP route I'll skip the whole drilling and use one of my JG valves and line. Wondering what the 'cold temp' of the water is supposed to be I might be able to tap directly into my cold line on my fridge for the dripper.

Something like this would be a good start. Maybe even a distillation kit to ensure pure water?

Looks like it's $38. at Amazon right now

and I don't think it needs to brew in the fridge.  At least I've never seen it brewed except out on a counter....

My RO filter yields 11ppm, pure enough? I, at least used to think, was from the school of thought we need some solids for 'correct' flavors in the brew, or is that hot only kind of thinking.

11 ppm is pretty clean.
