Roaster heating element

When I was roasting beans to send to Chris down in California I was having some problems with the temperature on my Gene café. During the last roast, I could barely get the temperature above 460°. My voltage was a little volatile but high enough that I have never had the heating issues at this voltage in the past. Could the heating element in my Gene be going out? I only have a little over 100 roast on the thing.  Do these heating element slowly fade away or burn out all at once?
