Nesco (Zach and Dani) coffee roaster
« on: March 14, 2009, 07:01:13 AM »
Hi all,
My 2nd Nesco coffee roaster quit  ??? working recently, and I sent it back to Nesco.  They reported that it is unrepairable, as there was some melting going on inside the unit.
This is the 2nd unit that has had a melt down and had to be trashed.
Are the newer units any better, or should I just go with a different roasted all together?
I also have a fresh roast 8, but the wife makes me use it outside do to the smoke issue....not good when it's 20 degrees outside.
Any suggestions on another roaster would be appreciated.  Cost is a factor unfortunatly.

Hmm ... check out the SC/TO post.  Fairly cheap if you build your own and works well from what they say.

My 2 cents.

I 2nd mp's recommendation!  You could be roasting 1/2 - 1lb batches for under $50 if you scrounge and <$100 if you just go buy new.

SC/TO saved me from air popper burnout... :)

Except that the SC/TO will force the man out of doors again.

Better yet, find a way to exhaust the smoke.

peter's patent pending smoke pulling paraphernalia... (coming to a roasting corner near you)

I suggest you look at SC/TO and maybe vent out the window... I have seen some good low tech ideas on line if your stove hood is not an exhaust fan.  You can get a helper fan for heating ducts at your local big box hardware, probably a 4 or 6 inch will do.. then get flexible metal duct like they use on a clothes dryer vent... put the fan plowing out the kitchen window and put the other end of the duct over the roaster, that should get a large % of the smoke... I have a similar setup to vent our pottery kiln and the plastic blades are still spinning...

Here is a good deal on a Behmor.  It has a pretty good smoke filter on it and roasts 1/2 to 1lb pretty well.

It's a "bit" more than a SC/TO.  I happily have and use both.

He might want to consider getting a range hood ... this works quite well in catching and redirecting smoke outside the kitchen.
