Nicro Stainless Steel Vacpots

Hmmm....

Snagged a Nicro 510 off of eBay with a Cory rod.  Very supple gasket. Nice tight fit. Has seen some miles.

Situation:  water temp issues.

Approach.  Heated water to 202 in the pot, without the dome.  Put the Cory rod in and put upper dome on.  Did not lower heat source.  Temp of water in upper chamber after 5 minutes remains 170, just like it does if I start with the upper dome on and begin heating.

Who has a Nicro?   Have you measured temps with thermometer?  What gives here?

I had heard good things about the Nicro vac pot. And as I have been looking for a SS vac pot for everyday use, I started checking Ebay for one. In the meantime I started a post on the vaccuumcoffeepotcollector Yahoo Group for recommendations. I mentioned the Nicro brewer and received these comments:

.....The nicros are quite popular, maybe for that reason. What I ran into with them
however is that you have to preheat the water to a fairly hot heat before
putting the top brewing chamber on it. If you put it on cold as I do with glass
sometimes, it tends to raise the water way before its hot enough for a good
brew.

As far as the Nicro, they are tricky to work with in my
opinion, you have to let the water get very hot before you put the upper on and
that's kind of a pain. That has been my experience anyway.

Hope that helps some.

B|Java,

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for your Nicro?

Thanks.  202 strikes me as sufficiently hot to offer more than a 170 steep.

Sounds like the metal is dissipating the heat more quickly than glass/pyrex.

When I measured the temp it was 172F from the second the water hit the thermometer, so I don't think it's the metal dissipating the heat. I think it's just that temp from the beginning.

Still makes a great cup

Interesting, the variance between this and the Yama.  I may have a Nicro to sell Keith.

If you decide to sell, I may be interested (if Keith doesn't want it).

I think I tried o buy that one.... guess your pockets are deeper :)

I would try hotter water in the bottom and see if you can get the top temp closer to your yama...  (or pack it up and send it to the GCBC R&D Dept {me} for thorough testing)

Good score, on the Nicro!
I got one just like yours Bold Java, for $3. last weekend, complete with glass Cory Rod. However, the gasket is shot. I resurrected another Nicro with a gasket from a wide mouth glass vacpot a couple of years ago that works well, I wish I could find some replacement gaskets...sigh.

As far as prep, get it good and hot before adding in the coffee. Do a wet run without coffee grounds, and lower the heat until the water returns to the lower bowl. Increase the heat, and when the water fully re-enters the top globe then add in the coffee. @ 3 minutes remove from heat source and try to get the time to 4 minutes total time of coffee and water in contact.

Great way to make coffee in the woods!
