Paper Filters for the Hario V60, "Aroma" brand vs. Hario

The sequel.

Bob the Roaster, (BIL) and I made the Milwaukee circuit today, picking up some Aroma Brand #1 filters.  In the morning, there will be a throw-down, where we cup the Intelli Los Delirios and compare the cups.

Aroma (left) vs. Hario (right), proudly brought to you by my Wisconsin backyard Pink Lady heirloom tomatoes, 1-lb'er pictured.  Shameless plug for Wisconsin:  Land of cheese, beer, brats, and home gardens.

Stay tuned.

Shameless plug for Wisconsin

One of my favorite childhood memories is a motor home vacation to Wisconsin. I don't even remember where we went, but it just sticks out to me as being beautiful and smelling good. Plus I got to go bungee jumping! I was only about nine or ten, the lightest person to go up to that point.

I see your shameless plugs and look around the 'nati. Eh.

My fifth and last overnight canoe trip to the land of glacial terminus this year featured my first Sumac infusion in over 20 years. Just crushed it into my water.

Came home with a couple seed heads and did a larger batch: froze it and enjoyed it as it thawed the next day.

Awesome stuff.

The filter on the left has German words on it, so it will be better.

Not sure about your Hochdeutsch, but I think it says, 'recylced barn-floor cardboard.'

The Aroma brand is a challenge as it cone-with-a-flat-bottom shape \_/.  The Hario Ceramic V60 pourover is a funnel shape, without the flat bottom.  \/.

Aroma filter dry. (1)

Aroma wet filter (2)

The Aroma, because of the ill-fit, pulled away from the sides and didn't make the best use of the rasqualled phluted physics.  Steep contact time:  1:10 minutes/seconds for 10 ounces of water in 22 grams of coffee.

(1) Hario Dry (made for this Hario V60 pourover)

(2)  Hario Wet

Note the rasqualled phluting physics in play.  Identical steep time:  1:10.  22 grams of coffee, 10 oz water.

AP Wire, Lake Cheddar, WI.  Brandy Wine, reporting

Fight results:  Hario Slurps Superior.
Sub-headline:  Aroma shamed and returns to Germany.

Fit:  Hario.  Perfect point is designed for the V60.  Aroma had to be 'force-fit.'

Steeptime:  Both filters permitted a 1:10 steep with identical amounts of water.  The Hario 'ground mound' was more even, level and probably permitted a better extraction.

Texture:  While the judges were unable to make a determination of quality, the Hario is a lighter colored paper with more texturized surface.

Cup:  This is where the Hario filter shines, hands down.  Here, the 'non-rubber meets the road.'  With the Aroma filter, a light cardboard taste appeared in the central 2/3rds of the cup.  The taste surfaces on the back of the tongue/palate.  We were unable to discern any paper flavor in the Hario filter whatsoever.

Cost:  Aroma's filters are 2.95 cents each; Hario's cost 6 cents each.  Value has its cost.

Winner:  Hario in a cakewalk.  Bring on Herr Schmidt's "If You Care" filters.

Conclusion:  I am becoming a believer in the rasqualled phluted physics (RPP®).

Look for a pending "second opinion," from a Southern Brother whose name rhymes with Pasqual.  It isn't that he doesn't believe me; more of a natural disinclination to accept at face value statements that come from north of the 42/30 curtain.  That is fine; we have been known to disbelieve ponder in our hearts considerably anything that our Illinois brothers spew forth. <grins>

Not in evidence, yet, are Hario's brown filters.
