Rotary Pump v. Vibratory Pump
« on: September 06, 2009, 08:44:49 AM »
I know I can find this information elsewhere with some searching, but because I enjoy the tone of discussions here, I thought I would try starting a conversation.  I have always had vibe pump espresso machines.  After looking at the Mini Vivaldi II, and appreciating its beautiful lines, I noticed that it has a vibe pump.  Now, I always thought that serious machines (i.e. >$1,000) would have a rotary pump.  What are the user-end differences between vibratory and rotary?

No differences really.

Both are capable of producing more pressure than required for making good espresso (9 bar), so both need a pressure regulator. Both will last a long time as long as they're not run dry or over heated.

The vibe pump is more compact than a motor/rotary pump combo, but it's also noisier. The vibe pump produces a pulsed stream of water, while the rotary pump output is continuous; which some consider best for making espresso with inducing channeling in the puck (not sure I buy this??).

A vibe pump can be replaced for ~$60 and a rotary pump can be rebuilt for the same amount.
