Roasting thermometer... Mine broke.
« on: July 07, 2010, 03:05:05 PM »
My Maverick thermometer poo-ed out on me. It doesn't recognize when the probe is plugged into the unit and when it does the temps read all over the board. Useless thing gave me about two months.

Should I just go with the SM one? http://www.sweetmarias.com/sweetmarias/coffee-roasters/roasting-supplies/digital-thermometer-with-thermocouple.html
Or is there a better one recommended?

Also, where would you place the wire to get the bean mass temp in a TO/SC?

Thanks,
- -Barrett

We should get Susan to chime in here, I think she just went through the thermometer shopping maze.  I know there's a few on Amazon that will reach high enough temps, but you'll have to wade through a few pages.  It will be cheaper than SM's too.

If you get one w/ the pointy probe, and you have some sort of spacer on the SC, you may want to adapt something like this bozo's setup. I was going to post an image or two, but thought the whole thing may spark some ideas.

Hah, Peter, I've definitely seen that Bozo's page. Crazy how such a guy could have so many good ideas.  :P
And, actually Susan was the one that recommended the Maverick to me. It was great while it lasted... but alas some things aren't meant to last. It would still be nice to hear from her. Susan?

Holy cow, bbq! Almost half the price! I should have guessed. :o

I used to have a thermometer with the wired thermocouple like that.  It was irksome to keep the exposed end in the bean mass.  If you use one like that it will be interesting to see how you work it out.

Where would one find the rigid type probe to do the Hottop, thru the bean chute cover?

I like these from Omega.com. I add a miniature plug to the end of the leads.

How long is the probe portion?

6 & 12" in stock - other lengths on request.

I use the exposed tip probes for roasting & grounded probes for PIDing espresso machines.

Say, Tex. This may be a silly question, but I look forward to an elusive answer from you.  ;D
I was going to get the K type, SS, and either grounded or exposed tip. haven't decided yet. So what diameter sheath should I get?

For a dry/air application I use the 1/8" exposed tip probe. Because the tip is exposed, you'll get faster and more accurate feedback. The 1/8" sheath will be more resistant to distortion in the Hottop - per Randy's design.

For wet/steam use, I use the 1/16" grounded tip, again for faster and more accurate feedback.

Thanks, Tex. I appreciate it. Though I use the SC/TO.
