OK, game on. Homepresso Domepod is on its way and we will have first shot at it to do a group test and a random drawing to see who keeps it.
Rules:
1) 1st ten PayPal payments of $12 and we will close it off. If more are interested, we will start a second unit commitment.
2) What is at stake? Handpresso Domepod (use your coffee, not pods).
3) You have it for one full weekend to play with and then post your experiences/reactions.
4) Mail it no later than Tuesday, priority mail to the next person on the list.
5) I will draw random number from here: http://random.org (http://random.org) with the honorable Peter 86th Street presiding over the draw. Winning number gets the Domepod to keep, sell, or auction for Coffee Kids.
Interested? Jump on. 1st ten and I will close the 1st one. Keep coming in with $12 payments and post. I will start a 2nd domepod order. I can order several but each unit is limited to 10 folks. If we have an insufficient number for a particular unit, I will refund monies for that unit.
Want to be among the honored 10?
You go on the list only when you have paid. First 10 8 payments are our “players.â€

Thank you for your purchase from Orphan Espresso!
Handpresso Domepod Portable Travel Espresso Maker
Should be on-hand Dec 11th or so. I am going to see if I can enlist the support of the Greater WIC'ers to give it a good test on Sat, Dec 12th. Mz Silvia will also be in peak form so we can drop shots till we drop.
Heh, heh, heh.
I also snagged a 58 dosing funnel. Very snazzy. The Czarina likes to throw out my clipped yogurt cups that I use to do the WDT. When she doesn't throw it out, I mash it in the "coffee drawer."

We have 8 entrants.
Choices are, in order of preference for me:
1) Extra chances to you. If that is your wish (don't feel obligated), Jim Spain, John and then others would have a chance to buy them, just in that those two gents spoke in turn.
2) Leave 2 more chances open during the next 2-3 months while this tool rotates 'roun' the country.
3) I will assume the cost and have 3 chances.
Your call gents. If Bill or Rasqual can come up on Dec 12th, I will pass it off. Let's shoot to have it in our hands for a weekend and then get if off to the next bloke by Monday.
Make sense? B|Java

If we do that can we just stick $3 in the box when forwarding?
I know sending cash is generally frowned upon but if we all paypal $3 I think papal is the one who makes out best on the additional transactions....just thinking out loud and will paypal on command if we do it that way. ;)

For me it's 80% about getting in on the fun for $12, 15% having a chance to win something in a small odds pool, and 5% about the presso.
However I am very curious to learn if we can make tasty drinks with it and the only way you could ever really know is to load it up and try it. I have serious doubts it can make legit "espresso" but I do expect/hope to make tasty coffee drinks with it after goofing around a bit.
Mainly it's just a pile of fun to do these types of things with other insane coffee junkies. ;D

Welcome. Comes nicely boxed.
Excellent directions/instructions. Very clear, precise English. Read through them, then pick up the unit, then read and walk thru it, then find your grinder.
-
Here is the arsenal. Kuri squash not included.
-
All laid out. Extra O ring and extra "portafilter."
-
Gauge, water dome and jalapen~o.
The 9 bars pressure is easily achieved with about 40 pumps. This instrument feels solid/significant (not cheap) to the touch. The pressure holds. I pumped it to the green line and then started reading and putzing. Got called away and when I returned 15 minutes later, the needle hadn't budged.
Boiled water (~1.7 oz) gets poured into that plastic dome. A valve is opened from this position and the water is forced south thru the filter and into the mug. I pre-heated the mug and plastic dome with boiled water.
-
Filter. An extra one is provided. No tamper. Hmmm...5-7 grams? How to tamp?
-
Time for jo.' Paradise has a very nice light espresso. Milk chocolates, cinnamon, light apricot <?> and faint wineyness. Love it.
http://www.paradiseroasters.com/ (http://www.paradiseroasters.com/)
-
I grind into a pitcher and then pour into the filter. Tamp away. Thumb tamp works, using left hand to make a C.
-
25 second, unweighed amount. Much too thin. Right time, wrong amount.
-
A little over 7 grams, 45 seconds extraction. Tamped too tightly. Initial crema was nice but got knocked down and faded as time extended.
Have some work to do on grind size, amt of coffee, tamping pressure, amt of water, and bars. Lots of variables that I need to dial in here.
Initial impressions? I believe this is a keeper. This is more than a toy. A ton of futzing to do on the 5 items above, but there is a good shot that will come out of here.
Time out for this evening. Time to cook some Mexican food.

Mr John F is next. FedEx will have the unit to you by Thurs.
I updated the 1st thread to reflect approximate weekends you should have the Handpresso at your place. Keep the unit moving, out by the following Monday. Remember that other gents are waiting, thanks. If something comes up and you need more time, please post to thread so others know of the delay.
Priority mail is $8.15 printed online. Get address of the gent who follows you. Suggest insurance ($2.25) unless you would like to foot the risk of $100 on your own.
Good potential with this unit if you tweak it. Pls post back successes and crashes.

My first 30 min. with the Handpresso.
I gave the instructions a quick read and after looking at the proportions of everything and the set up of the machine I pulled a straight shot with it right away (more on that in a bit).
I went with a concave spoon tamp.
-
I forgot to take a pic of the first shot but it looked the same as the one in my latte.
Thin crema that dissipates quickly but honestly it looked better than I thought it might...
-
I did some calculations and figured my custom Stray Clay cup should be about the right size for my plan. 8)
-
I need to do a lot more testing over the next 2 days before packing it up and sending it to Milo but my initial thoughts are that this little gizmo is interesting.
A year ago I thought it certainly made horrible coffee.
Now that I've had it I don't think that is the case at all.
I think great espresso is going to be asking more than you should from a hand held portable unit but for what it is and setting your expectations accordingly it might be alright. 8)
The limitation I'm first aware of (and what I'll be working on/around) is pictured below.. :-X
-
I went back in with an attempt to reduce shot volume to match the basket size....not too sure that was the right move.
I think I will experiment with grind and tamp some more....

Now I'm getting excited and eager to compare this to the Mypressi...
I've put a ton of coffee trough this thing already and know everything I can find with my time so later today I'm sending it your way.
I'll pass along my ideas but don't trust them...experiment away but I'll pass along for the rest of the crew for consideration.
Pre-heat. I fell into pouring boiling water into the reservoir to pre-heat and dump that into the shower screen before every shot.
Double basket - I found the best way to make a "normal" drink was to pre load and tamp both baskets before starting for the quick change double.
Quick shot - one of my favorite moves with this thing was to put .025oz milk in a 1.5oz shot glass and pull a .75oz shot over top. You can go from deciding to do it to being totally cleaned up with shot in belly in 8 min. "express coffee for you". ;)
I found the 1oz shots to be too thin and trended to shorter shots but maybe tamping/dosing could be played with more...it's just how it worked out for me.
Alright guys, I don't think it's going to replace the home machine anytime soon. I don't think it's going to pull really killer shots either, but it is a new toy to play with and all things considered it did more than I thought it might. ;)
-
OK Larry, You're turn......

We bought our original Handpresso about this time last year... I was disappointed that just a few months later they announced this new model. Oi.
We like it for the travel novelty. Some of our relatives do not even own basic coffee machines (and they wonder why they were disowned). Biggest draw back are those blasted ESE pods, which must be purchased online. Now this.... Do I cave and just buy another one? I never dreamed that it wouldn't be proprietary, since that's the profitable trend.
*bounces around* I want!
-
Do I cave and just buy another one?
I would not. :-\
If they come out with another version with a basket twice the size of the current one maybe..
But you already have the pod version so I'd probably say hand grinder and either Aeropress or cone would be a better option than having 2 handpresso units. My advise is resist the urge to get the second one...even a travel press might be a better idea.

Handpressi has landed, thanks John!
My first impression (without making any espresso yet) is it's small... don't know if that's good or bad.
The handpressi is much simpler design, fewer parts... that's a good thing.
Here are a few photos compared to a standard portafilter and the Mypressi. I'll be playing with these over the next 4 days... or so. Report to follow.
Mypressi is on the left, Brasilia Portafilter center and Handpressi on the right...
-
if any GCBC members in the Seattle area want to come over Thursday and play with these, send me a PM.. It would have to be before, say 2pm. I have a couple lbs of Espresso I roasted for testing these guys.
-
The handpressi is much simpler design, fewer parts... that's a good thing...
Maybe I misunderstand but I count a lot more dissembled parts with the Milopressi than I do with the Handpresso. Maybe you mean internal parts?

I think that is what I said... the handpressi is much simpler, which is a good thing. Less parts to loose, break, etc. The Mypressi has more parts, including 4 - o-rings. Simple is good in my book for a travel anything.

Oh, OK, the Handpresso has fewer parts than the MyPressi. Gotcha'.

-
Well I spent about an hour and a half with the handpresso... pulled about 12 shots with it. I also compared it to the Mypressi and my Brasilia. I pre-heated it each time with water from my hot-water wand on the Brasilia... easier than using a kettle and plenty of hot water at a constant temp.
I think I took a non-bias look at both the Handpresso and Mypressi
Here is the first round.
I first got the grind good for the Brasilia and pulled a shot on it.
I then prepped and pulled a shot with the Mypressi (about 3 minutes later)
I then prepped and pulled a shot the the Handpresso (about 3 minutes later)
then lined up all 3 shots and took this photo... so the Brasila shot is in the center (6 minutes old) the Mypressi in the left (3 minutes old)
and the Handpresso on the right about 10 seconds old..
As you can see Round 1 went to the Brasilia with the Mypressi a close second. The Mypressi had good rich dark crema, and the Handpresso did have crema, but pretty blonde.
Taste-wise the Mypressi and Brasila were very close. I think the grind was not quite right for the Mypressi and I thought that might be the case for the Handpresso.... more on that later.
I then adjusted the grind a little and pulled a shot with the Mypressi, and pulled a shot with the Handpresso at the same time.
the bottom photo is this scenario,... pretty good shot on the Mypressi.
-
Round 2 I also pulled a shot with the Brasilia and this photo adds the Brasilia. I wasn't at the machine and pressed a double shot, so it's the full one on the right
-
I then pulled another shot with the Mypressi adjusting the grind a little more. The grind was a little tight as it took about 45 seconds to flow... but still a good shot. the Mypressi seems pretty forgiving with the grind and tamp.
-
The Handpresso was my next and real quest... to pull a decent shot with it.
I adjusted the grind and tried different tamp methods to try and get a good shot... I went very very very fine.... it looked like the water blew around the coffee. So I went back to where I had the Brasilia the went a step at a time finer and courser.... Pulled about 8 shots.
this photo was the best one of all. Thick Crema, but pretty blonde.
I am now suspecting that the tamp is the key. I wish the Handpresso came with a tamper. I see that as a disadvantage.... I may make one for it today if I have time... a spoon produced the best tamp... so far
-
So far I'd say the Mypressi wins hands down. It's capable of pulling a shot comparable to a commercial machine. It has a 57mm basket that will hold 19 grams of espresso. The three disadvantages I see with the mypressi are:
1) lots of o-rings that you can loose..4 of them all different sizes.
2) run out of N20 and you can't make another shot.
3) the alignment marks for the water reservoir are difficult to see, they should have painted them white.
The advantages are:
1) Can pull a double shot with this.. no problem
2) Makes pretty good espesso
3) bottomless portafilter (by removing the spout)
4) all metal and heavy.. so it holds the heat well
5) pretty forgiving of the grind
6) comes with a tamper
The Handpresso is better than a Krups....
Advantages
1) small, simple and lightweight
2) don't need N20
3) Only takes about 25 pumps to get the pressure
Disadvantages
1) not very forgiving of grind
2) small basket
3) plastic basket (it think it would be better if it were all metal)
4) no tamper (I think making one would allow for more consistent tamp)
-
Excellent comparison. Well documented. Thanks for taking the time to write it up and provide photos.

Yes, that was superb. Thanks.

Well, I don't even pretend to be an espresso aficionado in the league of the three guys who preceded me. However, I thought I had better post my thoughts after a weekend with the Handpresso. I have only been on the espresso journey for about a year now so I don't know how valuable my input will be.
First of all, the equipment:
I thought it seemed very well built and should hold up to travel quite well. For the most part I think it seems pretty well thought out with a few oversights that have been mentioned before: 1) It's just too small. It doesn't seem like it would be much harder to make this into a double instead of single shot producer. I'm guessing the sustained water pressure would be the hang up here. 2) I don't know how long the baskets will last with that thin metal screen inserted in plastic. I second the motion for all metal baskets.
Next, the shots:
I actually only had time this weekend to put about fifteen shots through. However, I think that overall I was more impressed than I thought I was going to be. Granted, in my year of shot pulling, I have probably only experienced 10-15 of what I thought were really tasty shots. I didn't get any great shots with the handpresso, but I did have more drinkable shots than sink shots. It does seem a little picky with grind, but once dialed in, I thought it performed tolerably well. I was using a blend that I have been using on my Carezza that I think is pretty good. The shots on this thing weren't quite what I have been able to coax out of the Carezza. But given a little more time and tinkering, who knows? Overall, I thought it did quite well. If nothing else, I am a little tempted to try out a Mypressi after Milo's review.
Here are a few pics to avoid the "What, no pics?" police ;). Sorry, no see thru glasses or fancy espresso spoons (does a baby spoon work? :D):
-
The baby food spoon is the bomb!
I love that thing. ;D ;D

By appearance, I think you have managed some of the best shots to date out of this. Mr. Jim Spain, on your mark...

It appears that John F has the ability to create a good looking shot! My turn next. I believe she is on the way and then to Bill! Jim
-
Jim, most recent shots are Yorel's, not John F's.

Thanks guys!! I have to say that overall, I was impressed with the little guy! Seems to like a little finer grind than my Gaggia.
Photoshop. >:D
:laughing4: I wish!!

OOPS! Sorry John.... Credit to Yorel23. Sorry Roy.
ps, don't look for pics from me. Just commentary. Photo police will have a hayday with me!

So, what did you think Mr. Spain??

I am still waiting for Bro' Spain to post a pic.

Gentlemen!
You guys are putting me on the spot..... I'd thought maybe my exprience would slide by and no one would notice. Here's my story and I'm sticking to it.
My wife came home from work on Saturday and in the evening said, "By the way a package came for you yesterday, I forgot to bring it home yesterday and it's in the car!" I went out, opened the box, and then remembered what was coming my way. The domepod! I was finishing my sermon for Sunday and didn't even take it out of the box. Busy at the church ALL DAY Sunday and no domepod when I got home. Emailed Bill and got his mailing address and had hoped to try it Monday morning before shipping to Bill on Monday afternoon. Well, I spent Monday morning with Patty in the emergency room!
Domepod sent to Bill on Monday at 12:30pm.... That was my experience! I'm sad :( Jim

Thanks guys but I already told Patty that I was going to win the drawing and I'd have forever to use it! If you send it my way again wait until everyone else has their shot first!
BTW, Patty is doing better. Thanks to those who have emailed me to ask "how is she doing?" She is recouping at home and will be back to work tomorrow! Jim

Winner...
I will use our Chicago gathering (Jan 23rd) as an opportunity for someone with no skin in the game to randomly pick a card and we can see who keeps the unit after Rasqual pinches out a shot or two with it.
See 1st post for your lucky number.

No man, you misunderstood. I wasn't playing grammar cop; Milo has been busting me for buying commercial roasts. You 'out-ed' yourself by saying you bought at Dunn Bros.

Ok... I finally found enough clean counter top that Denise would let me play with the camera... (actually she took the pictures ::)
I don;t know espresso but I had some taste coffee.. surprisingly good for a little hand held gadget... not worth the $$ to me but does a pretty good job for what it is... I didn't have the ability to very the grind and my results would be based on head knowledge not experience... it was a fun opportunity to try something out...
pictures can be seen by all at this facebook link (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2027234&id=1438642162&l=a900d13a4b) (I hope)

Denise caught the steam coming off it. Either that or you are back on the Marbies.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a winner.
Mr. Milowebailey is the proud owner of the Handpresso Domepod, chosen at 5:23pm, CST. Whomever has it, kindly send it Seattle way if all have had a turn. I am unsure if Rasqual had his dibs and then there was Jimmy Spain's second try. Sing out please.
