The Le Nez Du Café collection includes the most typical aromas found in the world's top coffees. Aromas and aroma identification are essential to the quality of a product; it is important to be able to recognize them in order to master tasting.
-- blurb on Espresso Parts website
Espresso Parts has Le Nez Du Cafe complete kits of 36 smells for $299, which seems a little steep for a roadshow of reasonable size. They also have the replacement bottles sold individually for $8 each. Looking at the list of schmells leads me to believe that we might be able to make an interesting subset of 10 or so that would make a cool roadshow.
So here is my proposed schmell list, open to comment:
- #3, Garden Peas
- #6, Cedar
- #9, Coriander Seed
- #11, Tea-rose/ Redcurrant Jelly
- #14, Blackcurrant-like
- #17, Apple
- #19, Honeyed
- #21, Basmati Rice
- #23, Malt
- #29, Roasted Hazelnuts
the entire list of 36 samples is here:

Feel free to comment on the choices or suggest alternates.

The cost ended up as $80 divided by the 7 of us for $11.43 each. Please include your member name and the word roadshow somewhere in the paypal title. I will take care of the paypal fees, or you can select gift payment to save me the 34 cents.
Good luck smellers!

Yes, please! Great idea. Count me in. Given my recent luck in road shows, I'd like to bow out of the lottery this time and increase another's odds of winning. I'll take a look at the schmell list later.

I can contribute eau de kitty litter for your schmelly kit?

You will have to talk to the french guy about #37, Texan sanitary supplies :)

Chris, you read my mind. The last time that site offered free shipping I picked up coffee blossom (http://www.home-barista.com/coffees/le-nez-du-cafe-t14618-10.html#p261309), which I found smells very much like gardenia. This time it's going to be coffee pulp. Any other uncommon scents I should consider?
-
Are you still doing the road show?
-
What the heck, I'm ready to order these roadshow or not.
Sign up for the schmelly!
-
I'm still up for it (thanks).
-
Me too!
-
Related: I went ahead and placed my own order for "coffee pulp" because, well, who knows how much longer I'll have internet access here in Baltimore?! The scents ecc has chosen for the road show don't overlap with what I've already got and so sound good to me.
Also: wonder if there's a way to share out the essential oils such that everyone gets a small portion (drops)? Not sure this would be practical...

I'm in!
-
Already ordered, right? Idea: let's do this with 6. Personally, I don't mind paying a little more.
-
That would work, though I doubt I'll need more than a few days to smell each of these. 8)
-
I doubt they are using priority mail with the free shipping, but I did get a shipping notice.
I wouldn't mind doing the roadshow sans fees or lottery since I would have bought them anyway, or just redoing the division to 13.33 ea. Either way, smell and tell is on like donkey kong!!!
-
Ok, espresso parts has simplified things a bit... 2 are on backorder!
-
OK, I just washed my hands 11 times, and I can't find the cat. These things are very cool. Need two more to play. You know you want to.
-
Which 2 schmells are missing?
-
#23 malt and #11 tea rose/redcurrant jelly. I will put a call into them tomorrow to see when these are expected to ship.
-
In.

Update: my eau de coffee pulp arrived yesterday. It smells like musty strawberry or something--hard to place, and not entirely pleasant. I'd be happy to put a few drops of it into a little vial and add it to this road show when it's time for me to send the package off.
-
Just talked to Espresso Parts, they very pleasantly agreed to substitute #2 Potato, and #16 Apricot for our backordered #11 Tea-rose/redcurrant and #23 Malt. Great vendor!!
I handed the kit to sub_g to mess up his nasal passages while we wait for the replacements.
I still regret smelling #6 cedar.
-
OK, I just got back into town and found the two replacement vials. I have PM'd the official club roadshow chooser for a number...

I have the sealed envelope from the jspain household, now is the time to pay the piper!

Good tip I learned while on the road -- to break the fragrance or aroma of a previous cup/nez du cafe, bend your elbow and sniff of you elbow pinch. It clears the previous aroma.

That trick really works. While B|GassyChassis and I were rooming together in Portland, the old goat was repeatin' like a howitzer. I spent most of nights sleeping with my schnoz in my elbow. One of his more seismic blasts actually stopped to room clock at 4:12pm. It stayed like that all the way to check-out time.
-
Ha! Problem: isn't that bend the one you're supposed to sneeze into? 8)

This story is true; only the names have been changed to protect the guilty. Clown woke me up with a howitzer volley at 4.12a.

Those of us who don't win might be interested in the deal that cooking.com has going on the 6-aroma "Temptation" kit:
http://www.cooking.com/6-pc-coffee-aromas-temptation-kit_191882_11/ (http://www.cooking.com/6-pc-coffee-aromas-temptation-kit_191882_11/)
Aroma List [NB: there's some overlap with the road show list]
1) Garden peas
2) Blackcurrant-like
3) Butter
4) Caramel
5) Roasted peanuts
6) Roasted coffee
With shipping to me it would be $24 and change, which is much cheaper than Espresso Parts is charging. This site often has 20% off coupons available on clearance items, too (though not currently as far as I can tell).

Just sent payment. Sorry for the delay. I hadn't check this thread in a few days.

Payment sent, sorry for the delay.

Ok, I have the envelope, and the winner is ....
#4 the yakster!
Congratulations Chris, you will be moved to the last in line. When this all done, any of us should be able to find your house/office without a GPS.
sub_g has been destroying his sinuses this week, so after the weekend I will start bugging him to return it.
jbviau, if you would please PM me your shipping address, I will let you know (so you can warn your mailman!) when I send it.
Thanks again everyone for your participation, and your patience, this one took a little bit of extra concentration from us all...
-
Congrats! Yeah, saw those. I want to get Trish's take in particular on what she thinks "coffee pulp" smells like.

Sent that address last week. Ready to get my sniff on!
Related: the Temptation kit I ordered arrived today smelling like garden peas despite the fact that the pea vial had no obvious leaks. According to the manual, this vegetal earth scent (2-Methoxy-3-isopropylpyrazine) is so strong that a few drops could be detected in an Olympic-sized swimming pool. I believe it! ;)
-
Sorry Josh, It will be in the mail Monday. We have been having too much fun with it, and got the cooking.com kit yesterday. I was thinking of using the case to ship our 10 schmells in, and perhaps make a copy of the booklet that comes with. Instead I will just stick it in with the other schmells and let everyone sort it out for themselves.
The temptation kit renumbers the smells 1-6 and overlaps with 2 on our roadshow. The garden peas, and the blackcurrant-like. The butter and roasted peanuts were interesting, the coffee pulp less so. The booklet was neat, and the book cover box looks good (at least as good as it can look double sealed in plastic baggies)
It will likely show up smelling badly of garden peas, as does my car from storing the roadshow kit. Surprisingly there were a few at work that couldn't smell it, others that were obviously damaged by it. The rest weren't as pervasive, the apple was one of my favorites - the smell was elusive until you put a label on it, then all you could picture was a golden delicious.
Smell on!
-
Cool! Oh, hey, no rush. I like your baggie idea.
-
On its way to Baltimore along with a batch of padded envelopes from the ninety plus distro.
(Don't worry, I put it in a different mail bin from the rest)
-
Nice! Thanks.
Back to the green peas, I thought I caught a whiff of it/them in some spent grounds the other day. That aroma does have a way of getting into your head!
-
Needed equipment for the Le Nez du Cafe:
-
^^^ Wow, that's quite the nose!
Schmells are in the house as of this afternoon (thanks). Time to sniff...
-
Update: I've messaged the next member in line, headchange4u; will be ready to send these off on Mon. Sniffing notes forthcoming... ::)
-
Woot woot.
-
The smelly box goes out tomorrow. I'm adding two scents, #12 (coffee blossom) and #13 (coffee pulp)--siphoned a few drops of each from the official aromas in my stash and added them to some tiny vials I found online. The pic below should help identify them. Enjoy!
p.s. Just noticed that all replacement aromas are listed as out of stock at Espresso Parts until Feb. 2013: http://www.espressoparts.com/LENEZDUCAFE_RP (http://www.espressoparts.com/LENEZDUCAFE_RP)
-
I did have some fun with them. Will write it up today or tomorrow and post here!

How goes the schmelling?

It's just so quiet, I expected more complaining!
-
Roadshow arrived today. The box smells like garden soil with faint whiffs of pine. If the schmells are anything like the box this will be interesting to work through.
-
Okay, Worked through the whole set twice. Just wrote down all the schmell's without the numbers and placed the bottle on the smell. It's actual pretty easy to not see the numbers. And the overlapping numbers are different colors so sorting them out afterwards is easy. Besides the 6 bottles in the Le Nez Du Cafe set this was my first time through the set.
-
Finally getting the chance to post my comments on this road show offering. I have to admit that this was probably one of the most interesting road shows I have participated in. Myself and a couple of coworkers went through the vials and tested each scent. I really like the coffee blossom. There were also some pretty funky samples in the mix. I did find it odd the the green pea to be the most intense and lingering of all the smells. I never knew peas were so ... um ... fragrant.
-
I noticed today that I can no longer smell garden pea fragrance in my car! (the magic ratio seems to be 7 car fresheners)
-
It's an amazingly persistent scent, right? I'd been keeping the pea vial from my Temptation kit inside a plastic bag in the original box, which itself was sealed inside a plastic Tupperware (follow that?). However, I was still catching a whiff from time to time, so yesterday I finally isolated the damn thing inside a VacuVin tub. Sheesh!
-
Persistent? I walked toward a box on the kitchen table and I could smell green stuff... Looked at the address and understood just what you all were talking about. The box was wrapped in miles of wrapping tape, sealed tight and you could see this odor sneaking out from the cracks.
My husband is not a happy camper. My dogs won't talk to me. :o Wow.
-
Princess and the pea?
8)
-
Lol!
The princess would be the young 7-year-old who stayed with us last night. I was really surprised to see that a single smell, chemically isolated, would be interpreted three different ways. And also that an ubiquitous smell like butter would not be recognized by anyone but me. Really neat roadshow.
-
The schmell has landed at it's final destination. I'm too tired to do much but say that I'm smelling a lot of garden peas.
I nominate you KING of the RoadShows 8)
-
Thanks for the link, and the update Yakster!
I know that it's crazy, but I swear that every once in a while, when the wind is from the west, I catch a trace of that green pea smell...
-
^^^ Thanks! Very cool. It took me a min. to figure this out, but I was able to download the document for free after uploading a random .pdf file (the manual for my son's bike was handy). Will take a look later.
