Let's do it. Probably will be released in Jan-Mar.
I estimate $125 (hand reaches into air) with shipping to me ($12.50 each).
(Edit 2/8/12 - Grinder came in at $165. $18.49 each, when shipping and PayPal were included)
Need 10 to play. No money now. If the grinder runs higher, you may back out and I will find a replacement. Once we are all registered and paid, I will ask Ms JSpain to pick us a number. That number will be our winner and gets it last so there isn't a need to ship it on.

Doug's prototype is on the bench (rear, extreme right). 38mm burrs. I think Doug is trying to build a small hand grinder that gives more consistency for pourovers and press grind. Love the paragraph off H-B; Doug must be working his way thru some of Paul's Epistles:
" With the holiday freight slowdowns (it turns out that about the only 7mm partially threaded short bolt, to hold the burr on the axle is for German split rim wheels and that dimple centered high chrome bolt will likely be a dazzler....and it won't even be seen...right now the burr is held with a hex bolt with china markings which although not cheap in that oddball size, we did not like it) and Ditting being closed until Jan 4 (then we get the new burrs for our Ditting batch grinder shipped as a reference for the coarse grinding studies), we likely won't have all the pieces in place until mid or late January, but so far it seems like it will be a nice addition to the family." Phew.

Don't lose faith. ETA is March, one month off. From the high hills of Idaho:
" Yet another LIDO reference! Geez, I don't want to be a tease so have not said much....we sat down last Saturday with a goal to build 25 grinders, having all the parts prepared and ready, and we managed to build exactly ZERO. We had decided to use nyloc nuts on the assembly bolts and those buggers gave us fits, so we are getting regular nuts for our next go round and have assembly jigs made for our next production run. And then we decided that our packaging concept was important (to us) which got us involved in Chinese New Year slowdown (American company with China manufacture...branded neoprene travel bags actually). The grind analysis is ready for this weekend but I must say that the LIDO is getting a good prototype workout here and even though we are espresso-centric coffee drinkers, the press grind on this thing is making us actually look forward to that big leisurely cup of press after dinner...very nice extractions in the coarse ranges.ETA March..."

I don't read his post that way. I believe he is referring to the traveling bags which he ordered in China. There were problems with the manufacturer. I think Doug's reference is "165 American," which suggests he turned to a US manufacturer. I could be wrong, but I don't think he would be that casual with reference point for his pricing:
Should the price exceed $125 by a wide margin, I will quickly survey those subscribing, to ensure comfort with the price point.

I have a feeling that this is going to be a winner and will make it onto my wish list at some point.
I have the same sense. The QC that Doug/Barb are running (and the honest shakeout they will provide) bode well. While I didn't care for the Phoros, the quality of the materials was clear. I think it will be a fine piece. Getting my hands will help with a decision.

Hope so! When I first heard about this grinder, I was on the verge of buying either an OE-PFP or a vintage Peugeot to take care of my coarse grinding whenever I wasn't inclined or able to use the Preciso. The Lido seems more solid than the first two I mentioned for sure and might compare favorably to the last as well (remains to be seen).

We're getting closer. Doug, on H-B:
" . . . we are happy with everything but the delay on those padded bags but not much longer now. During this hiatus we have basically worked out the final assembly (for us) and find that it will be manageable for us to hand build them without being buried in the project any more than we already are. The alignment of the burr is permanent and need not ever be changed, but there is a simple build instruction to break it all down and put it back together again (but not any real reason to do this). We have come up with some simple tools to include to try and make sure that this one is user friendly right out of the box and are finishing up the instruction manual, which will be fairly minimal as the use of the LIDO will be pretty obvious. . . "

There's a drive bit available for the Lido on the OE web site in case you're grinding for a pot. Similar to what I came up with for the Pharos, but simpler. Mine was a coupling nut with a hex head cap bolt, which had three parts, the OE version has only two parts and should work on the Pharos as well.

Accessories. Looks like a solder brush and a rubber strip. The strip really comes in handy. Use it as a landing/grounding strip, lean the grinder at a 70* angle and crank.

We landed Lido #002. It is etched onto a strut in the base of the unit, though not readable here.
While we are here, let's describe the adjustment. The brass washer is the "0" point. I have this backed off a full two counterclockwise rotations (360 x 2) to achieve a grind that mimics my pourover grind.

Initial impressions:
- Hefty but not bulky. Ideal size for my hands. 2.26 lbs.
- Much smoother turning/grinding than the Pharos (of which I wasn't a fan).
- So much more substantial feel to it than the Hario Skerton (at 4x's the cost, granted)
- Very well crafted. All the parts are machined well and the grinder is a "tight" package
I ran several 10 gram amounts through the grinder and enjoyed using it (in contrast to my Pharos experience). Just trying to get any machining oils out of the machine today, get a feel for it. Initial impressions is that it throws less fines than does the Hario.
I will use it for a variety of grinds this week, espresso to press pot and provide some feedback. I think OE has a winner here.

Used the Lido to grind 39g for the Yama 5-cup. Plenty of room in the Lido for the amount of coffee. I will do the 68 grams (8 cup) in it this weekend.
Time needed for 39g? Two minutes of grinding.
Yield? 39 grams, no retention.
Grounds? I use a "pourover minus" grind for vacpot (tighten ~ 10%). Grounds were very similar to those ground from my Macap 4 (58mm). Some fines but not excessive.
Cup? Excellent. No over-extraction taste at all.
Sludge in cup? None.
Sludge in pot? 1/2 a dime's worth, identical to Macap 4.
Thoughts?
1. I thought it would take longer to grind 40gr.
2. Very smooth grind, unlike the Pharos which works in fits and jerks for me. I have hand arthritis in the winter and this grinding action presented no challenge.
3. Easy to see progress.
4. Rubber strip - don't misplace it. It serves as a non-slip surface on the granite countertop for grinding. (I am going to bring home a mouse pad from work to see if that won't serve the same purpose).
5. Some grinds (mainly chaff) retention on base due to static. I used my counter brush to sweep them off.
6. I will try this again tomorrow when the humidifier is refilled and see if it impacts the retention.

Pepper won't be bad it's the Wisconsin mochahazelnutvanillacherrymintalafroufrou blend thats hard to get out. The pepper just adds a little zip to your cuppa

I need to get this in the post to Ray this morning. Sorry for taking an extra week but I was out of town in Michigan with a funeral. I am unable to take the handle off and will leave that to craftsman Ray. Only hand tightened but she is on there. I didn't want to mar the shaft in an effort to get the handle off.
More observations:
Upper chamber will hold about 70 grams.
1. Much less static cling with the furnace off. Still some minimal retained in the upper chamber (chaff from the coffee) and grounds in the lower. Negligible and not an issue.
2. Now and then, the coffee needs to be shaken in the chamber for continued flow. Not a big deal.
3. Upper chamber needs to rest on its side after you have unscrewed the ground coffee chamber.
4. The adjustment is a multi-finger operation. You need to hold in place the black arrowed grind level indicator. Then, unscrew the wing nut that is the ultimate lock on grind level. Take your time. Very straight forward. Read the instruction sheet, RTFM.
Final thoughts
1. Grinder is superb quality.
2. Grinder throws a few fines, comparable to my 58mm Macap 4, at the press pot level.
3. If I were in the market for a hand grinder, I would grab this in a second as a life time investment.
4. Minor, occasional popcorning of splits flying out the top.
What needs to be done yet on our review?
1. Someone compare it to the Kyocera and Hario hand grinders; the Zass and Pe'de as well.
2. Someone go after an espresso grind. I am just out of time.
Suggested settings for a beginning point -- these worked well for me:
1. 1.5-1.75 for a pourover
2. 2.25 for press pot.
I returned it to zero. Let's do that so all have the same starting point.

Arrived today, took it for a spin with some Lionsgate natural at 1 1/4 turns from 0 for a Areopress cup,felt about right on the plunge. I will get the Hario out of the RV tomorrow and play some more.
So far it's a KEEPER.
To get the handle off I just pinched the shaft with my fingers a little and applied the Righty Tighty Lefty Loosy Theory . Came right off ;)

Remember to always use the left hand rule for electron flow and the right hand rule for hole flow and you'll be fine.

I had to use a soft cloth and vice grips to remove the handle before shipping to Yakster, I think the problem is the handle is aluminum, the threads in it are very rough feeling as you assemble it, also it needs a spacer to tighten up against instead of just bottoming out on the threads (about a 1/16" gap when tight).
Must have worked loose in shipping it to me Dave, no way other than tools to get it off. Still a KEEPER

Chris, thanks for the review. I also use a Kyocera CM-45 when I travel, so the comparison was especially helpful. Vario is my home espresso grinder, so I am looking forward to your next review as well. I think it getting harder to resist buying the Lido.

This is good news. It suggests that the LIDO can manage espresso. Thanks Chris.
Having used the LIDO, I would think it would be difficult to make micro changes on it as you could with a stepless. My guess (and that is all it is) is that incremental changes would be more similar to using my stepped Macap. I am really impressed with the LIDO for those that want a lifetime hand grinder. While pricey, it is a good value if you are in this for the long-term.

I can attest, the dosing funnel is great and weighs an even 10 grams so you don't have to re-tare. I just had the Rwanda this evening and it really is a great shot after 4 days rest. I have an issue where I wait too long because i like to savor it and once it cools the shot tastes too bright:(

...I would want a knurled nut on the shaft to make removing the handle easier (though I really just have been leaving the handle on) and I would also now want a 53 mm OE dosing funnel or yogurt container to make it easier to dose the coffee from the jar into the basket without making a mess.
The OE dosing funnel is indispensable for me, using a doserless Macap. Perfect product, coupled with a dissecting needle.

I got my Lido yesterday. I am still getting it dialed into where I like for use in the Technivorm. It really is frustrating the handle can't be adjusted more easily. I decided to try a bit of teflon tape to see if it would work itself into the touch cut threads of the handle. It seems to work so far and I can unthread it by hand without tools. I will have to keep checking it and see if the solution holds up.
Mine had a bit of burr rub so I may attempt to re align it once I have a free moment.

I've used the Lido 3 days at work for pourovers and comparing it to the Pharos, my Trosser hand grinder, my grindripper and my hario I have to say the Lido rules.
1) It grinds very consistently
2) It grinds fast
3) easy to clean
4) Easy to hold onto

I really liked the Lido, especially compared to the Pharos. The Lido seemed to address all the shortcomings for the other grinder. It was easy to grip, easy to adjust, and easy to get the grounds out of the unit.
Build quality was top notch, but that is to be expected from OE products. The grind quality was superb. I think my biggest complaint is that the grinder is still a bit bulky. This wouldn't matter is it was going to be a strictly a home grinder, but I would not want to travel with the thing.
Overall? 2 big thumbs up. I'll probably pick one up at some point. Kudos Orphan Espresso

Whee! I wonder if I'll have it when my Brother-in-law is here from Germany? We recently visited them over there and were stuck with a whirlybird and some (he got for free) drip machine that frequently deposited the brew onto the counter.
Thinking of gifting them a technivorm for xmas; one interesting thing is the technivorms are cheaper over there ~$250 equivalent or so.

My final thoughts on it...
I like it!
It was by far the best crank-o-matic I've ever used. I know it's reported to be espresso capable but my feeling while using it and looking at the grind was just to stick with pour over and aero press.
I can see using this grinder in many situations. For a single cup it's sort of fun to use even.
I thought the way you pour the beans in was kind of weird, Removing the handle is tougher than it could be because the act if grinding makes it tighten down more, and it does blow dust around when you take the baby food jar ;D off of it.
But overall I like it and if I ever have a need for one I would not hesitate to get one. It's got a super small footprint on the counter and looks nifty in the wine Koozie. 8)

It got here on Wednesday but I didn't open the box until today. Darn life getting in the way :) I haven't done much more than grind a few beans to see what it did. I was pleasantly surprised at how easily it is to find compared to other hand grinders I own. But, my main reason for a hand grinder is for travel and this thing is really too big to pack along with me.
Jason, when is your BIL in town? I can get it shipped quickly if you need it soon.

Thanks Ron for the offer; tres cool. We actually had, this past Sun and Mon, a whirlwind brief meetup in Stowe, VT for some hiking and bouldering around the notch. We didn't even bring coffee along so got to experience the Green Mountain signature blend. It was actually not too bad considering pre-ground a $9/12oz. I will enjoy the Lido whenever it gets here so no reason to hurry at all.
He relayed that his coffee maker once again made the coffee onto the counter since we left Germany but "it was free so not complaining." I think I will definitely gift a TV this next holiday. He and my Sister are loved :)

I chased a LIDO on CoffeeGeek yesterday. Guy wanted $120 or best offer. It went above list. Data point.

List was $120. I do not know sale price other than the seller sent me an email with "thanks, went above what I had it listed for."

I have. It was two days between order date and ship date. This was in mid-June and was ordered for a friend who just took the plunge into the rabbit hole. After seeing his and playing with it, I had to have my own. I bought the LIDO on CG in early July for $130 shipped. I wouldn't exactly say it went for more than list since the additional $10 was to cover shipping which was how it was advertised. I'm sure glad I got it, a real pleasure to use. Sorry for snatching it away B|Java, I had to jump on it. ;)

The LIDO has arrived at its final destination along with a few bonus bags of home-roasted goodness from Jason. Thanks to all of you, and especially to BoldJava for organizing this road show! I truly appreciate the opportunity to participate. Can't say I ever expected to win!
I spent some time tonight getting to know LIDO #002. Ground some new beans for a Trifecta cup and then partially disassembled the grinder for cleaning, etc. It's in good shape but does need a little TLC. There's a hairline crack in the jar lid, and the handle is bent. Both of these items will be replaced eventually. Also, the upper portion of the burr shaft (just under where the handle attaches) has acquired some "character" due to what I assume was the use of pliers. Doesn't bug me whatsoever in terms of appearance, but the fit between shaft and bearings is so tight that the few scratches there are make it very difficult to remove the burr assembly. I managed to get it out nonetheless. A little buffing of the shaft will probably be in order to make future deep cleanings easier.
So, just curious: how many of you now own or feel certain you'd like to own a LIDO? The grinder seems to have made a good impression overall.

^^^ Update: I went ahead and sent the LIDO back to OE for a tune-up. They received it last Thurs., did their magic, and shipped the grinder out the next day! Just got it back, in fact, along with the note shown below. I'm astonished by both the speed of this process and the fact that they didn't charge for me their labor or for return shipping. This level of support is impressive, and I thought I should mention it here in case it matters to anyone who might be considering a LIDO down the line.
By the way, only the jar lid was replaced. Doug straightened the handle and smoothed and polished the axle, so those parts are still (and will remain) original.
In a separate note, Barb told me that Doug also tweaked the alignment a bit. He's apparently learned a few tricks for unlocking better espresso grinding performance without sacrificing quality at the coarse end of the range. I haven't tested these claims out yet.

Works great. Interestingly, it grinds more finely on any given setting than it used to. Another LIDO owner on HB who sent his own grinder back to OE for a tune-up recently has experienced the same thing, i.e. what was once 1.5 turns CCW from zero is now 1.75+ turns. No big deal--just have to get everything dialed in again.

Sounds like a great conclusion to the road show. I think I will certainly pick one up at some point in the future when I get a little more settled in here on the left coast. My clothes are still on the floor though I do have a bed :)
