I always remove the tstat and timers, and split the fan and element circuit; so get the cheapest they have.

Its funny how buying parts work.

I priced it just with the top $68.00 shipped.

I priced the complete unit from Amazon shipped for $80.00

Not really worth the price difference.

Maybe - but if you buy just the top, there'll be less junk in your local landfill. :-\

I have heard of troubles with the digital unit and heat. I have the  2000 with the dials. It works great, and it's cheaper.

Ditto that; even if the digital models were equally reliable, who wants to hold down an up or down button for half a year when you can simply turn a dial connected to the t-stat?

Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying.

I think you were implying that the dial is quicker than holding the down or up button for a long while until the unit responded to you.

I originally thought that you had a mod in mind to the t-stat.

Thinking out loud here ... the Sunpentown is 1300 watts, and the Stir Crazy is 1000 watts ... you obviously have to use different electrical lines to operate these two devices?

My understanding is that most people disconnect the heat in the StirCrazy.

Hmm ... that would make sense.

That way you still have the steel turning rod going which would probably take very little energy to operate while the Sunpentown would require the bulk of it at 1300 watts.

Instead of buying a new Sunpentown, I bought a very old (but like new) 1470 watt Galloping Gourmet Convection off ebay for about $50 (lucked into a local pickup).  I rewired to have separate cords for the heater (which gets controlled via my Arduino and an SSR) and for the fan.  I've never done a side-by-side comparison between a Sunpentown and a GG, but the GG is very heavy duty and, I believe, higher power.
