Exotic Wood Tamper Handles and Such..
« on: August 20, 2012, 10:11:39 PM »
Hello,
I'm going to be making an exotic wood handle for my new tamper base..
I'm a metal working expert for the last 30+ years, wood is a hobby of mine..

I thought I'd ask if anyone wants any custom parts while I am in the groove..
I have about 150 sq ft of 1 1/2" thick African Rose Wood (Babinga) and some blocks of super exotics like Thuya and Aboyna Burl and a dozen others turning blocks like Pink Ivory, Bocote, Cocobolo and several others I can't remember..

I haven't feeling that great the last year due to a back injury and several other issues but you you got the time I have the tools..

I just received my 58mm  Espresso Parts base $29 but now want a Reg Barber 58.8mm base $41 to fit the basket perfectly..  I'll post the 58mm for sale when I upgrade but if someone is serious I can order your base from RB to save you on shipping when I order mine..

I had read an old post about someone making so parts like this before for razor and espresso machine handles.
My model will be the shape of a custom Espresso Parts Tamper, its a little more curve that the RB. No Lazar Engraving Included. Brass collar a little extra.

I am interested.  Is this 58.8 base curved?
Are you planning to expand on portafilter handles, and the rest...
Thanks,
Miroslav

I have been wanting a nice tamping stand that fits my La Spaziale single, double and bottomless portafilters.

Might be expensive though:(

This may be a weird request, and I'm not even sure your exotic woods would be suitable for what I'm wanting, but what about a nice stir paddle for mixing grounds in vac pots, Clever, French Press, etc.

I wouldn't use exotic woods in contact with foods, like a cutting board or to let steep in boiling water,
unless you are sure no toxic stuff can leach from them,

maybe olive wood?

Good point. I guess I could research the woods, if this was a viable project. I would want the wood unfinished so the coffee could naturally stain the wood over time.

Good point shootersm.  I never thought of that.  It's good to have professionals around here.

A family member is a custom wood carver in New Orleans and has long studied wood species for use in food preparation. He just emailed me that few woods are toxic - oleander seems to be the worst offender. Seems a family in NO was poisoned when using oleander branches as kebab skewers?

He says a more common problem is resins leeching into food; that some common wood like oak imparts a very pronounced taste of tannin.

He gave me two older references about food safety & wood:

I ordered a Tiamo bamboo stir stick from OrphanEspresso for $1.50, but usually use the plastic Yama one.

I use a bamboo chop stick - grandma said you shouldn't disturb the coffee too much.

But wouldn't you be disturbing the coffee when you put it in your mouth and down your throat?
