I've got a couple of those bamboo paddles. That's kinda what I was wanting in an exotic wood.

This may be a weird request, and I'm not even sure your exotic woods would be suitable for what I'm wanting, but what about a nice stir paddle for mixing grounds in vac pots, Clever, French Press, etc.

I could use black plastic for paddle and have a wooden handle with a stainless or brass round stock mid-section.. Easy way would be to find a paddle and add wooden handle ..

I ordered a Tiamo bamboo stir stick from OrphanEspresso for $1.50, but usually use the plastic Yama one.

I use a bamboo chop stick - grandma said you shouldn't disturb the coffee too much.

But wouldn't you be disturbing the coffee when you put it in your mouth and down your throat?

SYP,
If you can post an image of what your thinking about I can make a sketch and price..

Like this

I'll sketch something up that maybe has a glue up with two contrasting woods so it has more interesting appearance..

I want to add if you need a tamper smaller than 58mm I'm your man..
My baskets are 58.8mm for the most part and I now have two 58mm bases and have lans to buy the 58.8mm

I can cut down the two bases I have to any size smaller got the $30 I paid for these bases
One has a black handle the other is a Euro Curve 1/8" Convex just base..

A point to consider when buying tampers: filters taper and you need to measure the diameter where you'll be tamping. For 58mm filters this is ~1/4" below the top edge.

Tex I'm measuring about 3/8" maybe more..
I just bought some new baskets from Espresso Parts and bought a new Tamper Base.
The baskets (there brand) are almost 59mm
I wish the tamper was a little bigger, it 58mm on the button and I tired of north, south, east and west tamp

Mine fit pretty tight. I had them made at Coffee Complements.

I have a lathe in the garage so I can always make it smaller if needed :)

Not to threadjack, but some wiggle room with a tamper is allowable, yes?  They say it doesn't have to be an exact/tight fit.  How much wiggle room would be the question.

I had mine made by Coffee Complements with <.5 mm clearance on each side. I know folks with smallish tampers that use a NSEW tamp, but that's introducing another variable into the process, and I like making variables into constants when possible.

I also had flat & convex replacement heads made to the same specs for my auto tamper, again by Coffee Complements.

I'm think 1/64" is good .015 a 1/2 MM is about .020
My tamper is almost a full mm smaller..

Here is a shot of the 1mm difference.

Has anyone used these Chamfered Bases?
Also what about the Rippled ?

I flip-flop between the convex & flat base for my auto tamper. I gave away the ripple-base tamper, as it seemed pointless to induce an uneven surface and then dump in high pressure water, expecting the puck to not break up.

I can't tell the difference between a puck compressed with flat tamper or the convex?

Thanks Tex,

SYP,

here is a Sketch of the tamper base
I have seen a few like this one and this one is not locked in stone as far as design.
I'm working on some way to add some interest to the cylinder shape of the PF holder..
The flat base will have a large chamfer running around the top it with a counter bore to store the tamper..

If you can live with African Rosewood I'm thinking $60
If you want something more exotic I have to look at what woods I have for the larger base part..

I can mail you a portafilter to play with along with a basket. I am not sure how the portafilter will be held in place. The handle weight may keep it from sitting flat without assistance. I bet it would be worth experimenting with some cheap pine to get an idea what would work best. I really should setup my wood lathe!

African Rosewood would look great. $60 seems quite fair.

Thanks!
