Doreen has an Aeropress coffee at home before she goes to work, or she brews it directly into a travel mug and drinks it on the way to work. When it comes time for her second cup she suffers the local retail coffee, or worse yet the office coffee.
I just laugh.
With warmer temps and no snow she's about to start riding to work. This evening she got talking about taking the Aeropress to work and leaving it there so she can brew her first cup of coffee there. Sounds good. Then the pause... 'and I was thinking of grinding the coffee before I leave the house and just putting it in a little baggie.'
Uhmmm, no.
So what's a quiet and reasonably priced grinder that produces decent results. She doesn't have the time for a hand grinder so that's out. No whirly birds. Maybe something from the Baratza lineup?

I loves me my Baratza. If you have time to watch their site for a refurb, it's a deal that's hard to beat.
EricBNC had good things to say about the Krups conical.

Wilco.

Wilco.
Tango. Foxtrot. A fine Lagunitas shared w/ Jeffo last Friday. Could become my go-to brew if I can find it in six'ers.
-
I'll trade you a Lagunitas for a Baratza Encore.
Speaking of the new Encore, is anyone using it yet?
-
I do like the Krups Conical, but it is up to $149 on Amazon, and to be honest I was more interested in it as an entry level espresso grinder for $99. The build quality is there though, even for $149. That said, I still have my original Maestro so the build quality on my old Baratza machine at least must be good too.
The Encore looks interesting though. The Capresso Infinity is worth mentioning as well.

+1 - those refurb deals are hard to beat.
I use a Capresso Infinity at work. It was my first burr grinder and I got it as a gift years ago. It produces a grind that is OK for aeropres and drip/pourover but inferior to the Baritza. It also retains huge amounts of coffee. I clean it out daily.

+1 on the Baratzas. I have a Maestro that has been used and abused for the last several years (never had to replace any parts) and it has a great grind for Aeropress, pourover and drip. It leaves a little to be desired in the courser grind consistency, but I only go there for cupping purposes which doesn't penalize a slightly variegated particle size. I have seen Maestros on CL for $50 or so semi-regularly so keep your eyes pealed there as well.

+1 on the Baratza.
Love mine!
:)
PS.. the refurbs are almost twice as much as they once were.

My maestro I don't know how many hundreds of pounds of coffee I ran through it, it is still going strong.

Buy her a compak.... or should I say give her your grinder and buy a Compak :)

Oh I've thought about it.

The Encore is my go-to french press, pour over, drip, etc. grinder.
So far it is working fantastically. Consistent grind quality, easily adjustable.
I've even pulled some espresso shots with it. Has worked well so far.

I picked up a Bodum Antigua at the thrift shop yesterday for $7. Works like a champ. We can work out a trade if you have anything I might be interested in.

If you can haggle and trade up from a Bodum Antigua to a San Franciscan 1lb roaster I think you have been in the wrong profession for several decades :) .

I'll trade you for the island of Antigua.

I'm sure a San Fransica roaster would work! ;)

You really never know what you will find at goodwill . . . .

Just trying to keep sensei staylor on good terms w/ Doreen...
A decent grinder at a good price; Capresso Infinity Burr Grinder (http://www.amazon.com/Capresso-560-01-Infinity-Grinder-Black/dp/B0000AR7SY?t=slickdeals&tag=slickdeals).

Does it really need to be motorized?
-
Think I'm going with a Baratza Encore.
-
That one looks like a good choice - I received a Preciso with the new gearbox (version 2.0) but haven't unpacked it yet. my original one is still working fine but this one is supposed to be an improvement. The Encore has this upgraded gearbox too.
