Title: "Sock" Coffee Brewers
Post by: headchange4u on June 28, 2010, 06:50:40 AM
I found that Amazon has the new Yama "sock" brewer for sale (http://www.amazon.com/Northwest-Glass-CD-5-Ounce-Coffee/dp/B002CVTKWE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1277731960&sr=8-1). Pyment mentioned this a while back. I had been wanting to get one of the Hario drip pots but I like the look of the Yama better. I love the way the spout in made.

Anyway, I had to order one. I thought $19.95 was a great price, and its eligible for free Super Saver shipping if you spend another $5. Certainly cheaper than it's Hario counterpart (http://www.amazon.com/Northwest-Glass-CD-5-Ounce-Coffee/dp/B002CVTKWE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1277731960&sr=8-1). I'll report back once I have a chance to use it.

The top almost looks like they've sliced off the top part of a grapefruit.

Are you kidding ... of course I look forward to the review.

You got to admit though ... does it not look like a grapefruit that is sliced across the top?

I saw the Hario version of this (or is the Yama the knockoff of the Hario) on display at the Visions booth at CoffeeFest.  Eric seemed to like them a lot, and recommends rinsing the filter well and then storing it submersed in water in the fridge between uses.

Grapefruit wouldn't have crossed my mind if you hadn't mentioned it. Now that you have?........

Nope, not to me.

Coffee sock. Haha, that reminds me...

I had a roommate from the Dominican Republic once. He would commonly brew his coffee from one of his socks from his sock drawer then toss it in the laundry basket.
He was rewarded with coffee with a hint of fabric softener and many stained socks...  :-X

Yama sock brewer arrived yesterday, 2 days before the scheduled delivery date.

I haven't got to try it out yet, but my initial impressions are that it looks very nice. It's smaller than I had pictured in my head.

I also retitled the thread to "Sock" Coffee Brewers. The box for the Yama unit actually says "Sock Coffee Pot". Hopefully this thread will become the world-wide repository for information regarding getting the most of out of your socks. :P ;D

A colador or sock brewing method is the national coffee brewing method in Costa Rica.

Using the typical Costa Rican sock, you should prepare yourself for heavy updosing to counter the massive underextraction. The issue I always had (with the native sock) is that when you get the grind dialed for an acceptable extraction, the slowdown in brew-through simply causes the brew water to filter through the sock above the coffee bed.

...

Any market you go to in Honduras has coffee brewing.  It is a 5 gallon pot with a huge immersed sock of coffee steeping in it.  Domestic coffee is let's say, not quite up to Cabal standards?

The only thing that comes to mind is maybe shoot a PM to dcmusichound... I think he uses this method a lot.

If it's not him then I've sent you off on a goose chase.  ;D

I forgot to report back on my sock brewer. I've been using the same grind that I use for my Hario pour over brewer as well as the same spiral pouring technique . Overall I like the sock brewer a lot. It produces a more full bodied cup, kinda a cross between a press pot and pour over. I am definitely getting more oils in the cup. As with all cloth filters, cleanup sucks.

I'll try to get some pics of the pot in action. The coffee dripping off the bottom of the sock has a very zen-like quality.

if this is ever going to be more than a fringe brewer, we have to come up with a better name.

What kind of fabric does this cloth pourover use?

What's wrong with Sock Brewer? I kinda like the unstated yet inferred "Dirty" Sock Brewer aspect of the name. Sorta appeals to the 6 year old in me.

I dunno, I would even prefer "grapefruit brewer" (even though it doesn't look like one).

I suppose if I said to someone that "I made this cup in my coffee sock brewer" they just wouldn't give a "darn". I think that idea has a lot of "holes". I don't think you will see as many places "stocking" them unless it's next to the "hosiery".

I think Cloth Drip Pot sounds better than Sock Brewer.:-\ JMHO.

The material is a thick flannel-like cotton. I have the Hario V60 cloth filter (http://www.vittitow.com/images/VGNF-02.gif) and it's thicker than Yama Sock Pot filter. The closest thing I have found is muslin cloth like I used in my DIY cloth pour over filters (http://www.greencoffeebuyingclub.com/index.php?topic=7197.0), but it's paper thin material when compared to the Yama and Hario filters.

I pulled the Yama Sock brewer out of the cabinet this weekend, as it had been a while since it had seen any use. I was pouring the water into the filter, almost at the end of my pour, when I noticed there was coffee all over my counter. My first thought was that the pot was cracked, but on closer inspection I found that coffee was running out of the filter, down the side of the pot, and being ejected from the spout area.  A lot of coffee made its escape before I noticed. Seems that if the filter is turned just right the coffee will exit through the spout. I wanted to sell the brewer until I tasted the cup it had made. Delicious. I guess I will have to be bit more careful when brewing or pick up one of the Hario units.

I had picked up a replacement Yama Sock Pot filter with handle from Orphan Espresso ...

I have a bunch of gym socks that I can't get clean anymore.  I will send them along for your sock set-up.
