best source for small lot purchases: nuts, bolts, o-rings, etc
« on: September 30, 2010, 11:08:48 AM »
There's a family run hardware store here in Pearland that has catered to farmers, ranchers, wildcatters, for decades. They have stuff that you just don't find in Home Depot & Ace. But even they don't have the o-ring I need and it's hard to find the right size in lots smaller than 20!

Who's got a parts source they've used?

Looks like 72.5mm x 3mm or 2 15/16" x 3/32". McMaster-Carr has them, but in packages of 20! I'd like to find a place here in Houston.

Google for a nut and bolt supply, they are usually really cheap and have everything.  Some only deal with business accounts, but find them and call.  Mcmaster Carr is never cheap but they have everything.

For a local store, give Fastenal a try.

Hours: Monday - Friday 7:00am - 5:00pm
Phone: (281)412-2093
Fax: (281)412-2251    1118 N. Main St. Suite 2A
Pearland, TX 77581
Map and directions

Edit:
I just checked and it looks like they have you want but will need to special order it in:
#148: 2-3/4" ID x 2-15/16" OD x 3/32" Dia. Buna-N 70 O-Ring

The cool thing about o-rings is that the sizes are all standardized. You never really have to guess about which one you need. If you have a dial caliper you can just measure and go down to any hydraulic shop and ask for it by number.

Thanks - now I just need somewhere to stash the other 49 I don't need! :o

McMaster-Carr has them in packages of 20; so I'd have less waste!

I typically to find the shop in my area that only sells screw, nuts and bolts. This works well for a few reasons. First they always have the totally random metric sizes for the old european machines I am rebuilding. Also, they always have each size in the absolute highest quality grade available.

I'd be really surprised if they wouldn't sell you just one. I've bought all kinds of small parts from them in counts of one or two.  I've also had good luck finding o-rings at Napa auto parts stores. They usually have a numbered set in a plastic box behind the counter.

I'll check?

I'd forgotten about NAPA, I'll drop by there this evening.

Thanks!
