1/4 bbl slim keg coffee roaster ideas?
« on: January 28, 2013, 10:06:11 AM »
Picked up a 1/4 bbl slim keg at work and have some stainless perforated metal for an 8" dia. 12" long drum.

Ideas?

Take the keg in and exchange it for a full one?  Others would know better what kind of beer the full one should contain, so I defer to the experts.

There was a period in my life when I had access to bandsaws and welders and ...   and probably would've tackled something like you're contemplating.  Now that I see what goes into making a good commercial roaster, am older and less motivated, I'd leave all that to the guys that make them for a living.

My first thought is that you'd cut a section of the keg out lengthwise so it could sit over a manifold w/ some gas jets, mount the roasting drum inside with a shaft on the back and some sort of funnel shaped opening on the front of the drum, so that the beans would stay inside the drum when it's horizontal, but you could tip the whole set up up and off the base w/ the flames to dump the beans.

Then you'd have to devise some sort of blower for exhaust and airflow.

As your ideas come together, you'd have to ask yourself whether or not the whole project has any advantages over a BBQ grill using the drum you're going to make.

Good Idea! Mine was to cut the keg horizontally all the way around BBQ grill style or cut one end off and mount the motor on the other side. The keg advantage; free and stainless. BBQ grill advantage, already complete with burners and stand.

Otherwise the keg could be used for a fermenter, BBQ grill, or smoker.

You work for a maco....please don't tell me you work for a craft brewer or I'll start turning green right now.

Don't worry; AB InBev. Biggest fermenter is 4000 bbls, smallest finished beer tank is 540 bbls.

I would find it interesting to see yeast handling and co2 wrangling at that massive scale but my beer envy is safely in hibernation.

Looking at the keg I wonder if some gigantic Jabez style roaster could work.

I'm thinking if the keg were open on one side; the drum and shaft could slide out. Cutting the keg around the circumference would be easy; but then what?
