Wiring a house for my Gene?
« on: June 05, 2013, 05:50:04 PM »
We are going to be breaking ground on a new house in about a month and a half.  This will be a temporary house for us in which we will stay for about 1 to 2 years before breaking ground on a larger home. At that point it will either be rented out or sold.  I mention this because I do not want to make a bunch of expensive additions for my coffee needs that will just be a worthless in a year or two.  The only things I am going to do to this house to make a coffee specific are, make sure there is a single hung window that I can easily event the Gene out of and get a dedicated electrical line for better voltage control.

What type of dedicated line do I want to run for my Gene Cafe?

I don't know a lot about electricity but I am assuming I want a direct wire from my panel to the outlet with no splices. What about amps? What about watts? Is there a variac that I can have my electrician install in the crawlspace that I don't have to look at? Is a varic necessary with a dedicated line?

A 12 gauge dedicated outlet would be great, and probably not hugely expensive or super unusual at build time.   All you can do is eliminate bottlenecks, if the neighborhood is poorly served (or undergoes large swings in load) you go to the variac.

When I told the electrician what I needed, he set me up with a dedicated 20A line for my Gene.

I saw that on your house post. That's what got me wondering. I was just going to have to run a dedicated line but I was wondering if there were anything else I should add to it or any specific specs I should give him.

If you tell him you want a dedicated 20 amp circuit, he'll know what to do. (One 20 amp breaker switch, one run of 12 gauge wire, one outlet...)
var elvisLives = Math.PI > 4 ? "Yep" : "Nope";

Eletrician was out for kitchen project.  He verified workbench outlet in cellar was on 20A dedicated.  Check.

Had him segregate outlet in 3-season (sic) porch to a new dedicated 20A.

Last week had HVAC put vent near cellar bench area for some winter heat and a cold air return for better humidity control that can be closed off while roasting

Ready to rock and roll.

PS.  Anyone know how to blow out that stock template below from phone?

I was going to post a tiny picture explaining it that would be really really hard to read on the phone, but I had the laugh for thinking about it without actually having to torment you.

There once
was a lad from Nantucket, (challenged to pooch up a couplet)
He said with a grin,  "That bet I can win..."
Like any bad roast I can chuck it!
