backflush detergent destroys chrome
« on: December 17, 2013, 10:35:37 AM »
dummy me thought that backflush detergent was safe on chrome... :-(
I knew not to use citric acid except to descale.

the inside of the group was nasty so I soaked it in a very diluted solution of backflush detergent and this is the outcome.
FWIW, it was Puro Caff.

Dang, thanks for the post! I might have done the same thing! Just for clarity, what should one use in this case?

not sure what is safe for chrome, I've read that simple green also does the same thing.  next time I'll probably slather citrus hand degreaser inside only.

The only thing I can think of is, the chrome had defects in it anyways,  dings from damage, bubbles, cracks etc, and it was able to get in and attack the base metal underneath the chrome which of course caused it to gall off / blister etc.

Even fairly safe sodium carbonate descalers can be VERY active on aluminum / zinc base metals.
