Thanks. Sonofresco gas heat is on/off. I?m assuming Aaron?s Artisan is electric from the wattmeter.

Do you raise heat before tp then back off after yellowing?

actually no I will just turn it on put beans in and let them go,  i mayu back down when they start cracking to slow the crack a bit but other than that slow but steady is typically how i ramp it.

or sometims like  5500 watts to 300 degrees
6500 watts to 375 degrees
7000 to 7500 from 375 to end.  Itypicall take it to 7500 but may back down to 7k if i think its going a bit fast.    This is for a typical 4.5 to 5 lb roast

your heat ramp is opposite of a gas drum ramp.

If I wanted to I could also just set the heat to 8500 watts and let it rip and do 4 to 5 lba at a shot and they will be done.  I like starting in with a lower wattage first so it's not roaring the temp up too quickly at first, and.. well im roasting on solar power so don't want to dump kw if I dont have to.  To be honest ramping gives me better control and better tasting coffee.

But it's still the opposite of a drum, where I start hot and reduce heat during the roast.

That is true Peter but I wonder how big a difference it does make in a CFB considering the air is the heat source, not metal or radiant really, so is pre heat really necessary?  and if you do how much does it change it?

I guess i could try one day on my arty

Pre heat is critical for a drum. Too low a charge temp results in a bad tasting roast. As does too high a charge temp

My charge temp is 190C for now, for all bean types. I know I should adjust according to moisture content and bean density, but haven't researched yet which way to go for those types of beans. Any suggestions?

Trying to attach a photo to this post. This is the three-row burner in my drum roaster. The middle row can be controlled independently of the two outer rows, which is how I control my temps. Everything is manual, which is great for playing around with roast levels. I try to keep my ROR to 7-9C every 30 seconds, but it is very tricky for me to nail that exactly at this time.

Yeah.

Stop posting your temps in Celsius, it hurts my brain to convert to F.   ;)
