Title: Coffee bench/ workstation
Post by: blzrfn on January 20, 2012, 12:47:36 PM
I have seen others post their coffee/espresso shrines and I think my accumulation is quickly outgrowing my small kitchen.  I'm thinking of buying something that is about 4 to 5 feet long by about 2 to 3 feet wide with built in storage underneath.  If you have something similar lets see what you got.  If you have a helpful (please take note of this adjective  ;)) bit of advice I'd love to hear it!

Does it need to be on rollers or stationary?

I have several wire benches/carts on rollers that I bought at Costco (http://www.costco.com/Common/Search.aspx?whse=BC&topnav=&search=cart&N=0&Ntt=cart&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US) & Sam's Club (http://www.samsclub.com/sams/search/searchResults.jsp?searchCategoryId=all&searchTerm=cart&fromHome=yes&_requestid=21036). I also have a bathroom vanity base unit (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?keyword=vanity+bathroom&selectedCatgry=SEARCH+ALL&langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053&Ntpc=1&Ntpr=1) from Home Depot, with a stone top, that I use for my coffee nook.

Here's my set up.  Wife picked up that piece on clearance at a local furniture store.  My only regret is there is no plumbing in that far corner of the kitchen (yet).

I'm thinking more furniture style, but I'm still in the planning stages.  I was thinking a roll top desk would be really cool, but probably too low to be ergonomic to work at and to small to fit all the toys.  I don't just want it to be a shelf that holds stuff, I want it to be where I go to ponder what kind of preparation I am craving and then go ahead and prepare it.

I'm really diggin' that look Bob!  Perhaps something very similar with some kind of shelves coming up from the back for display of the various presses, vacpots, pourovers that I keep buying for some unknown reason.

I went with a furniture look too - Mission style complimented our dining room. I decided that many drawers were preferable to a few shelves.

I'm digging both of those setups, keep the pics coming guys!  I will need to have room for a Mazzer SJ, Grimac MiniGrimac (both in the process of "restoration") Baratza Maestro, Bonavita electric kettle and possibly my Bunn and Pavoni PGC grinder on top.  Everything else can go on shelving or in cabinets/drawers.  I would like for my old German and Japanese hand grinders to be on display at the minimum, but I think the vac pot and Eva Solo would make good conversation starters as well.

Excuse my rambling, I'm just thinking out loud trying to spark some more good suggestions.

Display shelves? I'll be putting a 31" floating glass shelf from Ikea up next week, about a foot above the espresso machine. My bench is just 48" long and is fine for the gear I use the most.

The corner shelves were from Home Depot.

How do you get up there to dust?

That's why you have a cleaning service, isn't it?

Duh.  I should have remembered paradise not only comes with 70 degree days in January, it also comes with a cleaning service.

Goosed.

Even aggressively goosed, that lady couldn't clear a hurdle - she's the spitting image of Dick Butkus in his prime!

The cast if off, but I'm not climbing a ladder to dust any shelves! ::)

Welcome to the club ... I am one of the biggest abusers of the English language.  My wife is constant correct-all around me.

It is a riot!

My wife has always disliked how the coffee paraphernalia clutters up the counters in our kitchen, so, during our recent re-model, we set it up so all the clutter can be hidden behind closed doors (sort of like the roll-top desk idea).

I would be proud of my coffee equipment, not hiding it.  Need to teach her to appreciate the finer things in life more.

Maybe if you had a classic espresso machine, instead of the Classic, she'd be more respectful of your gear?

Have her talk to Mrs. Tex who knows that fine machines make good decorating.

Yeah, sure. She knows the less she bitches about my cheapo collections, the less I'll complain about her excesses! :o

That's nice, is that the one that took the leg out?

No, this is the one that almost did me in!

Tex,

That's a real colorful bong you've got there on the far right.  I didn't know you were into those kind of greens.   ;)

That's a picture of Danny McNulty's Gaggia GX, so the weight for the bong is off my shoulders. Danny lived in GB and had a coffee shop setup in a trailer, and his pride & joy was this 3-group GX. Unfortunately, Danny passed away a few years ago, and the coffee world hasn't been the same since. :(

Before he died Danny, sparked a love for the Gaggia GX lever machines in me, and I've been jonesing for a 2-group model ever since. Someday<wistful sigh>?

That is a nice setup Phil, I need to go stand-alone style though as my kitchen is comfortable (read small).

Tex, that print and plant have got to go.  Blech!   :o

I'd agree with you, but it's not wise to criticize Mrs T's decorative skills. For Christmas, she removed the eagle on top of the machine and replaced it with a snowman! :-X
