Roasting in the cold
« on: January 31, 2011, 07:29:08 PM »
What is a good residential roaster that I can put in my garage and be able to roast in 20 degree temperature during the winter months?  I could carry it in the house when I'm finished so it can be at room temperature.  Will any type of roaster actually do this?  I read somewhere that the Behmor gives an error if you are below 50.  What about the Hot Top?  GeneCafe?  Anything else I missed.

How about the UFO/CO? When it's cold here in Houston (30°F) I put mine in a cardboard box to roast.

I once had a Sono someone loaned me that did a good job of roasting in the cold. But at ~$2500 new, it's a bit pricey for home use.

The behmor works fine in the cold as long as you store it inside.  I have roasted in my garage in Ohio when it is 5 degs outside.  I also have a IR2 that works in the cold.
If this is coffee, please bring me some tea; but if this is tea, please bring me some coffee.

  • Some problems only coffee can fix.

Ditto on using the Behmor in cold weather.  I keep mine in the garage and take it inside for an hour or so before using it on very cold days.  Works fine.

I just use a heat gun to warm the Behmor up before roasting. Not saying its ok to do but 3 winters and its still working fine. The Hottop doesn't seem to care how cold it is. I do fire up the space heater to knock the chill off the garage otherwise roast times are way to long.

I open the door and stick a small hair dryer in the Behmor for a few minutes to bring above 45*.  I have the beans in the drum already so it warms them up a little also.
