Q: Roast logging with Tenma 72-7712 digital thermometer
« on: October 28, 2010, 01:08:17 PM »
I'm just starting to use the Tenma to log roast data.

Q: The 72-7712 will log 99 points of data, right? Assuming a max roast time of 15 minutes; if I set the logging interval to 9 seconds I should capture the entire roast profile, right?

(60/9)*15=100

Actually this will miss the last interval, but at that point I'm getting ready to dump the roast.

This getting older and dumber is getting old, fast! Statistical analysis used to be my meat. >:(

Would it help to think of yourself as merely "Regressing toward the Mean?"  ;) Not that you're mean or any thing...  :P

I googled that meter and the description I saw said it could hold up 100 SETS of data. Maybe you don't need to take such "Gross" measurements.
var elvisLives = Math.PI > 4 ? "Yep" : "Nope";

I think I have mine set to log every 12 seconds. I found that smaller increments still gave me the same basic roast curve and allowed me to monitor longer roasts (although I hardly ever roast beyond 15-16 minutes).

The roast doesn't change that fast, so every 9 - 15 seconds seems reasonable; you wouldn't be losing any valuable data. I had mine set to 5 seconds for 8 minute roasts, but decided that I wanted to try longer roasts - thus the 9 seconds. For now I don't plan on going past 15 minutes with 1 lb batches in the UFO/CO.

edited: I'm looking for a way to wire the Hottop with a beaded type K thermocouple so I can log the roasts from it. It should be interesting to compare the profiles of the HT with the UFO/CO?

I have been thinking of getting a data logging thermometer.

I was wondering if this might be OK.

I've never used that brand/model, but the specs look OK, but I don't see a USB connect for uploading the data? The Tenma 72-7712 that I have costs less, has a USB interface/cable, AND has free data logging software: http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/72-7712&p=?gclid=CKGiws7YgKUCFbBl7AodkVwKPQ

Mix and match the catalog codes on this page when you check out: http://www.mcmelectronics.com/content/en-US/promo/flyer/index

So you could do 15 roasts with one of these, and then take it inside and put them on your computer?

Will they display as curves on the computer, or just as data?

Is the software Mac compatible?
