Coffee for a crowd?
« on: October 23, 2011, 06:29:01 AM »
When we cook BBQ competition we make a big pot of coffee to share with friends.  I have been using a large percolator (I know...) because I can set it up when I wake up and it will brew as I do my morning tasks with the BBQ meat.  Well, my percolator died at our last competition after a mere 40 years! It was my parents and they gave it to me for competitions.

So, I'm looking for suggestions on an easy way to make about two gallons of coffee. So far I can't think of anything but another percolator since I don't have time to mess with making smaller pots and pouring them into a vac pot, etc. I really want plug and play :)

Any thoughts?

I use a Bunn pour over http://www.samsclub.com/sams/search/searchResults.jsp?searchCategoryId=all&searchTerm=vpr&fromHome=yes&_requestid=60853  air pot at the farmers market. Each cycle tales about 5 minutes. At two liters per cycle you would need 20 mins and four vac pots. You can find the air pots as low as $15 on the web.

First thing I thought of.

Thanks...  I'm not sure that I want to spend $300 for coffee that I give away :)  Maybe I can find a refurb or a used one in good shape.  I did fine 128oz. airpots. At least with those I couple get a pot started when i wake and it would last for a while and then I could make a second pot after my morning tasks are done.

I bought one for tailgating years ago and it worked to perfection: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11232429

Ron, you can find a used Bunn on the Chicago Craigslist -- shops come and go.  http://chicago.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=bunn&srchType=A&minAsk=&maxAsk=

Thanks, Dave...  I set up a CL search for Bunn and one for Airpot.  I only have until next spring to figure this out :)
