Two-stage is all that's needed for espresso & coffee machines. The water filtration/softener system from Chris Coffee is a simple design & cheap, and it includes a 10 micron filter. It comes with all the bits & pieces you'll need, with the exception of the fitting to connect to you machine (too many variants).

I found this set up on eBay today I would probably replace the elements.

If it has no holes in the filter holders may be a great deal.
