I'm looking for a coffeemaker for the boat.  Something stainless that makes good coffee.  I have a coffee pot and plastic pour-over, but space is really limited, so I'm thinking something different.

My wife and daughter were in Italy and brought me back this little Mokka brewer-- it's: a) stainless, b) makes good coffee, c) small, and d) different.

Looks similar to something made by GSI Outdoors and sold at outdoors stores for use while camping.

Reviews I've seen seem to be generally positive, but none of them appeared to have had any prior experience with moka pots.  There are of course other types of machines that work on this basic principle.  It would be interesting to have a real showdown between the major players.

  • moka pot
  • this thing (GSI etc.)
  • department store steam-powered "espresso machine", Krups or whatever
  • Atomic, Vesuviana

My theory is that the moka pot will be detectably different, in a way that some people will like, because of the way the hot pot walls burn the coffee a little as it comes out.  Mmmm.
