I don't trim them but I wrap a layer of electrical tape around the metal crimp so that it doesn't
scratch up the grinder.

I think I have bought every size and shape of brush but never found one I liked until several months ago.  It's a plumbers acid brush, $1.13 at Home Depot.   Works better than any I have ever tried.  The bristle is just the right length and seldom/never go to deep in the chute to touch the burrs.

way back when I had a motorized grinder, can brush the top of the burrs as well as the chute
