Likes/dislikes of your auto drip coffee maker
« on: January 27, 2015, 05:52:21 AM »
I have a Bonavita BV1800 that I've been using for about six months.  I brew using 64 grams of coffee with a gold mesh filter.  Sometimes I wonder if another auto drip would do a better job or not.  I thought I'd list my likes and dislikes and see what other people had to say about their makers.

Likes:
Brews coffee at the correct temperature, according to my Thermopen.
Easy to use and easy to clean.
Brews a full 40 oz of coffee in five minutes.
No electronics so nothing to fail in that area.

Dislikes:
The shower head is too close to the grounds.   A lot of time the bloom rises high enough to envelop the shower head which makes a mess on the shower head.
The water doesn't flow evenly through all the water outlets in the shower head. You get a steady stream through the center, but the outer outlets are a hit or miss affair.

I dislike all auto drip machines.

A few min extra work grants you unlimited control via pour over configurations that match your needs.

I use a Black and Decker Brew'n'Go. It is plastic, cheap, but brews a great 1 cup pot of coffee.

My only negative about this is that if I grind too find it stuffs the filter; this is my fault however and now that I am making a conscious effort not to do go to such a fine grind, it is working great!

I love our T-vorm.  I don't have time most mornings to fuss with a PO and neither does Mrs MMW.

You can't beat the ease of making coffee via the T-vorm. When I feel like rolling the dice, then I take extra time to make a vac pot.
Life is too short to drink bad wine (or bad coffee!)

I do well with my T vorn however we also have a commercial bunn that I put a new temp control on to get the temp I want on it.  I also tapped the transformer feeding that circuit a little on the hot side so it has plenty of voltage to keep the temp up too.   Overall though I think I like the T vorn a little better but when we got a gang of folks over the Bunn  with a few hot plates works very nicely.

What they said on the Tvorm. Had them for many years, consistently a great cup and you can make a big production out of it or let it do its own thing. Quality does hold up over time.

I got one of those mesh filters for my T vorn as well.  I really hated using the paper as I feel paper robs you of a lot of the nauances of a coffee's flavor by sucking out oils etc.  It works very well, get a very full bodied cup of coffee and just smack the filter on t he side of the garbage can then rinse in the sink and it's good to go for the next pot.  Once a week or so Ill wash it very thoroughly and possibly US clean it to get it deep cleaned.
