preheat thermal carafe?????
« on: February 06, 2015, 09:11:42 AM »
Kids got me a Melitta thermal pot pourover.  So I was wondering if I needed to preheat the thermal pot prior to doing the pourover.  Just wondering if it affects taste or just another geeky thing to do?

If you do don't neglect to empty the carafe before you hit brew...

I don't preheat my T-vorm.

I think it depends on how quickly you'll drink the coffee.  Some reviews I read indicated the carafe didn't keep the coffee hot for very long.  You're a smart guy so I'm pretty sure you'll figure it.   ;D

That's only if he remembers to preheat his brain.   ;D   Remember, he's almost as old as you BaconFat.

Nucer ... as long as the temperature of the water is between 195 and 205 that is what is important for brewing.

The temperature the water goes to afterwards is a non issue as far as the brew goes. You'll burn your mouth if it's any warmer than about 170 degrees. That will not be a pleasant cup of coffee.

IMHO ... there is no point in warming the carafe, in fact it will get to a drinking temperature sooner if you don't.

My 2¢.

Between that and being from Tejas that should make Nucer a pretty clever guy.

Uh, maybe not.    ;)

If you want to use water that's just off the boil for your for pour over, you must pre-heat you're pouring container...otherwise the water is too cool to extract the goodies.

ah now we digress.  I meant the pot the coffee is going into.  Of course you have to preheat the pouring pot. DUH!  So I will continue to do both depending on the mood.  Ah the quest for an easy answer.

Nucer, can you post some details about the Melitta, where they bought it, and how much, maybe you have a link to where they're available?

MP you got it right.  I use a gold filter on it and the cup it produces so far have been great.  It is one of the gift the kids gave me that I really enjoy.  I suspect the it came from Amazon.  That is all I know.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it Nucer!

Yeah ... I love those permanent filters. I don't much like the chemicals in the paper filters.
