Title: Roasted Coffee Tin With Valve
Post by: thejavaman on April 29, 2008, 10:58:21 AM
SM's added a new "roasted coffee tin" with a degassing valve to their site today: .  I really don't see the advantage of these over valve bags though (besides reusability).  I may have to buy some, just to test them out....

I love that...

Open your can
Get coffee
Close can
grind some coffee
brew coffee

You can do this over and over again...

I like the tins that aren't roasted.

Not only that, the diaphragm is made of paper AND it's on the bottom.  Wouldn't coffee oils seep into it and render it ineffective in short order?

That being said - I really like it! :)  Just seems like there could be a few items changed to make it even better.

I love the idea.  It is strange that the valve is on the bottom.  I'd be willing to give it a shot though.

I think C02 is heavier than air, right?  How would O2 get pushed out the bottom.  Clearly, this business major is lost but it doesn't hurt to learn...

Edit:  Whoops, missed Curly's point above with same question.  BJ

You didn't see the tipsheet that says to turn it upside down between uses?   ;)

Looks like a design boner to me.  The oil will, indeed, plug it up over time.   But I would anticipate that the CO2 and O2 would be fairly well mixed on such a small scale, due to entropy and diffusive forces.

Now I get it.  This is a California product.  It is best used upside down.

Sounds like the problem is solved.  Good thing it has a flat lid!

I love how they limit you to 4, even though "...you should be able to clean off any residual coffee oils with a dry towel and reuse the tin quite a few times.".

Reuse a tin a few times?

What if I want to buy 8 or 10 in case they start to wear out?  Guarantee you their state-of-art shopping cart will let me buy all 10 of them, followed by a phone call saying, "We shipped 4, only charged you for 4, but still charged you tax and full shipping.  Enjoy your 4 measly tins!".

Total joke.

Can't stand their site, their shopping cart, their commentary, and their purchase limits.

You mean that I'm not the only one having had that experience?   ???

The one that always p!$$ed me off was when I would get some choice score on the sale page, decide to add a few pounds of coffee (that wouldn't be cost-effective to order otherwise), then I get the above aforementioned phone call telling me that I have basically paid $12 a pound for a couple of pounds of coffee because the sale item was already sold.

How can you say that when they have a Terminator for Governor?  Here he was in earlier days on the Malibu Beach with a couple of surfers:

Why would I want to go to Nebraska? I have a hard time convincing myself that a trip back to visit friends in AZ would be fun. I just wait for them to visit me, everyone loves San Diego, especially if they are from Arizona. Now A neutral site in say Hawaii might be a good idea.

It's hard to argue with that.  CA makes some pretty good gourmet chocolate too:

P.S. - I'm glad I'm past 666 posts too!  ;D

I knew you would SDKids would back away from a challenge.  Neutral site:  Hawaii.   You have property there...hardly qualifies as neutral.  Besides, it is too close to the left coast.

Ok How about Panama then we can meet up with Monito and Hanan, and go camping! visit farms, I can Surf!, etc...I'm always open for an Indo trip as well, they have a few really good left breaks I would like to try out. I refuse to pay money to go somewhere that I can't get my gills wet.

Panama it is, though I am not about to camp anywhere.  That is why God made houses, hotels, motels, mattresses, etc.

Name the summer and year.

I prefer Fall/Winter that way it wont be unbearably humid and Hot. I am thinking we should wait for afew more stimulus checks(the 4 kids situation I have works well for this) to arrive possibly late this year or next. Of course if the Wife nix's my best laid plans everyone might be required to meet me at Kauai :P I need a few more house sales this year to make it work.

I've never understood why a degassing valve would be thought necessary for storing coffee at home.

Maybe these tins are for use as giving coffee as a gift and that's why the valve is at the bottom--for aesthetic appeal.

I still think the unroasted tines are better.

I've never understood why a degassing valve would be thought necessary for storing coffee at home.

Neither have I. I use simple ziplocks to store my roasts, and I re-use them all the time. I go through a roast in a week, so I figure I do pretty well with the "low tech" method of pouring the fresh roast in the bag, squeezing as much air out as possible, letting it degas and expand the bag, and then pressing out as much of the air as possible every time I open and re-close it over the following week. Anyway, I've never had a freshness problem doing it this way.

So I assume, like you, that we are talking about gift enclosures here.

I've used ziplocks, but I'd prefer to keep mine in a canister.  I just like the organization of it.  It seems a canister with a valve would be better than one without one, right?

I think the degassing valves are good for use on bags that are to be sold. Then they won't puff up because of the coffee degassing. If the bags are stuffed into a box and mailed, it's possible they could burst without the valve. As far as I know.

I keep my coffee in jars because I have a collection and like the different jar shapes and lid colors. It's easier for me to tell which is which because I use certain jars for certain types of beans. I should take a picture of the collection sometime.
