Huky 500 roasting tips, tricks, and questions
« on: January 01, 2015, 01:29:26 PM »
With the first group buy in and the second group forming up I figured it was time for this thread.

I'd really like to see a few of you that have been roasting on the Huky for a while share any learning  curve time saving tips if you have some. ..

But my first question is on Artisan. Do you use it?  What do I need to set it up?  How are you liking /not liking it,  and any general  info on it.  I've never used any data logging so far but now might be the time.

Also,  this looks like the best video to give a brief overview of the Huky.

Around 7min he talks about controlling airflow.  I'd also be very interested in what you are found for this if you are already on team Huky.

Artisan...definitely use it...It's a phenomenal tool for the roaster...I am lost when I try to roast without it...Artisan provides you with a whole lot of data that helps you adjust and tweak your roasts mid-roast....it also helps you with consistency roast to roast and provides visuals to show you what's going on inside the roaster.

Summary: USE ARTISAN  ;D

You will need a device that joins artisan to your thermocouples... I use the amprobe... Others use phidget

Amprobe what, multimeter?

I've got a fairly extensive Fieldpiece meter that might work.

Amprobe TMD-56 Multi-Logging Digital Thermometer, 0.05% Basic Accuracy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005GFHZLG/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_lPJPub0QTYF4V

It has to be compatible with Artisan

Thanks!

I'll research Amprobe vs Phidget and get Artisan running asap. But I don't mind doing some non logging roasts at all.  I probably prefer it to get into what the roaster is about once it gets here.

Will the "center 304 four input thermometer" communicate with Artisan?

It looks like I ordered one of those.

I found this very detailed list of Artisan  supported devices.

You can also use a Honeywell 2020  or fluke 744 series to do about the same thing.
If you really want to get insane, get a slc 500 or siemens, learn ladder logic and use the PLC to control everything for you.

The center 304  an measure 4 data points at once. I think the Huky will have 3 probes. Running 3 Temps into Artisan software is way way more data than I'm used to already. I think trying to automate like you are talking would probably fry my brain.

FWIW, I very happily use the Roastmaster Aoo with Bluetherm Duo and my ipad.  I was motivated to go with this combination because I already had an ipad and did not have a laptop.  With this combination you are limited to 2 inputs, but I find that completely adequate.  With the perforated drum, I monitor the ET and the BT with probes installed by Mr. Li.
