Tatung Hot Water Dispenser
« on: January 09, 2009, 07:51:37 AM »
Found this on Newegg.com.  Maybe not the same as some higher-end units, but looks like a good value.

Well, neither.  My electric tea kettle is still performing well.  But if I needed a new electric kettle, I would go with something like this.  Fill up the reservoir in the morning and you're good all day.  My only hesitation with this one is that I can't find what the 'keep-warm' temp is, but I'd think you could hit the 'boil' button anytime if 'keep-warm' isn't 195 deg.

I posted it hoping someone else would benefit by it.

It looks like the temp is not adjustable - I wonder what it's set for? It's cheap, but is it going to be useful for anything but general hot water use? I use mine to make coffee in the Aeropress, shooting for 198?F.

I use this one from Costco: http://tinyurl.com/9dfob8, because it has three temp settings - plus with Costco's liberal return policy I pretty sure it's the last one I'll ever buy.

Sometimes cheap is cheap, but really cheap is a relative thing.

Yeah ... that 195 degree setting is great for us coffee nuts.

May be worth the asking almost 3 times the price.

If the 195 deg really is the bottom end of the brewing temp you want for the water, it would make sense to have the water somewhat hotter than that to offset the heat loss as the grounds and brewing vessel absorb heat.

That was my thinking with this cheap water dispenser, to have it storing hot water and then when it's needed to make coffee, simply bring it back to boiling.

Good point ... chalk one up for Pete.  At almost 1/3 the price ... great deal.

I appreciate the nomination but the espresso machine takes care of 80% of my coffee needs.

Tatung sounds like a sound effect. Like when you throw a rock in a big metal barrel. I always liked that name.

Hmm ... I guess the club could throw that up in the R & D department.  Now question is how to fund it!

I'm sure the toys would be in great hands with you JJ.  They will brake (I mean work well) in no time.
