I was going to recommend Indoor Health's one ... I had no idea they weren't there anymore. Now I wish I'd bought extras.  :(

You're looking for one with a high enough top end to use for coffee roasting, I assume?

As a sidenote, I started buying from dealextreme last summer.  At first I was reluctant, seeing they're in Hong Kong, so I started with something really cheap.  I've had four transactions so far, all good.

Can't find the exact model that I have online, but I'd get a digital multimeter with a J- or K-type (K is better) thermocouple, preferably with an RS232 port or other output for connection to a laptop or datalogging.  You can usually get one for about $20 on ebay.

This one doesn't have data output (other than the screen), but I have one made by them and it is quite durable and versatile: http://cgi.ebay.com/Eclipse-Multimeter-Test-Lead-Set-Thermocouple-NIB_W0QQitemZ330278661798QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

Ah, for roasting....duh....I missed that part of the request, and my roasting thermometer doesn't have a probe.  It's this one from SM, which has a tip just like the one you described on yours.

However, for future reference, and for anyone interested, that TruTemp one is very handy.  I used it to test the internal temp of bread;  I used it last month to ascertain that my fridge didn't need to be replaced; I drop the probe in the kettle to see when the temp gets down to brew temp.   I couldn't manage without it.
